My Cat
She settled into my home as if she had always lived there. My brother
and I fought regularly to feed or carry her. Suri loved all the attention
and love that we showed towards her. She, in turn, amused us with her
silly and funny behaviour whenever we were around.
She soon grew to be quite big and healthy. She would walk around
the house with pride and grace. She spent most of her time indoors
watching television and growing fat. She enjoyed Discovery Channel
and Cartoon Network. Her favourite cartoon was Tom and Jerry.
Suri rejected all brands of cat food and enjoyed what we would eat.
She liked rice, chapati, dal, vegetables and potato pickles. Chicken
curry was her favourite!
Suri was very choosy about visitors as she was about her food. With
some visitors, she was friendly, while with others she would keep some
distance. If she liked you, she would sit quietly beside you expecting
your attention. However, if she was unhappy with your presence, she
would frighten you with all kinds of mischief. I am sure Suri would do
this to humiliate me because she was jealous of my friends. Whenever
I spent my valuable time with my friends, she became unhappy. After
my guests would leave my house, I would look at her happy and smiling
to herself in front of the television set and I would have no option but
to forgive her.
Alas, Suri is no more with me today. She died last year due to natural
causes.

Suri was my beautiful black and white cat. I found her shivering with
cold in the corner of the street behind my house. She stole my heart
immediately. I could not neglect her, so I brought her home. Although
it was a quick decision, I never regretted.

Ghalegaun, A Beautiful Gurung Village
Ghalegaun is rich in natural beauty. The dense forests of pine trees,
willow trees and bushy plants gives the village a green look and the
jungles of rhododendron, chestnut, raspberry, nettle, hemp and many
other plants makes the place look colorful and splendid. The presence
of birds like partridges, nightingales, owls, doves, crows, eagles, kites,
vultures and barbets makes it exciting for the bird lovers. In addition,
the presence of various species of wildlife makes the place dangerous
yet interesting.
The Gurung community in the village has their own language and
culture that they respect and preserve. The main festival in Ghalegaun
is Lhosar. It falls on the Nepali month of Poush (December/January).
Dashain and Tihar are also celebrated here during the Chandi Purnima
(full moon) in May. One of the major attractions is the Ghatu dance,
which is performed for four days with great zeal. They also go to the
Dudh-Kunda or Dudh-Pokhari (literally translated as milk pond) to take
a ritual bath and worship the local deities during the Janai Purnima in
the month of August.
The village people are simple, hardworking hill farmers who are happy
with their typical village life. They are friendly and very warm. They
rear domestic livestock like sheep, goats, cows, buffaloes, chickens,
pigeons and ducks.
Ghalegaun is a beautiful village rich with unspoiled natural and
cultural assets. This Gurung village provides the majestic views of the
snow-capped Himalayas in the Annapurna Himalayan range and the
mountains accommodating lush green forests.

I first met Pratikchya when I was in hospital in Pokhara about three years
ago. I was there on a holiday, but had become seriously ill. Pratikchya
was the patient in the next bed. She not only kept me company the
whole time I was in hospital, but also visited me for many weeks after
she recovered from her own illness.
When I returned to Bhairahawa, we kept in touch by letter. Then,
about a year ago, Pratikchya moved to another town with her parents
and started going to school there. Sadly, we have lost touch with each
other, but I will never forget her kindness and help.
In her spare time, Pratikchya liked to read. She loved detective stories
and crime novels. She used to bring me many of her favourite books
to read. I remember she also spoke about the karate lessons she went
to twice a week.
Pratikchya had a quiet but very friendly nature. She was generous as
well as kind-hearted. Whenever she visited me, she always brought
flowers and chocolates. She spoke in a low voice because she was
rather shy. She also blushed very easily, although she had a great sense
of humour.
Pratikchya was pretty. She was tall, fairly slim and in her mid-teens
then. She had a small pretty face, with smiling eyes and long straight
brown hair. She liked to dress casually in bright, colourful clothes which
matched her personality.

