In the 1970s, small groups of researchers, architects and planners combined their efforts to develop what was hoped to become a new paradigm for designers: People-Environment relations. Organizations such as EDRA in North America, IAPS in Europe, PAPER in Asia, and MERA in Australia were born. Their common mission was to examine the relationships between people and place with the intention of improving the quality of physical settings in order to enhance people’s lives. Several decades later, one must admit that if peopleenvironment studies are still very much alive, their impact on the way architecture is being taught, practiced and built remains limited. Why these two solitudes? What’s missing to bridge the gap between research and design? My hypothesis is twofold. First, while P-E research developed, originally in social sciences and more recently in public health and environmental sciences, the traditional design studio training model has hardly changed; second, research continues to be conducted with little understanding of the type of data that designers need to integrate it into the creative process. To overcome this situation, I will insist on the need: 1) to develop P-E research aiming at solving complex design problems rather than developing disciplinary knowledge; 2) to teach students how to use empirical evidences in the design process; 3) to favor collaborative design studios that integrate researchers and stakeholders from various backgrounds with different perspectives. I shall illustrate how each of these goals can be realized with concrete examples from the program of research and action that the Interdisciplinary Research Group of Suburbs (GIRBa) has been conducting in Quebec City since 2001, in close collaboration with students in the Master’s programs in architecture, in urban design and in research at Laval University. I will conclude by pointing out challenges facing both universities and professional orders in terms of revising educational culture. 11:30 COAC Sala de Actos/COAC Lecture Hall Café/ Coffee Break 12:00 – 13.00 COAC Sala de Actos/COAC Lecture Hall Conferencia/Lecture Pihla Meskanen. "The success of the Cistercian adventure is what actually accounts for Poblet. Cister was founded in 1098, and Poblet in 1151, less than a hundred years later. Both the 12th and 13th centuries are essential to the history of our monastery. Most rooms and buildings were, in fact, finished during those centuries : a space, both beautiful and functional, whereby to seek God. Such a space has come down to us virtually intact. The 14th century was a century of great achievements, but also that of the decline, slow but sure. We must point out that the known records of the time, and which refer to the private life of the community of Poblet, don’t show any noticeable deviations from the original ideals of the founders of Cister and, likewise, the founders of Poblet, who originated from Fontfroide. In fact, this, which is the true history of Poblet, has never been written and probably never will. The history of the monks who, day after day, made the growth and continuity of the house possible, the "domus Populeti." Thus we could explain the succession of the days and years over the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries: Poblet, the institution, the community, its monks, all hasten to find a new visage, new features, forms different from what they intimately live in their hearts. Not always, though, will they succeed in doing so with the transparency and rigor of the first ideal. The 19th century will sow, in a society going through radical changes, the seed of a future recovery, in spite of the abandonment and subsequent plunder of the monastery (...) Today the monks, the ancestral ones’ heirs, are perpetually grateful for this legacy, because authenticity is possibly one of the most important values that we can and must offer the men and women of our time." «When a visitor to Poblet strolls into the monastery and finds himself wrapped in its architectural wonders, which, as Pla himself said, “are a world of forms, traditions and symbols”, and after enjoying the sheer spectacle of light and stone, there springs inside him a series of questions: All this, why is it so? How has Poblet become what it is? What was the primordial intention and what process created this wise composition of buildings and styles? What institution, and through what difficulties, begot, century after century, such a monumental work of art? What kind of relationship with the outside world did they have, those who made this artistic and historical reality possible?». Gaudí’s Plan for Poblet (1867-1869): A utopian, renovation and expansion project of Poblet to turn the monastery complex into a campus. POBLET BY GAUDÍ On our way to Poblet we will visit Antoni Gaudi’s birthplace ("Mas de la Calderera” near Tarragona), Reus Museum (Gaudí’s handwritten treatises), and some of the Roman, ancient ruins in Tarragona near his high school district. Following high school Gaudi moved to start his university studies in Barcelona. The medieval and ancient ruins of Poblet and Tarraco prompted Gaudí to study architecture. He was impressed by the austere, majestic ruins of the Cistercian abbey, which was a fortified royal residence of the Catalan-Aragonese confederation. Some of the tombs were transferred and kept in the cathedral of Tarragona. From 1867 to 1869, as a Romantic teenager, Antoni Gaudí organised a volunteer heritage restoration camp in Poblet. The European, cultural movement of Romanticism had also influenced his quest for Catalan identity in the medieval past. In 1876 he designed a Spanish pavilion at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, which was never built; he had planned to decorate the stand with names from Catalan history that had been associated with Roger de Flor's expedition to Philadelphia of Asia Minor in the year 1304. With his friends he repaired some of Poblet’s valuable architectural remains; paintings and furniture had been removed and dispersed. Most of the buildings were abandoned by 1835 and they were renovated when Italian monks inhabited the monastery again in 1940. Gaudí aimed at founding a new utopian community for the sciences and the arts, a sort of a contemporary university campus. During the summer camps of 1867,1868 and 1869 he trained his schoolmates Eduard Toda and Josep Ribera, among others, on technical skills to discover the architectural heritage not only of Poblet but also of his entire native region ...........................................................
