Vocabulary
Vocabulary refers to knowing the names of things, such as objects, actions or
ideas. Nouns are the easiest vocabulary words to learn and provide children with
the tools to communicate their thoughts and feelings.
Ingredients
1 Involved Parent
1 Interested Child
1 Great Book
Directions
Speak as though the child understands everything you say. Point out and name
everything in the child’s world. Repeat and explain unfamiliar words or concepts.
Introduce synonyms. Books which use lots of synonyms, like The Napping House
by Don and Audrey Wood, are great language builders.
Talk about pictures in the book.
Research shows that it is best for you to speak to your child in the language you know best.
As you read, you may notice some words that are new to your child. Take some time to explain new words
and try to use them again within a day or two.