The Festival Of Shivaratri
Hindu devotees worship and offer their reverence to Lord Shiva.
Huge crowds gather at Pashupatinath temple to worship lord Shiva.
Devotees from different parts of Nepal as well as from Southeast Asia
come to Kathmandu a week before the day. The devotees keep fast for
the whole day and pray in Shiva temples all over the country.
A large number of devotees come to this temple on Shivaratri as it
is one of the most significant temples of Lord Shiva in the continent.
Devotees stand in line for hours to get a glimpse of Lord Shiva on this
auspicious day. Sadhus from different parts of the continent can be
seen in the temple. Often a fair is held around the Pashupatinath
premises for a week during the Shivaratrifestival. Also holy offerings
and pujas are conducted.
In the evening, people light a holy fire in front of the temple of Lord
Shiva. Devotees bring logs and woods from their home to burn in the
fire. They take rounds around the fire chanting the name of Shiva.
It is believed that keeping the half-burned woods or sticks at home
protects it from evil.
On this day, some people smoke intoxicating marijuana and drink bhang
as they consider them to be the prasad of Lord Shiva. Nonetheless,
this is a malpractice that may lead the youth towards committing
social crimes under its influence. Shivaratri should be celebrated in a
responsible manner so that proper tribute can be paid to Lord Shiva.

It has already been at least five years and I can still remember my first
visit to Pizza Place. Finding the location was not so easy. Even after we
got there, we didn’t get a place to sit. The place was filled with people;
we had to wait for fifteen minutes to get a table. Nevertheless, the
wait was worth it.
Mr. Sharma owns and runs this restaurant in one of the corners of the
town. He has been in business at that very same location since the
time my father was a young boy. Even though the place looks a little
old, it is definitely not because of lack of care. In fact, Mr. Sharma is
proud of how clean he keeps his place. He has often been heard to say,
“It doesn’t matter how poor a person is. They can be clean.”
It is not a fancy restaurant. The carpet is old and faded. The wooden
tables are chipped and scratched in places. The paint on the walls is
cracked and there is a smell of toasted cheese in the air. That night we
found that Mr Sharma’s Pizza Place was a centre of social activity.
When entering the door at Mr. Sharma’s Pizza Place, two things are
immediately noticeable - the place is never empty and seems to consist
of a maze of rooms. The first room, as you enter, is the main part of
the restaurant. There is another, rarely used, dining room off to the

right. Through the main dining room is yet another room that guards
the door leading into the kitchen. This room contains the most special
table in the place. The highest honour that Mr. Sharma can give to
anyone is to allow them seats at this table. This table is the family table
and it is reserved for Mr. Sharma’s family and close friends.
Mr. Sharma’s Pizza Place is always filled with sweet smells of the food.
This smell brings water to anybody’s mouth. The smell is never the
same and depends on what is being cooked at the time. However,
whatever is being cooked, it will taste as good as it smells. The best
part of being here is not the food. It is the feeling of being part of Mr.
Sharma’s extended family.
The last time I was at Pizza Place I felt like time had stopped. It was as
if nothing had changed except the amount of grey in Mr. Sharma’s hair.
The phone still rings constantly, the young people still gather around
and the same aromas fill the place. Everything is just the same.

Pyramid-shaped structures can be found all over the world. Yet,
the most famous pyramids are located in Egypt. The remains of
approximately ninety pyramid sites are scattered across the country.
However, the pyramids of the Giza plateau are the best known. Three
giant stone structures are built on the desert floor and are visible for
miles. Still why are they there and who built them?
Pyramids were used throughout ancient Egypt as tombs for pharaohs.
Pharaohs ruled the kingdoms of ancient Egypt. They were more than
just ordinary kings. Ancient Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was a
living god who they had to worship and obey. When the pharaoh died,
he had to be buried in a special place. Therefore, it was important to
build such a huge monument to bury him.
Because the pyramids are so old, many of them are now just piles of
stones but the pyramids at Giza are still standing tall. The largest of the
three, the tallest pyramid in the world, is the Great Pyramid of Giza.
It was built for the pharaoh Khufu in 2570 B.C. For nearly 4,000 years,
this pyramid was the tallest building on earth. It was originally 480 feet
tall, but because of erosion, it now stands at 450 feet tall. Each side is
750 feet long.
Egyptologists or people who study ancient Egyptian history, are amazed
by how precisely this giant structure was built using the primitive
technologies that would have been available. For example, the builders
were able to make each side the same length. The Pyramids’ sides also
face exactly north, south, east and west.
Originally, Egyptologists thought that it took hundreds of thousands
of slaves almost 30 years to build the Great Pyramid. Today, the most
accepted theory is that farmers worked on the pyramid during the
times of the year when they did not need to be in their fields. It is
also now believed that only about 30,000 people were needed for the
construction.

