Men and women have different reproductive organs. A woman's ovaries produce egg cells, and her uterus can carry a developing baby. A man's testes produce sperm. Other glands add fluids to the sperm. Prostate gland A gland that produces some of the fluid part of the semen. Testicles A pair of oval-shaped glands that produce sperm. Vas deferens A pair of ducts leading from the testicles to the seminal vesicle, through which the sperm travel. Scrotum The pouch of skin that contains the testes. Seminal Vesicle A pair of glands that also produce some of the fluid part of the semen. Parts of the reproductive system. FEMALE Vagina The female reproductive organ, through which the sperm travels to fertilize the egg. Vulva The outer folds that surround the openings of the vagina and the opening from the bladder called urethra. Ovaries Two organs on either side of the lower abdomen thar releases an egg cell monthly. Uterus An organ, also called the womb, where the fertilized egg cell implants and grows into the unborn baby. Fallopian Tubes A pair of tubes running from the ovary to the uterus, through which an egg cell travels. 2 12/11/2021 01 HOW DOES PREGNANCY HAPPEN? Male: Sperm Cell Structure The journey of the sperm. Spermatozoa It’s the male sex cell which can be fertilized to develop a new organism. Male sex cells are in the seminal fluid (semen). They combine with the female cells and créate completely a new organism. 3 12/11/2021 Female: Egg Cell Structure It’s the female sex cell which carry a man’s genetic material. The journey of the egg cell. Fertilization happens when a sperm cell successfully meets an egg cell in the fallopian tube. Once fertilization takes place, this newly fertilized cell is called a zygote. From here, the zygote will move down the fallopian tube and into the uterus. The zygote then burrows into the uterus lining. Male + Female = Fertilization • Fertilization of an egg by sperm, normally occurs in the fallopian tubes. Fertilized egg is called zygote.
