Jean Claude GANDUR
A Swiss citizen born in Grasse (France) in 1949, Jean Claude Gandur is known as an art collector, entrepreneur and
philanthropist.
He grew up in Alexandria (Egypt) and in the canton of Vaud (Switzerland) and started building on his family’s
collection. His passion for art came to life when he was given a small, early Christian oil lamp as a present by his
grandmother when he was nine. This passion revealed his outstanding capacity to recognize exceptional works of art.
Starting with ancient art, and then expanding to modern abstract painting, he then added furniture and other great
pieces from medieval times to the 1900s. He created the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art in 2010, in order to conserve
and enrich the collection, and to promote public access to its works in museums around the world, through loans and
loan exhibitions.
Jean Claude Gandur the entrepreneur started his carrier in an international trading company in Zug (Switzerland) in
1976, before starting his own company, the Addax and Oryx Group, in 1987. This was the start of an extraordinary
business venture, characterised by exceptional business flair, an entrepreneurial model based on socially-responsible
investing, and the ability to build expertise in areas previously unknown to the group – from downstream oil to
commercial real estate.
Following in his family’s tradition - conscious and grateful of everything that life, good fortune and professional
success bring - Jean Claude Gandur believes that he has a moral obligation to ensure the community also benefits
from his success. The Addax and Oryx Foundation was created in 1996 to help fight the root causes of poverty in Africa
and the Middle East, and the Fondation Gandur pour la Jeunesse was founded in 2011 to support children and young
people in difficulty in Switzerland.

Creció entre Alejandría (Egipto) y el cantón suizo de Vaud y ha construido su colección a partir de un fondo familiar.
Su pasión por el arte surgió a los 9 años, cuando su abuela le regaló una pequeña lámpara de aceite paleocristiana.

Founded in 2010 by international art collector and entrepreneur Jean Claude Gandur, the Fondation
Gandur pour l’Art is a non-profit organisation dedicated to furthering cultural education and understanding
through public access to its world-class art collections. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the
Foundation works to preserve, enrich and exhibit its collections, in close partnership with Geneva’s Art and
History Museum (les Musées d’art et d’histoire de la Ville de Genève) and other institutions of exceptional
calibre worldwide.
The Vision
The Foundation pursues Jean Claude Gandur’s vision that art should be made open and accessible,
reflecting his conviction that culture creates bridges between peoples and facilitates social integration.
What began as Jean Claude Gandur’s intense passion for art at an early age has become one of the world’s
most prestigious private collections, providing a rare opportunity for the appreciation and understanding of
cultural heritage.
In addition to its affiliation with Geneva’s Art and History Museum, the Foundation shares its collections
with museums and cultural institutions around the world through numerous loans and exhibitions.
Modernity Meets Antiquity
The Foundation’s collections are an impressive crossroads between the ancient and modern worlds: from
the age of the pharaohs of the seventh millennium BC to Europe of the late twentieth century. The
collections cover three distinct areas:
1. Archaeology: over 1,000 works of art from Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Near East, bearing
witness to the many facets of these diverse civilizations.
2. Fine Arts: more than 600 works of modern and contemporary art, focusing on European post-war
paintings from the Second School of Paris (1945-1962), the CoBrA movement, the Narrative
Figuration and New Realism.
3. Decorative arts: over 350 exceptional quality pieces, ranging from medieval sculpture to French
furniture of the eighteenth century, represented by the greatest names of each period, including
works by such master cabinetmakers as Riesener, Weisweiler and Carlin.

the standards of professional practice and performance established by the code of ethics of the
International Council of Museums (ICOM), of which it is a member. This includes respecting rightful