My Next-door Neighbour
As for her personality, her most striking characteristic is her generosity.
My house, as well as most of our neighbours’, nearly always has a vase
of flowers from her garden in the living room. She is very good-natured
and always has time for a chat. She is also patient. She hardly ever
gets annoyed about anything, except when children pick her favourite
roses and lilies. However, she tends to be quite stubborn. Once she has
made a decision, nothing can change her mind.
Mrs. Upreti always seems to be busy doing something. She spends a
lot of her time looking after her garden. She also sings very well. She
often organizes group prayers and sings bhajans beautifully. Besides
that, she is a trained classical dancer. She is very active even at this age.
When she is not home, she is usually off somewhere raising money for
one charity or another. She is a very noble woman.
Overall, Mrs. Upreti is the perfect next-door neighbour. She is helpful
and kind to all, whether humans or animals. She is liked by everyone
in the neighbourhood. Since my grandmother does not stay with us, I
feel like she is a grandmother figure to me. I am very fond of her.

London: The City That Has It All
There are many impressive sights to see in London, from the historical
beauty of St Paul’s Cathedral and Big Ben, to Buckingham Palace and
the Houses of Parliament. In this city of contrasts, we can be walking

the many huge, peaceful parks. London is a great cultural centre, too.
The National Gallery contains one of the finest collections of classical
paintings in the world.
London is also well known for other things apart from its monuments
and art galleries. Shoppers will enjoy visiting the department stores
on Oxford Street or they could try Harrods, the most exclusive shop
in London. For evening entertainment, the choice of theatres is
enormous. From the famous Southbank Theatre complex to the
smaller theatres of Covent Garden, there is no end of plays to see.
Soho and its pavement cafes are also worth visiting.
London is also one of the fashion capitals of the world. Many people,
who aspire to be designers or models, go to London to realize their
dreams. It is a very popular destination for people who love fashion as
they can find exceptional designer clothing in London.
To sum up, London is an exceptional place, a truly modern city that

Nepal is a country of festivals. More than 50 festivals are celebrated
every year. These festivals vary according to the culture, ethnic
community and per seasons. Among all these festivals, the festival I
like most is Gai Jatra. It is one of the most popular festivals in Nepal.
This festival of cow is celebrated every year in August/September. In
this festival, the family who has lost a relative during the past one year
must take part in a procession by sending young boys in cow like attire
and walk through the streets of Kathmandu lead by a cow. Cow is also
the national animal of Nepal. It is said people in ancient time started
worshiping Yamaraj, “the god of death” on this day. The current form
of Gai Jatra with amusing acts, caricature, comedy and was started by
King Pratap Malla.
I like this festival most because this festival is about humour, satire,
comedy and mockery. Along with that, this festival also teaches us to
accept death as a part of life. In this festival people who have lost their
loved ones also gets to console themselves as they can see that they
are not the only ones.
Gai Jatra is a festival that helps people to admit the reality of death. It
heals misery and sorrow. So, among all the festivals of Nepal, Gai Jatra
is the one I like most.

