The Basilica of La Macarena is dedicated to the
Virgin of Hope or La Macarena, a universally
worshipped effigy which has devotees all over the
world. The brotherhood had its origins in the late
16th century, with the temple where it is currently
located being blessed in 1949, after being housed
in various churches over its more than 400 years
of existence. Also worshipped in the temple are
the effigies of the Lord of the Sentence and the
Virgin of the Holy Rosary.
En la Basílica de la Macarena se rinde culto a la
Virgen de la Esperanza Macarena, imagen de
devoción universal que cuenta con devotos en todos
los rincones del mundo. Tuvo origen su Hermandad
a finales del siglo XVI, siendo bendecido el templo
en el que actualmente radica en el año 1949, tras
haber pasado por distintas sedes a lo largo de los
más de cuatrocientos años de existencia. También
se veneran en este templo las imágenes del Señor
de la Sentencia y la Virgen del Santo Rosario.
Its five extensive halls spread over three floors give
an overview of the history of the Brotherhood, and
even Holy Week itself; its connection with the district,
the city and all the places where devotion to La
Macarena has reached; the activities carried out by
the corporation in the present day; and the origin
of the devotion to its effigies. The visit ends with a
chance to contemplate the procession floats,
mantles, tunics, skirts, crowns and other features
of the famous procession in the early hours of Good
Friday.
A lo largo de cinco amplias salas, repartidas en tres
plantas, se ofrece un recorrido sentimental por la
historia de la Hermandad, e incluso de la propia
Semana Santa; su conexión con el barrio, la ciudad
y todos los lugares hasta donde ha llegado la
devoción a la Macarena; la actividad que desarrolla
la corporación en la actualidad; o el arraigo popular
de la devoción a las imágenes titulares. Finaliza la
visita con la contemplación de los pasos, mantos,
túnicas, sayas, coronas y todos los elementos que
conforman la conocida procesión en la Madrugada
del Viernes Santo.
