Dear STEM Parents, Our first semester ended with the Winter

Dear STEM Parents,
Our first semester ended with the Winter Festivus that included engineering challenges in the morning
and community service activities in the afternoon. For the engineering challenges, students worked in
teams comprised of 3rd-8th graders to create (top of Bloom’s Taxonomy of cognitive domains) a product
based on specific parameters. The students worked well together, and it was not always the older
students who took charge of the group. In the afternoon, teams of students made knot blankets for
children at Mercy Hospital, wrote letters to service men and women in the armed forces and made knot
scarves and hygiene kits that we delivered to Hesed House.
Now we are digging into second semester after a slow start brought on by the cold weather. All of the
students are working on the geology portion of the Geology and Space unit. The scaffold for this unit
looks like this:






3rd grade is focusing on earth’s materials
4th grade is focusing on earth’s changing surface
5th grade is focusing on earth’s spheres
6th grade is focusing on geological time
7th grade is focusing on the rock cycle
8th grade is focusing on plate tectonics
The 3rd and 4th grade students have been interacting weekly with scientists and engineers at Cabot
Microelectronics learning about their jobs and how they use math and science. The 3rd and 5th grades
will be visited by experts from the Fox Metro Water Reclamation District to discuss how our local water
is recycled for our use, and Waste management will be working with 5th graders as they prepare projects
that will be displayed at the GreenTown conference held at the Roundhouse in late February. The 5th
grade has also been on the rooftop greenhouse using Vermier sensors to learn about UV rays. They are
also decomposing vegetables in two liter bottles in order to produce methane gas.
Our middle school is going to visit Argonne National Laboratory where they will be in the education
center conducting activities. Engineers from Cabot and Caterpillar are coming to STEM this month to
talk with students about their companies and engage students in some of the problems they have to
solve at work. The whole school will attend a concert by organist David Schrader. These events bring
the learning to an experiential level, whereby students see a direct correlation to the concepts in class
and their application in the real-world.
You can help solidify this learning. Talk with your child each night and ask questions pertaining to the
current STEM unit. You can extend the discussion beyond science by asking what materials they are
reading in conjunction to the unit and what type of math they are doing within the activities. This
fosters the collaborative relationship between home and school and stimulates reflection, which
deepens their understanding of the concepts.
The second semester is always a hectic one as we carefully plan around mandated testing, the end of
the school year and any unforeseen days off due to bad weather. Speaking of which, we will need to
make up the two days we already missed by extending the year into our emergency days, May 28-June
3, so please do not make any travel plans that include those days.
Our ELA and Math PARCC testing windows are March 2-13 and April 27-May 7. Information was
previously sent out about this testing via email. The middle school math classes have been practicing
one PARCC question per week. It would also be beneficial for parents to take a look at the PARCC
website and do some test problems with your child. Due to the shift to the Common Core State
Standards, the difficulty level of the content has increased greatly. We are encouraging students to
begin practicing with problems two grades below the students’ current grade level, due to the level of
complexity. The more exposure our students have to these questions, the better they will do when it
counts!
New club sessions have started or will be starting soon! We are running a second session of Lego
Robotics and will likely run a third this year. Chess Club is back by popular demand. We will likely run a
third session of that club as well. Four new clubs, student council, computer programming, drama and
Spanish, will launch this semester if there is enough interest. The GROW program started this week.
The first six-week session filled quickly, so it is likely we will run a second session in the spring. Girls On
the Run will be rolled out in the early spring. WHEW! There is no shortage of ambition with this group
of students and teachers!
Our PTSA is off to a strong start. After the initial get together at Luigi’s, the organization has formed
committees to establish fund raisers, social events and community outreach. Keep an eye out for emails
and web site announcements about upcoming events.
We are collaborating with Aurora University’s Career Services Department to host a STEM Career
Speaker Series this spring. We are inviting people who work in the STEM field to talk about their jobs
and the training they needed to get into the STEM field. There will be a letter posted on the web site
soon and emailed home. If you or someone you know is interested in presenting, you can contact me

Queridos Padres de la Escuela STEM,
Terminamos nuestro primer semestre con una celebración del invierno que incluyo proyectos ingenieros
por la mañana y actividades dedicados a servicios comunitarios por la tarde. Para los proyectos
ingenieros, los estudiantes trabajaron en equipos de estudiantes en grados 3-8 para crear (el nivel más
alto de la Taxonomía de Dominios Cognitivos creado por Bloom) un producto basado en parámetros
específicos. Los estudiantes trabajaron bien juntos, y no siempre fueron los estudiantes mayores que se
hicieron de cargo del equipo. En la tarde, los equipos hicieron cobijas para los niños que están en el
hospital Mercy, escribieron cartas para personas en las fuerzas armadas e hicieron bufandas y estuches
de higiene que fueron donados a Hesed House.
Ahora estamos involucrados en el segundo semestre después de un empiezo lento por causa del clima.
Todos los estudiantes están trabajando en la porción de geología que pertenece en la unidad de
Geología y Espacio. La estructura de esta unidad parece así:






