Amaia Lujambio, winner of the Eduardo Gallego Grant
Madrid, October 8 2007- Amaia Lujambio, a graduate student from Cancer Epigenetics
Group led by Dr Manel Esteller, in the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO),
was awarded with the Eduardo Gallego Grant of the Francisco Cobos Foundation. The
formal event was held at the Headquarters of the Spanish High Research Council (CSIC)
on October 3. In attendance was the president of CSIC, Carlos Martínez-Alonso. The
event culminated with the outstanding conference delivered by the researcher Susumo
Tonegawa, Nobel Prize 1987, that currently works in the MIT (Massachussets Institute of
Technology), in USA.
Through the Eduardo Gallego Grant the Francisco Cobos Foundation aims to cast
the spot light into the work of young researchers taking their first steps in the biomedical
field and already achieving excellence albeit their scientific career is still short and
international repute is yet to come.
On this edition, the Eduardo Gallego Grant for young B.Sc. degree-holders has
been granted to Amaia Lujambio, a member of the Cancer Epigenetics Group led by Manel
Esteller at the CNIO, where she carries her doctoral research work. Amaia Lujambio was
born in Goizueta (Navarra) in 1982. She received his Honours B.Sc. Degree in Biology in
2005 by the University of Navarra, and the 2nd Spanish National Prize in Biology Degree in
2006 by the Ministry of Science and Education. She has already been part of some edgecutting biomedical research projects, such as the study of epigenetic mechanisms of
microRNA silencing in cancer, and authored significant research articles recently published

Amaia Lujambio, ganadora de una beca Eduardo Gallego
Madrid, 8 de octubre, 2007- En un acto celebrado el 3 de octubre en la sede central
del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) se hizo entrega de la beca
Eduardo Gallego de la Fundación Francisco Cobos a Amaia Lujambio, estudiante de
doctorado del laboratorio de Epigenética dirigido por el Dr Manel Esteller en el Centro
Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO). La ceremonia contó con la presencia del
presidente del CSIC, Carlos Martínez-Alonso. El evento culminó con la conferencia
magistral impartida por el investigador Susumo Tonegawa, premio Nobel de Medicina de
1987, del Massachussets Institute of Technology, MIT, en EEUU.
La Fundación Francisco Cobos mediante la beca Eduardo Gallego pretende dar a
conocer la labor de jóvenes investigadores en el campo de la biomedicina que están dando
sus primeros pasos y que, si bien no gozan de consagración internacional o una dilatada
carrera, realizan aportaciones de excelencia en esta disciplina.
En esta edición, la beca Eduardo Gallego ha recaído en su modalidad de Jóvenes
Licenciados en Amaia Lujambio, integrante del Grupo de Epigenética del Cáncer del
CNIO, donde realiza su tesis doctoral bajo la dirección de Manel Esteller. Amaia Lujambio
nació en Goizueta (Navarra) en 1982, se licenció en Biología en 2005 obteniendo el
Premio Extraordinario de Licenciatura de Biología de la Universidad de Navarra y el
segundo Premio Nacional de Licenciatura. En el breve transcurso de su carrera científica
ha participado en proyectos punteros dentro de la biomedicina, como en el estudio de los
mecanismos de silenciamiento epigenéticos de los microRNAs en cáncer. Así, sus
investigaciones han dado lugar a un artículo en la revista Cancer Research y una revisión
en la revista Cell Cycle:
