Then in 1996, in accordance with the University Reform Law (LRU), a new four-year course was launched and the revised curriculum included Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography, Design, Conservation and Restoration and Art Education. While the various specializations may have changed, the main fields of study and specific competences have continued to be available, along with courses in the various associated disciplines. However, whereas previously the generic degree in Fine Arts covered all options, now with the advent of the European Higher Education Area the UB has diversified its course offering to address specific professional opportunities arising in the marketplace. The Faculty’s current course offering includes three degree qualifications, as recommended in the relevant White Paper and in line with previous agreements made at various meetings of the Faculty of Fine Arts Conference of Deans. Universitat de Barcelona 4 Universitat de Barcelona 5 <<Degree courses>> <<EHEA bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts>> The main objective of the degree in Fine Arts is to train students for professional artistic and creative activity, allowing them to exercise a commitment to contemporary society through their work and receive full recognition of their abilities. In addition, the course prepares graduates to be able to apply their knowledge to creative and experimental processes in both specific and cross-disciplinary fields, enabling them to develop artistic and cultural practices in diverse formats and settings. Ultimately, the Fine Arts degree is designed to train creative artists to be competent in the visual arts and related fields and to give them a solid education in visual culture, thus preparing 6 Faculty of Fine Arts them for ongoing postgraduate study in Spain or Europe. All the above skills are seen as essential elements of fine arts study, as graduate professionals will go on to provide creative and innovative answers to new realities arising in twentyfirst century society. It offers students training in the theoretical, practical, technical and scientific areas of knowledge that underpin the skills and abilities required for careful and thoughtful examination, diagnosis, documentation, preventive conservation, curative con- 8 Faculty of Fine Arts servation and restoration of cultural assets. In a general sense, the objective of the degree is to train conservator-restorers to be able to perform the essential activity of their profession: the preservation of cultural heritage. This is based on the knowledge, examination and diagnosis of cultural assets, preventative and curative methods of conservation and restoration, and the documentation of the various processes and treatments involved. Number of ECTS credits: 240 Branch of knowledge: Arts and Humanities Faculty or school: Faculty of Fine Arts Universitat de Barcelona 9 <<Estudios de grado>> <<EHEA bachelor’s degree in Design>> Objectives To train designers and design experts to be able to fill the diverse professional roles offered by the design sector and integrate comprehensively into current and future job markets. Graduate designers will be able to exercise their profession in accordance with specific job requirements and the code of ethics, managing all technical aspects related to design, from the initial conception of a product, communication or service, through visualization, production, reproduction, and distribution or final implementation in the market. To ensure the academic and professional recognition of graduates, so that they also 10 Faculty of Fine Arts have access to the European job market as designers. To encourage students to use research to develop a better practical understanding of design and culture, and to learn how to apply economic strategies as they relate to design. Also to introduce students to the practice of design research such that they learn to meet the high standards and rigor characteristic of academic work. To reinforce the skills and knowledge common to all design specializations, including traditional practices as well as new applications evolving from the current dynamic of the profession, specifically characterized by the progressive elimination of borders between specializations. To promote comprehensive design training, giving students a sufficient knowledge base to be able contribute to the conception, development, planning and production of visual and cultural material in the social, cultural, aesthetic and economic dimensions. Therefore, the UB EHEA bachelor’s degree in Design takes a generalist approach to the phenomenon of design as a discipline and as a creative professional practice.