3 grado está enfocándose en la materias de la tierra
4 grado está enfocándose en los cambios del superficie de la tierra
5 grado está enfocándose en las esferas de la tierra
6 grado está enfocándose en el tiempo geológico
7 grado está enfocándose en el ciclo de las rocas
8 grado está enfocándose en las placas tectónicas
Los estudiantes en los grados 3 y 4 han estado interactuando semanalmente con científicos e ingenieros
de Cabot Microelectronics y aprendiendo sobre esas ocupaciones y como ellos utilizan matemáticas y
ciencia. Los estudiantes en grados 3 y 5 serán visitados por los expertos de Fox Metro Water
Reclamation District para discutir como nuestra agua local se recicla para nuestro uso. La compañía,
Waste Management, estará trabajando con los estudiantes del grado 5 en preparación para proyectos
que serán demostrados en la conferencia GreenTown que será en el Roundhouse en los últimos de
febrero. Los estudiantes de grado 5 también han estado en el invernadero localizado en el techo de la
escuela usando sensores de Vernier para aprender sobre los rayos ultravioleta. Ellos están produciendo
gas metano por medio de descomponer verduras dentro de botellas de dos litros.

organista David Schrader. Estos eventos traerán todo el aprendizaje a un nivel experimental, en donde
los estudiantes podrán ver una correlación directa a los conceptos que ellos aprenden en clase y como
se aplican en la vida real.
Usted pude ayudar solidificar este aprendizaje. Hable con su hijo(a) cada noche y haga preguntas que
per tengan a la unidad actual de STEM. Usted puede extender la discusión fuera del tema de ciencia por
medio de hacer preguntas sobre cuales materias ellos están leyendo conjunto a la unidad y que tipo de
matemáticas están haciendo dentro de las actividades. Haciendo esto fomenta la relación colaborativa
entre su hogar y la escuela y también estimula reflexión, lo cual fortalece su entendimiento sobre los
conceptos.
El segundo semestre siempre es uno frenético, porque tenemos que planear alrededor de exámenes
obligatorios, el final del año y días fuera imprevistos causados por el clima. Hablando de esto,
necesitamos reponer los dos días que faltamos y tendremos que extender el año usando nuestros días
de emergencia, 28 de Mayo a 3 de junio. Por favor no planea viajes durante esos días.
Nuestras ventanas para dar los exámenes de ELA y Matemáticas PARCC son 2-13 de marzo y 27 de abril
– 7 mayo. Yo envié esta información por medio de correo electrónico. Las clases de los grados 6-8 han
estado practicando una pregunta semanalmente del examen PARCC. Sería un gran beneficio para
padres si visitan a la página de internet de PARCC y practique algunas problemas con su hijo(a). Debido
al cambio a las Normas Académicas Estatales Comunes del Currículo de Educación Básica (CCSS), el nivel
de dificultad ha aumentado considerablemente. Por esta razón, estamos avisando que los estudiantes
empiecen a practicar con problemas dos grados menos de su grado actual. Lo más exposición que los
estudiantes tengan a estas preguntas, ¡lo mejor que ellos realizaran en su examen!
¡Nuevos clubs han empezado o empezaran pronto! Estamos iniciando una segunda sesión de Lego
Robotics y probablemente tendremos una tercera sesión. El club de ajedrez regresara a la petición del
público. Es probable que también se iniciara una tercera sesión de ese club también. Cuatro clubs
nuevos, consejo estudiantil, programación de ordenadores, drama y español, también empezaran este
semestre si es que hay suficiente interés. El programa GROW empezó esta semana. La primera sesión
de seis semanas se llenó tan rápido que es muy probable que vayamos a iniciar otra sesión en la
primavera. El programa de Girls on the Run también empieza en la primavera. ¡WHEW! ¡No falta
ambición con este grupo de estudiantes y maestras!
Nuestra PTSA tuvo un empiezo fuerte. Después de la reunión en Luigis, la organización ha formado
comités para establecer recaudamiento de fondos, eventos sociales, y servicios comunitarios. Este

Estamos trabajando con el departamento de servicios laborales de Aurora University para tener una
serie de oradores esta primavera. Estamos invitando a personas que trabajan en áreas de STEM para
hablar sobre sus trabajos y el entrenamiento que se necesita para meterse en estas careras. Habrá una
