Cultural Catholics
Lately we’ve been hearing and reading about ‘cultural’ Catholics, Jews, Protestants, etc. It’s
the kind of phrase that seeps into common use and overuse. Let’s take a look at what it means.
The connotation of ‘cultural’ religion followers, be they Catholics, Protestants, or Jews, seems
to be a negative description of those followers. What does it really mean to be a cultural Catholic?
Cultural Catholics are those who identify with at least some Catholic teachings and traditions,
likely because of upbringing, but are not always active in the Catholic Church. It seems that the
phrase came into more common use after a 2015 report by the Pew Research Center.
One group, when asked about their current religion, responded that they are Catholics in the
sense that they “claim the faith as their current religion.” Another group said they “were raised in
the faith and have now fallen away.” But the Pew report uncovered a striking fact: Nine percent of
Americans say that they are Catholics, but that Catholicism is not their religion. These are people
they called ‘cultural Catholics.’
Some do not claim Catholicism as their religion since they are now Protestants, atheists,
agnostics, or have no religious affiliation. Yet they also regard themselves as “indelibly Catholic by
culture, ancestry, ethnicity, or family tradition.” If Catholicism is a religion, then why do so many
Americans call themselves Catholics and yet do not have a Catholic religious identity?
As the Pew report shows, American Catholics hold onto the identity that they have inherited,
but they don’t think of that identity as religious unless they have chosen it for themselves.
If you were asked what it means to be Catholic how would you answer? When asked that,
some people responded that it was “a matter of religion,” others that it is a matter of “ancestry or
culture.” Religion and religious identity are seen as distinct from the cultural identity. Pew research
further found that Americans’ assumption about religion is that it is something they choose, not
something they inherit.
Interesting? It gets more interesting.
The study found that 60% of cultural Catholics say that having a personal relationship with
Jesus Christ is essential to what being a Catholic means to them. Also, 57% say the same about
believing in Jesus’ resurrection and 59% say that working to help the poor and needy is essential to
their Catholicism.
So, what are your thoughts after learning more about cultural Catholics? The general
consensus is that the background and upbringing of the cultural Catholic more than likely influences
their actions with their families, their work, and in their communities. Also, at some point they are
more likely to fully embrace Catholicism. This is definitely an opportunity for each of us to reach out
and invite those Catholics to the full experience of our faith.

Últimamente hemos estado oyendo y leyendo sobre Católicos, Judíos, Protestantes ‘culturales’, etc.
Es el tipo de frase que se filtra en el uso común y el sobre uso. Demos una mirada a lo que esto significa.
La religión ‘cultural’ ya sea que los seguidores sean Católicos, Protestantes, o Judíos parece ser una
descripción negativa de todos esos seguidores. ¿Que es lo que significa realmente ser un Católico
cultural?
Los católicos culturales son aquellos que se identifican por lo menos con algunas enseñanzas y
tradiciones católicas, quizás por haber sido criados dentro de la iglesia católica, pero no siempre están
activos. Parece que el uso de la frase se hizo más común después de una investigación hecha en el 2015
por el Centro de Investigación de Bancos de Iglesia (Pew Research Center).
Cuando se le preguntó a un grupo de personas sobre su religión presente ellos respondieron que
son católicos en el sentido de que ellos ‘claman la fe como su religión presente.’ Otro grupo dijo que ‘ellos
fueron criados en la fe y ahora se han alejado.’ Pero el reportero descubrió un hecho sorprendente:
Nueve por ciento de los americanos dicen ser católicos, pero que el catolicismo no es su religión. Estas
son las personas llamadas ‘católicos culturales.’
Algunos no reclaman el catolicismo como su religión porque ahora son protestantes, ateos,
agnósticos, o no tienen afiliación religiosa. Aun así ellos también se consideran como “indeleblemente
católicos por cultura, por sus antepasados, etnicidad, o tradición familiar.” Si el catolicismo es una
religión, entonces ¿por qué tantos Americanos se llaman así mismos católicos pero no tienen una
identidad religiosa católica?
Como la investigación muestra, los Americanos católicos se agarran a la identidad que han
heredado, pero ellos no ven la identidad como una religión a menos que ellos la hayan escogido por ellos
mismos.
Si a ti te preguntaran ¿qué significa ser católico? ¿Cómo hubieras contestado? Cuando les hicieron
esta pregunta, algunas personas respondieron que se trataba de “una cosa de religión,” otros contestaron
que es una cosa de “herencia o cultura.” Religión e identidad religiosa son vistas como algo distinto a la
identidad cultural. La investigación además encontró que la suposición sobre religión es que es algo que
ellos escogen, no es algo que se hereda.
¿Interesante? Se pone más interesante.
La investigación encontró que el 60% de los católicos culturales dicen que el tener una relación
personal con Jesucristo es esencial para lo que para ellos significa ser católico. 57% dicen lo mismo sobre
creer en la resurrección de Jesús y el 59% dicen que trabajar para ayudar al pobre y al necesitado es
esencial para su catolicismo.
Entonces, ¿cuáles son tus pensamientos después de aprender más sobre católicos culturales? El
consenso general es que el historial y la crianza del católico cultural tienen mucha influencia sobre sus
acciones en sus familias, su trabajo, y sus comunidades. También, en algún momento ellos están más
propensos a abrazar completamente el catolicismo. Esto es definitivamente una oportunidad para que
cada uno de nosotros vallamos e invitemos a esos católicos a experimentar completamente nuestra fe.
