At first, they thought it was a simulation. Suddenly, everyone started to smell smoke and then they felt frightened. When they realized what was happening, it was too late and they couldn’t leave the school. They were stuck in the classrooms! The people had to go out through the windows, so they had to jump with the help of the firefighters. Fortunately, everybody was safe out of the building, although there were some serious injured. The action of the firefighters to rescue all the people was excellent. The cause of the fire was a cigarette that fell down on a mountain of paperwork. Finally, everything had a happy end and now we expect to have a new school in three or four years. Teacher Paco. THE BRITISH SCHOOL JOURNAL CULTURE HOLY WEEK by Carmen Montoto (Sanlúcar la Mayor) [Teacher: Carmen Vera] Holy week is a special week of the year. Millions of people go out to see the brotherhoods and processions. This week celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is an important tradition in Andalusia, especially in Seville. There are two types of people in Easter: those who see the brotherhoods and the penitents. The penitents are people who walk on the streets with their brotherhoods. Sometimes up to two thousand members of a brotherhood take part, some carry candles, rods or banners depending on their level of seniority. The most senior is the president who carries a golden rod. The “costaleros” carry the weight of the floats and their sculptured representations of the biblical scene. The thrones are followed by “nazarenos” dressed in tunics, hoods and masks and women dressed in traditional costume. Apart from the penitents there are overseers; the counter – guide, the section deputies and the police who ensure that the float is carried with maximum seriousness, grace and tradition. Many tourists come on vacation that week to see this magnificent cultural and religious tradition. A special week of the year. THE BRITISH SCHOOL JOURNAL TECNOLOGY by Rocío Pérez What´s a selfie? (Aznalcazar) [Teacher: María Ferrand] Nowadays there`re a lot of things which we can choose to do and enjoy in our free time. However, we´re always using our smartphone. In fact, this device has changed our life. As a result of this, teenegares prefer talking by whatsapp and taking selfies in Instagram. They say that this way of communication is the fastest and the cheapest to connect the world. Nevertheless, the question is: what´s a selfie? It`s a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held camera phone. But a selfie is more than that. Taking sefies is the most important trendy hobby for teenagers and adults. This action is becoming popular all around the world. Actually, we could see a group of famous actors doing it in the Oscar Ceremony. Even the president of the United States, Obama, takes selfies and other important people as the Pope. Nobody can get away of it, who has not made a selfie yet? So, we can bring up another subject: are our habits changing with the new technology? We could see in the last film, “Catching Fire”, that the games ended, the protagonist Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and her “team” went to District 13 to prepare a revolution against the Capital and its president Snow (Donald Sutherland), but the other main character, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), was kidnapped by them. The last films were amazing and exciting for a lot of people, and the expectations for this film are also very high. In this film, Katniss is going to be the Mockingjay, the symbol of the rebel movement led by President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the Capitol’s ex-Gamemaster Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Peeta is going to be a pawn of the Capital to stop the rebel movement, and the only thing that Katniss wants is to save him and the other tributes from President Snow. My general opinion of the film is good. First, I have to say that the special effects are amazing, and the actors are terrific, too. (Aznalcazar) [Teacher: María Ferrand] This is an interesting and intriguing love story told from the point of view of the two main characters , Otto and Ana. Otto is an eight year-old boy that falls in love with Ana the day that she knows that her father has died. Ana believes that Otto is a gift sent by her father from the heaven. Their parents fall in love because of a paper airplane that Otto threw and Ana found. Then Otto and Ana became stepbrothers. When they are children Otto falls in love with Ana. When they are teenagers they become secret lovers. As adults, they are separated for many years and one day their lives are reunited in Finland in the Artic Circle. I think that everyone will enjoy this unusual story because it’s a wonderful romantic story that proves that true love lasts forever and makes us think that our lives can change at any time, so, Otto and Ana are seen we should enjoy every moat three periods of their lives. ment even if it is painful. (Castilleja de la Cuesta) [Teacher: Lincoln Brody] Good evening, world. I can’t say my name, but I can tell you that I’m one of the students of the English “teacher” Lincoln. Everything started when I went to class for the first time. I noticed that he was looking at us and at the same time he was writing strange things we couldn’t understand in his notebook. So strange… A normal teacher doesn’t usually do that. Then, I continued coming to class twice a week, and he still did this. Also, when we came to class he knew some of our names, even though we never told him! The time I noticed this very well was when Anda came to class the first time. He had known her before, I’m sure… What I’ve written is just a little part of all the documents I have which lead me to believe that Lincoln is an American spy, but I can’t reveal everything. They could discover me, and I don’t know what terrible things they would do. So next week I’ll see you again, and remember: watch your back! Letters to the editor Dear Gines Town Hall, Dear Gines Town Hall You always tell us that we must recycle, but we cannot do it, because there are not many glass containers, and we cannot throw away the rubbish in them. So, I propose that if you put more glass containers in this town, we will recycle the rubbish and it will be better for the environment. I think and I hope that you can install them, and it will be good for the town of Gines. I am worried, because in my street, when it is rainy, the sewers get blocked because they are dirty with plants and rubbish. I do not know if many people have had similar experiences, but I would like to solve this problem. Could you send someone to clean the sewers, please? Thank you very much. Yours sincerely, Alejandra Barbasán Carmona Best regards, Carmen Barbasán Carmona. THE BRITISH SCHOOL JOURNAL OPINION BULLFIGHTING: RESPECT OR DESTROY by Olivia Millán Silvia (Sanlúcar la Mayor) [Teacher: Johnny Waudby] WHAT IS “BULLFIGHTING”? Bullfighting is a national show in Spain. Bullfighting takes place in a large outdoor arena known as the “plaza de toros”. The goal is for one of the bullfighters (toreros)—the matador—to kill a wild bull, or “toro”, with a sword. Bullfighting is certainly one of the bestknown-shows at the same time is the most controversial Spanish popular customs. This “Fiesta” could not exist without the “toro bravo”, a species of bull of an ancient race that is only conserved in Spain. DIFFERENTS POINTS OF VIEW Bullfighting is not a sport, it’s an art with an aesthetic content, and it contains a system of beliefs and has a particular language. These expressions serve and are used by the Spanish in everyday life. For example, flamenco songs often mention bullfighting. Bullfighting is a mix between wild life and culture. You can feel the art but you can see the bull is dying. It’s very strong and there are a lot of opposite feelings. ANTIBULLFIGHTING Bullfighting takes place in only nine countries around the world. A considerable number of countries have banned bullfighting, e.g. Argentina, Canada, Cuba, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. There are even certain regions within the bullfighting countries that have abolished it; e.g. The Canary Islands in Spain, and most of France. While some artists and writers have defended bullfighting, many others have opposed it. There are also a significant number of politicians from across the political spectrum that have opposed bullfighting. The establishment “For a Bullfighting-free Europe” says: - Even if you believe that bullfighting is tradition or culture, this can never justify cruelty to animals: cruelty is cruelty no matter where in the world it happens. Cruelty against animals has no place in a modern society. SPAIN’S POSITION In Spain, most of the people, over a 63% of the population don’t want Bullfighting: many people think it is about time that the government listens to its citizens and ends bullfighting for good in Spain. But there is a small and powerful group of influential people behind the bullfighting industry that are keeping it alive. Is bullfighting so scandalous? Are we dramatizing it? For bullfight fans, blood and gore are elements of an art form that fuses grace and courage. The bull’s death (they say) is the “moment of truth” in the killing ritual that has its roots in the Minoan civilization of Crete. All Europe think: Spaniards are like beasts but, bullfighting is part of our culture. We’re just killing bulls, it’s not so bad. For example: Do people know what is the USA army doing in the Arab States? If you hate your culture simply don’t support it.
