Eating is such a fundamental aspect of our existence, that I find it strange that anyone
should question the wisdom of proposing that FAO should do all in its power to
ensure that everyone can eat three meals a day, says Brazilian José Graziano da Silva.

Providing LAC special coverage of the 17th United Nations Framework Conference
on Climate Change (COP 17) to be held in Durban, South Africa, in December 2011.
Organizing a one-day international conference on communications and sustainable
development in Bogotá, Colombia.
With the aim of achieving better results, and in consultation with LCREA, we decided
to concentrate our efforts on the news coverage of the COP 17 in Durban: providing
more pre-Conference analyses and reports from different regions of Latin America;
sending a specialized journalist for on-the-ground coverage and reporting during the
conference; creating a special page on the Tierramerica website featuring images from
the COP ( http://www.tierramerica.info/cop17.php); distributing promotional
newsletters; and producing radio programs.
Moreover, using the knowledge and the contacts acquired in Durban, in JanuaryMarch 2012 we will be producing a series of six special From Durban to Rio+20
reports and we will publish two op-ed pieces by World Bank officials or experts,
linking the two events and preparing for the June 2012 global meeting.

Agreement for New Global Treaty to Reduce Emissions
By Stephen Leahy
The biggest breakthrough at the climate talks in Durban was getting all of the world’s
governments to agree to negotiate a new global treaty to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions by 2015.
DURBAN, South Africa, Dec. 11 (Tierramérica).- The world is increasingly
committed to dangerous levels of global warming with yet another failure by nations
of the world to agree to needed reductions in carbon emissions here in Durban.
However, as the 17th Conference of Parties ended early Sunday morning, members
did agree to talk about a new global treaty to reduce emissions.

Indigenous Peoples Call for REDD Moratorium
By Stephen Leahy
While climate treaty negotiations became trapped in a maze requiring a European
Union "road map" to provide a way out, the proposed use of forests to offset carbon
emissions continued to raise controversy.
DURBAN, South Africa, Dec 9 (Tierramérica).- A new coalition of indigenous
peoples and local communities called for a moratorium on Reducing Emissions from
Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) programs, a key part of the
negotiations for a new international climate treaty that took place over the last two
weeks in South Africa.
