Mortalidad
Introduction
This edition of the Demographic Observatory presents a series of abridged life tables by sex, estimated and projected
by five-year periods, which were prepared as inputs to national population estimates and projections, disaggregated by
gender and five-year age groups, for the 20 countries of Latin America for the period 1980-2020.
The figures in this publication are a revised version of those presented in Demographic Bulletin No. 74 in July 2004.
The methodological notes of this edition of the Observatory, in addition to a brief description of the methodology
used in the mortality estimates and projections, describe the data sources used for each country.
As usual in the Demographic Observatory, this edition also includes an analytical section containing a general
overview of the information presented. Table 1(a) includes the total population of the 20 countries of Latin America
(and also of the countries and territories of the Caribbean) between 1950 and 2050, and table 1(b) shows the population
of those same countries and territories by calendar year for the period 2005-2015. Tables 2 to 11 present a series of
demographic indicators, including growth rates, global fertility rates, gross birth and death rates, life expectancy at
birth and child mortality rates. Tables 12 to 31 are abridged life tables by sex for the period 1980-2020 for each of the
20 countries of Latin America.
Lastly, the CD-ROM enclosed with this edition, in addition to the tables presented in this publication, contains life
tables for a more extensive period (1950-2050) and information relating to estimates and projections of total, urban,
rural and economically active population. This information is also available online at http://www.eclac.cl/celade.
