I’m Greg and I’m 29 years old. I’m a
factory worker. We make food for hotels
and conferences. I like my job, but there’s
just one problem – my work hours. You
see, I work from ten in the evening until
six in the morning. So, when you’re at
work or in class, I’m in bed! I get up late

Hello and welcome to ”Science Today“.
In this week’s program, we look at the
problem of tired teenagers. Many parents
have the same problem – their sons and
daughters just can’t get up in the morning.
So why is this? Are they just lazy?
Well, we know from scientific studies that
young people have a different internal
clock. They are fine late at night, but they
don’t feel good early in the morning. They
are often tired, so they don’t feel happy.
Sometimes they are even angry with their
parents and their friends.
But a school in Massachusetts near Boson
thinks it has the answer. Hampton High
School has a new “no-mornings” schedule
for its students ages 16 to 18. So the first
class of the day isn’t at nine o’clock. The
new school day for older students starts
at 1:30 and finishes at seven o’clock.
The principal thinks students are more
interested in their work when they aren’t
tired and stressed.
And what about the parents? Most of them
think it’s a good idea. And they like driving
to school when the traffic isn’t so bad!

M Hello and welcome to our opening day
at SportsAble. It’s great to see so many
people here today. So first let me tell you
a little about SportsAble. We’re a sports
disability charity, but a charity with a
difference. We don’t just have offices – we
have our own recreation center. We
have two swimming pools, two gyms, and
a large field for outdoor sports. This means
we can help disabled people do a lot of
different activities. And here are just a
few examples: swimming, ping pong, golf,
and archery.
And our new sport for this year is
wheelchair basketball – it’s very fast and
really fun. And it’s a very popular event at
the Paralympics. Here at SportsAble, we’re
also part of the Paralympics. SportsAble
was a training center for the Games in
London in 2012.

Sure. I’m a stand-up comedian.
It’s my job to make people laugh.
But I don’t just do it through
single jokes.

Did you have a good birthday?
Hmm, I don’t think “good” is really
the right word.
Why, what happened?
Well, my gift from Rob was a
surprise. I knew it was a trip,
but he didn’t say where. He
told me we had to go on a long
car ride before I could have my
surprise. So, we got up early in the
morning. I went to get the car out
of the garage and … we had a flat
tire.
Oh, no!
Yes, but Rob changed the tire
quickly and then we left the house.
My birthday was the same day
as a big sports event in the city,
so there was traffic everywhere.
We got to the highway and then
waited and waited and waited.
Finally, we started to move , but
we were on the road for at least
two hours.
OK, so what was your surprise?
Wait a minute, there’s more. We
drove into the middle of a huge
parking lot. And then it started to
rain and it was really windy. Rob
got a text, and he looked really
disappointed. I had to wait for my
surprise because of the weather.
So that was another hour in the
car.

Then, at about four o’clock, the
sun came out and the weather was
much better. We got out of the
car, and there was a big group of
people next to small office. They all
had tickets and a lot of them had
cameras. I didn’t really understand
why they were there. Anyway,
we waited for a long time, and at
that point, I was really hungry. We
didn’t have lunch because of all
the traffic and bad weather.
So what was your surprise?
At five o’clock, we walked into
a field. And then I saw a hot air
balloon. That was my surprise – a
ride in a hot air balloon.
That’s wonderful! How romantic!

being high up in the air. But Rob
was so excited. I had to get into
the balloon and spend an hour
with my eyes closed, holding onto
the ropes. Rob loved it. He took
about a hundred pictures. I just
wanted to get out. I was so happy
when we landed back in the field
and I was safe.

Magda I like the idea of dress-down Friday

Well, this is an idea we tried in my last
job and it was very successful. Work is
very tiring, so my idea is that can take
a “cat nap” at work. The idea is that
you can put your head on your desk
just for a short time and feel rested.
People pay for every minute they
aren’t working – maybe 50 cents per
minute. But there’s a maximum of 15
minutes! You can’t nap all day!
