Internship Program Objectives As we have read so far, NCK’s motivation as a company is tightly linked to the intention of promoting the development and welfare of society. As time has advanced, many ideas have been succesfully implemented in order to accomplish this goal within Japanese society, and this positive experiences have encouraged the company to expand its field of action to countries in need on the other side of the ocean. Colombia was chosen to be the target of this help because despite of its adverse social and economic situation, they identified a huge potential existing overshadowed by our negative social behaviour. It is easy for Japan to relate Colombia with its own experience after World War II, when the country faced the worst crisis in its history and managed to become the third largest economy in the planet in just 23 years. Crisis leaded Japan to understand that people are the most important asset of a country, and that everything can be accomplished with patience, cooperation and avoiding particular interests. This is what they want Colombia to understand, NCK wants to help Colombian society to change its paradigm, to take Japanese history, achievements and mistakes as an example to surpass its own problematics. Colombia is indeed in a much better situation than post World War II Japan, but people’s current way of thinking is leading to war, poverty and inequality. The difficult question is “how do we change paradigms?”. NCK bets for two answers. First of them is to reach young people. Most part of the adult people have been exposed to the original paradigm too much time and have adjusted to its standards, making it practically impossible to talk them out of it. Nevertheless, as cold as it may sound at first, adult population is not going to live for ever, and reaching young people successfully would then imply to be only a matter of time for the paradigm to be replaced. It is worth mentioning again that patience is one of the requirements for success. The second answer is to use the educational power and influence held by companies. NCK considers a company also as an educational entity, where the owners have the responsibility to train their employees besides technical expertise, in the field of manners to help them become remarkable citizen. Based on this idea, we can assume that with the appropriate number of companies promoting a new paradigm among its employees we could cause a noticeable impact in the way of thinking of the society. NCK’s internship program is based on these two answers. The idea consists on selecting young people from Colombian universities, eager to help their society and interested on learning about Japanese culture and giving them the opportunity to spend 6 months living at Japan and being part of NCK family. It must be stated that this is not a technical internship. Technical knowledge can be found everywhere, but the idea of bringing the intern to Japan, is giving him or her the opportunity of understanding Japanese paradigm directly from its source. The intern is expected to explore every aspect of its culture in order to develop a notion of the process that guided Japan to be the country that it is today. This process includes many different and rich areas such as history, religion, art, politics, customs, language and others. Which means for the intern to have a strong disposition to learn and to be open for new experiences. Also, the intern has the opportunity of being part of NCK company. Eventhough no work responsibility is given to him or her, the daily experience of being a fellow employee, interacting with coworkers, sharing experiences and observing their behaviour is enough to develop a reliable concept about the Japanese professional paradigm. Creating a Japanese company in Colombian territory would not be a smart choice and it is not the internship program’s objective. Colombia has a totally different economic scenario where a Japanese company will most likely not succeed. The idea is to create a whole new concept of company using the strongest points from both paradigms in order to innovate and making into the market. This way, it is possible to intervene both fields of action, as NCK is training young people and creating responsible educational companies at the same time. The only thing remaining to generate a noticeable change in the Colombian society is time: Time for companies to grow and for the number of interns to increase so they can support each other and become a real source of change and innovative thinking.