Jung Bahadur Rana
Jung Bahadur Rana was the first Rana Prime Minister of our country.
He started Rana’s family rule in Nepal in 1847. It took one hundred and
four years for the Nepalese to get rid of this Rana rule.
Jung Bahadur was the son of an army general. His father named him
Bir Narsigh Kunwar but his maternal uncle, who also became a prime
minister later, named him Jung Bahadur because he was brave and
unafraid of anything since his childhood.
Jung Bahadur was born in Borlang of Gorkha district in 1816. Since his
father was a respected man in the palace, he joined the army at the
age of sixteen.
Later, he became the bodyguard of King Surendra. People say he
had to do many dangerous works during those days. There are some
interesting stories about his works.
Once, King Surendra asked a pedestrian to jump from the top of
Dharahara. Dharahara is a nine-storied tower in Kathmandu. The
pedestrian said, “My Lord! I cannot do it. No one can do it. Only Jung
Bahadur can do it.” Immediately the king called Jung Bahadur and
asked him to jump from the top of Dharahara.
Jung Bahadur then took a very strong umbrella as his parachute and
jumped. The king became happy.
People share another similar story about Jung Bahadur. It was monsoon
and the king had been to Nuwakot. The Trishuli River was in its full
brim. The king asked a nearby fellow to jump into the river. Then he
too said, “My lord! Only Jung Bahadur can do it. My lord! Forgive me!
I can’t do it.” The king called Jung Bahadur and asked him to jump into
the river.
Jung Bahadur asked the king to give him a horse so that he could avoid
falling on a stone. Then, riding on a horse, he jumped into the river. The
river swept away the horse but Jung Bahadur swam across the river
and came out.

Tsunami
The name for these enormous waves is tsunami, meaning “harbour
waves” in Japanese. Tsunamis are caused by disturbances in the
ocean, such as an earthquake or undersea volcanic eruption. Although
underwater disturbances are the most common cause of tsunamis,
they can also occur if a large meteorite crashes into the ocean.
Tsunamis may be quite small when they are far out at sea. However, as
they draw closer and closer to shore, they gather power. One sign of
an approaching tsunami is water that goes away from the shore. This
occurs because so much of the ocean water is sucked into the wave as
it gathers strength.
Tsunamis do not consist of a single wave. One wave follows another
in a series that may last several hours. They have destroyed homes,
schools and entire coastal towns in minutes. The force of a wave as it
breaks can be strong enough to travel several hundred feet inland.
An island in Alaska, the USA was hit by a tsunami and later, Hawaii was
struck, too. The waves measured between 24 and 32 feet in height and
arrived at 15 to 20 minute intervals. By the time the tsunamis had run
their course, 159 lives had been taken.
The devastation of these tsunamis led a team of scientists and
government officials to create the Pacific Tsunami Warning System.
They hoped that people would never again suffer such great losses
because they were unaware of a tsunami’s approach. They set up a
system to monitor earthquakes that could cause tsunamis. They also
determined ways to predict the time of arrival of tsunamis so that
people would have time to leave the place.
Unfortunately, there was no such warning system covering the Indian
Ocean on December 26, 2004. An enormous earthquake took place
and caused the deadliest tsunami in history. Countries like Thailand,

The Himalayas
However, scientists say the Himalayas are the youngest mountain
series. They say they were formed about ten million years ago. The
other mountain ranges like the Urals in Europe, the Rockies in North
America and the Andes in South America are older than the Himalayas.
The Himalayas stretch about 2400 kilometres. They cover a large area
of central Asia. They stretch from Afghanistan in the west to Bhutan in
the east including some parts of Pakistan, India, Nepal and China.
The Himalayas are most famous for their tall peaks. More than one
hundred mountains higher than 6,000 metres are standing side by side
in the Himalayas. The Himalayas are home to more than thirty highest
mountains in the world including the world’s highest mountain, Mt.
Everest. Eight of the top ten highest mountains of world are in Nepal.
Nepalese are proud of having such glory.
The Himalayas have played an important role in the history of Asia. The
high peaks of the Himalayas are considered sacred in many religions
including Buddhism and Hinduism. Mt. Kailash in Tibet, for example, is
considered as the abode of Lord Shiva and his wife Parbati.
Standing in between, the Himalayas separated the people on the
south from the people on the north for a long time. The tall mountains
prevented the people from having an easy contact with each other.
Besides, they also prevented people from getting into wars. Since
there was no close contact among the people living on the two sides
of the Himalayas, they became quite different. Their languages, foods
and festivals are really different.
The Himalayas have protected the people on the south. They block
the cold wind from the north and make the southern face warm. They
are also the source of perennial rivers like Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali
in Nepal, Sindhu in Pakistan, Ganges, Brahmaputra and Sutlej in India.
These rivers are fed with huge glaciers sliding from the mountain tops.
