THE “ESTANQUILLO” MUSEUM
Good morning dear parents, teachers and friends.
Did you know that from Carlos Monsivais desire in sharing his composed of more
than 20,000 pieces, was the origin of this museum?
¡That’s right! It was founded in November 2006 and the name was taken because
of the diversity of his collection. In fact, this name draws an analogy with small
shops as in Mexico in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were known as
“newsstand” arises, where it was possible to acquire virtually all types’ goods.
This is how this wealth to appreciate different perspectives and views on political,
social and cultural life in Mexico throughout its recent history. In the inventory are
representative works of Teodoro Torres and Susana Navarro, Roberto Ruiz,
Teresa Nava or Alberto Isaac, Rius among others.
Even more, the Estanquillo Museum is located in one of the most iconic corners of
the historic center of Mexico City, at the junction of the streets of Isabella the
Catholic and Francisco I. Madero.
The building is called La Esmeralda, having been built specifically in the late
nineteenth century to house one of the most luxurious jewelries country, La
Esmeralda Hauser-Zivy and Company. So, by itself, this site has been, since the
late nineteenth century to the present day, an emblematic site.
Currently, the “La Esmeralda” and specifically Estanquillo Museum building has
three showrooms, in which, temporarily, different exposures are shown with Carlos
Monsivais collections; a reading room, with more than 2000 books with themes
specializing mainly in Mexico history, literature and fine arts. Finally, a terrace
where, periodically, book presentations and cultural activities with a stunning
theatrical frame is made.
Carlos Mosivais Collections
Over four decades, Carlos Monsivais, was devoted to locate objects that reflect its
proximity to the country and the city what today is within the acquis Estanquillo
Museum, which has achieved so far, a catalog of over twenty thousand pieces,
action remains a work continuous this venue.
All these objects as a whole, represent and embody the vision that had Monsivais
collector of Mexico, through paintings, prints, cartoons, maps, models,
photographs, posters, albumns, calendars, scores and objects of great historical
value. Hence the name Estanquillo Museum, a clear evocation of the premises
until a few years ago “Estanquillo” were called and where you could find a lot of
objects of various kinds.
In general, the collections are pieces as recognized as Ernesto Garcia Cabral,
Diego Rivera, Jose Guadalupe Posada, Andrés Audiffred, Leopoldo Mendez and
now on you can watch a special caricature cartoons by Alberto Isaac, and Rius.
It is imposible to show all parts of the acquis at a time. Therefore, the Mueseum
invites Estanquillo be visited several times a year, so we can see in each of these
occasions, a very diverse set of collections, a different stage in our history, a
different “portrait”.
SOME RECOMMENDATIONS
In summer and warm days, it is convenient to visit with warm clothes, since due to
the temperature difference with the outside can be chill.
It is allowed to take pictures without flash and without professional or
semiprofessional camera
The cloakroom is available, you do not have places to despot scooters and it is
allowed to use strollers.
You can no access the museum with animals, except for guide dogs.
Children must be accompanied during the visit by an adult
You can access the rooms with sharp objects
The eviction of the exhibition rooms begins 10 minutes before closing time.
