Expressing possibilities
Hello again! Esta semana repasaremos el uso de adjetivos descriptivos; seguiremos
utilizando el futuro, esta vez para expresar posibilidades en modo condicional. Al finalizar la semana, podrás describir lugares o actividades; enunciar posibilidades en
modo condicional y presentar soluciones en futuro.
¿Recuerdas los adjetivos vistos en semestres anteriores? Cuando estudiaste
Comparisons en la semana 3 del 3ero, notaste que algunos adjetivos se pueden utilizar para describir tanto personas como lugares u otras situaciones. Ahora, seguiremos
utilizando esos adjetivos descriptivos y algunos nuevos. Llena la tabla 12 con los que
ya conoces; después, añadirás los que encuentres en el diálogo de la siguiente sección.

Si este año sales de paseo con tu familia, ¿a donde irás? Si viajas a alguna ciudad
importante, ¿visitarás museos o parques? Si este año no tienes mucho trabajo, ¿disfrutarás más de tu tiempo libre?
Lee el siguiente diálogo y observa las oraciones que están en negritas:
Chris: Caribay, it´s amazing that we are going on our first trip to a campsite in the mountains!
Caribay: yes, interesting…but, don´t you think it will be boring?
Chris: boring? Not at all. It will be very relaxing.
Caribay: relaxing…I´m starting to be under stress. I´m worried about being late at the bus station. What if we miss the bus?

Chris: don´t worry. If we miss the bus, we´ll take a “shared ride cab”.

Caribay: and what about the place where we´ll stay? What if we don´t find a campsite at the mountains?
Chris: don´t worry, Caribay. If we don´t find a campsite there, we´ll camp on a beautiful beach. The next day we will explore the colorful coral reefs.
Caribay: the beach? What if there are a lot of insects?
Chris: don´t worry, Caribay. If there are insects, we´ll use a spray.
Caribay: what if it rains while we are camping?
Chris: don´t worry, Caribay. If it rains, we won´t stay there. We can go to the city and visit parks,castles, churches, malls, and shops.
Caribay: camping is also dangerous and unsafe. What if someone steals our clothes?
Chris: don´t worry, Caribay. If someone steals our clothes, we´ll wear our towels.
Caribay: what if things are very expensive there, and we cannot buy any clothes?
Chris: If things are expensive, we´ll get a job in a restaurant and we´ll have enough money to spend. Don´t worry!
Caribay: oh, I´m worried about the language. What if nobody speaks English there?
Chris: don´t worry, Caribay. If nobody speaks English, we´ll use our dictionary!
Caribay: well, it is better to believe that things will turn all right at the end…

Shared ride taxi viene a ser el equivalente al carrito por puesto, que es tan común en muchas ciudades de Venezuela. Cada persona que ocupe un
lugar en el carro, debe pagar un mismo precio; y
estos carros tienen una ruta de viaje establecida.
Expressing possibilities
Observa en el diálogo las oraciones que están en negritas:
What if we miss the bus? (Qué tal si perdemos el bus?)
If we miss the bus, we´ll take a shared ride cab. (Si perdemos el bus, tomaremos
un carro por puesto).
Cuando queremos plantear la posibilidad de que una condición futura pueda ocurrir, hacemos preguntas como: ¿qué tal si perdemos el avión?, ¿Y si no viene el doctor?
Fíjate en el diálogo y extrae tres de las preguntas que plantean allí:

Ahora escribe la estructura de la pregunta.
Observa las respuestas que da Chris a las preguntas de Caribay. Fíjate que estas oraciones están compuestas por dos ideas separadas por una coma:
If we miss the bus
, we´ll travel by airplane or by train.
Observa la partícula con la que comienza la primera idea e identifica en qué tiempo
está el verbo.
Fíjate en la segunda idea; ¿en qué tiempo está?
Veámoslo a manera de tabla, para que puedas visualizar mejor la estructura:

Como puedes ver, esta estructura está expresando una condición y luego un resultado de esa condición. Este tiempo se llama First Conditional (Primer Condicional).

- Usamos el primer condicional para expresar eventos futuros posibles:
If you lend me some money, I’ll pay you back tomorrow.
Si me prestas algo de dinero, te pagaré mañana.
- La cláusula con If siempre va en tiempo presente; pero puede presentar diferentes formas de presente que ya has estudiado, como el presente contínuo y
también el presente perfecto:
If I go to Valencia, I’ll buy you a souvenir.
Si voy a Valencia, te compraré un recuerdo.
If he’s feeling better, he’ll come.
Si él se está sintiendo mejor, vendrá
If she hasn’t heard the bad news yet, I’ll tell her.
Si ella no ha escuchado aún las malas noticias, yo se las diré.
- La cláusula que va en futuro puede presentar cualquiera de las dos formas en
futuro que ya conoces: will o going to:
If I see him, I’m going to tell him the truth.
Si lo veo, le voy a decir la verdad.
If we don’t get that contract, we’ll find another one.
Si no ganamos ese contrato, conseguiremos otro.
Algunas veces te encontrarás con que la cláusula
en futuro lleva verbos modales como can, que viste
en la semana 13 del 1er semestre. Ejemplo: If you
are good today, you can wath TV tonight (Si eres
bueno hoy, podrás ver TV en la noche).

¿Practicas algún deporte?, ¿sueles salir de paseo con tu familia o amigos?, ¿acostumbras visitar museos o asistir a actos musicales o al cine? Lee en tu CD información acerca de las actividades de las que puedes disfrutar en la ciudad de
Maracaibo. Revisa las opciones sobre “excursions” y “leisure”.
1. Susana y Carlos saldrán un fin de semana para la playa. Carlos tiene ciertas
preocupaciones acerca de los posibles inconvenientes. Escribe las preguntas de

Carlos utilizando las palabras en el cuadro. Usa las estructuras para expresar posibilidades: what if …?

2. Susana quiere calmar a Carlos. Escribe las respuestas de Susana a las preguntas
de Carlos en el ejercicio anterior. Usa: we will… y las palabras que correspondan
en el cuadro siguiente.

3. What will happen if…?
Completa las oraciones usando la forma correcta de los verbos entre paréntesis.
Fíjate en el ejemplo:

4. Ve a tu CD y busca el juego titulado: What if…? Sigue las instrucciones para imprimir las hojas, cortar las tarjetas y comenzar a jugar.

The Kinetoscope was a motion picture projector invented in 1888.
The concept of moving images as entertainment was not a new one by the latter
part of the 19th century. Magic lanterns and other devices have been employed in
popular entertainment for generations. Magic lanterns used glass slides with images
which were projected. The invention of a camera in the Edison laboratories capable
of recording successive images in a single camera was a more practical, cost-effective machine that influenced all subsequent motion picture devices. Thomas Edison
thought: “What if we design a motion picture camera?”
Edison described his idea like this: “if this device does for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear, it will reproduce objects in motion”. Edison called the invention a Kinetoscope, using the Greek words “kineto” meaning “movement”, and “scopos”
meaning “to watch”. A prototype for the Kinetoscope was finally shown on May 20,
1891. The device was both a camera and a peep-hole viewer, and the film used was
18mm wide. The film ran horizontally between two spools, at a continuous speed. A
rapidly moving shutter gave intermittent exposures when the apparatus was used
as a camera, and the spectator looked through the aperture that housed the camera
lens.

2. Escribe lo que dijo Edison mientras inventaba la cámara de cine, uniendo las siguientes frases. Usa la estructura: If (condición) verbo en presente + (resultado)
en futuro.

3. Escribe un diálogo con las expresiones de posibilidades futuras usando las estructuras aprendidas. Escribe acerca de lugares que conoces o actividades que
te gustan y sugiere visitar esos sitios o realizar una u otra actividad.
4. No olvides escribir en tu journal las experiencias e ideas que tengas con respecto a tu aprendizaje.
