Dear Wildcat Families:
We had a great first week of school! Everything went smoothly and the students transitioned back into school mode right away. For
those of you who are new to Matzke, my
name is Cathy Jacobs and I am the principal
at Matzke. I absolutely love my job and am
honored to be a part of your child’s education. I grew up in this district and graduated
from Cypress Creek High School. I have three children of
my own (1st grade, 5th grade and 6th grade) who attend school
in Cypress Fairbanks ISD. My husband is a Houston Firefighter and graduated from Jersey Village High School. We
can’t imagine a better community or school district in which
to raise our children.
At Matzke, our goal is to have open communication with
our families. Your child’s education in a true partnership
between home and school, we couldn’t do want we do without you!
We communicate frequently and in a variety of ways. Our

Who can be a WatchDog? WatchDOGS are fathers, grandfathers,
uncles, and other male father-figures.
What do WatchDOGS do? WatchDOGS volunteer 1 day a year at
Matzke and provide positive male role models for the students,
demonstrating by their presence that education is important.




¡La primera semana de clase fue
estupenda! La transición de los estudiantes
fue todo un éxito y todo surgió con
fluidez. Para los que son nuevos a Matzke,
mi nombre es Cathy Jacobs y soy la
directora. Me apasiona mi trabajo y es un
honor ser parte de la educación de sus
hijos. Yo crecí en este distrito y gradué de la
Secundaria Cypress Creek. Tengo tres hijos (1ro, 5to y 6to
grado) que asisten al distrito escolar Cypress Fairbanks. Mi
esposo es un bombero de Houston y nos deleita ser parte de
esta comunidad y de este maravilloso distrito escolar para
criar a nuestros hijos.
Nuestra meta es siempre mantenernos en comunicación con
todas nuestras familias. ¡La educación de sus hijos es un
convenio entre la vida de casa y de la escuela y necesitamos
todo su apoyo!

¿Quien puede participar? WATCH D.O.G.S. es un programa
innovador usado por las escuelas en todo el país que ayuda a los
papás y figuras paternas a tener un impacto positivo en la vida de
los estudiantes .
¿Que hace un papa WatchDOG? La meta es que estos papás
participen por lo menos un día al año en la escuela de su hijo como
voluntario creando así una imagen de modelo masculino positivo y
contribuyendo con un par adicional de ojos y oídos.
¡Acompáñenos para una noche de pizza y para aprender mas sobre el
programa WatchDOG !

FREE Pizza, Drinks and Fun!
Fathers and Father-figures,
On Tuesday, September 13, 2016 from 6:30 – 7:30pm we will be having our 3rd annual ‘Dads
and Kids’ Pizza Night at our school. You will meet here at the school cafeteria at 6:30pm for
FREE pizza and drinks. At 7:00pm we will have a presentation about our WATCH D.O.G.S.®
(Dads Of Great Students) Program. WATCH D.O.G.S.® is an innovative program being used
by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed
involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life. Our goal is to have you spend at
least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set
of eyes and ears.
Dads, granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers . . . this is your chance to have a night
out with your student in a fun atmosphere at school.
In order to participate, you need to do two things:
1. Fill out the bottom portion of this slip and return it with your student (ASAP) saying that you
will attend the pizza night so we’ll have an accurate head count for the food.
2. Mark your calendars, and we’ll see you Tuesday, September 13, 2016 from 6:30 – 7:30pm.

pizza para papás y sus hijos en nuestra escuela. La reunión será en la cafetería a las

Credit By Exam for 2016-2017
Students in grades k-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit
by exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will have only one opportunity to
test for each grade level considered.
To apply to take the test to skip Kindergarten, a student must be 5 by September 1, and
registered in a CFISD school. To apply to take the test to skip Grade 1, a student must be
6 by September 1, and enrolled in a CFISD school.
Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will
qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No
retests will be given.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact
Matzke counselor Heidi Rothschild at 281-897-3815. Applications for the upcoming
September testing opportunity must be received no later than Tuesday, August 30.
CRÉDITO POR EXAMEN 2016-2017
Los estudiantes de Kindergarten a 5to grado que tengan alto rendimiento y capacidad
tienen la oportunidad de usar el sistema “crédito por examen” para adelantarse un
grado. Para rendirlas pruebas y saltearse Kindergarten el alumno debe haber cumplido 5
años al 1ro de septiembre. Para rendir las pruebas y saltearse el 1er grado, el alumno
debe haber cumplido 6 años al 1ro de septiembre.
Los estudiantes que obtengan notas de 80 o más en cada sección de las pruebas del
sistema “crédito por examen” podrán ser adelantados en un grado. Sólo puede
“saltearse” un grado por año. Las pruebas no pueden rendirse por segunda vez.

August 2016
Book Fairs
The library will have two Book Fairs: November 14th – 19th & May 1st – 5th. This year we will
only take cash or credit cards. WE WILL NOT BE TAKING CHECKS at the book fairs. Matzke
will be using Scholastic Book Fair Company for our book fairs. Our “Family Night” in November
will be Tuesday, November 15th from 4-8 PM. Shop during KISS Days, Wednesday,
November 16th & Thursday, November 17th. Thank you so much for your support of the
book fairs; all monies earned will go for new books, student incentives and author/storyteller
visits.
Author Storyteller Visits
Author, Jeff Mack will visit with our 1st, 2nd & 3rd Graders on Monday, October 3rd. Storyteller,
Margaret Clauder, “Book Worm” will visit with Kindergarten on Thursday, November 10th.
Author Phil Bildner will visit 4th Grade Tuesday, November 15th and will be conducting a
Writing Workshop with our students. Author, Barbara O’Connor will be visiting 5th grade on
Monday, January 23rd. We learn so much from each author/storyteller visit. For our author
visits students will have the opportunity to purchase books to be signed by the authors coming to
Matzke this year. Information will be sent home before the author visit.
Name That Book Contest
This year Matzke Elementary 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade students will be
participating in the district Name That Book Contest. One hundred
books have been chosen by the librarian’s across the district for the
students to read. During October students will form groups of 6 to
compete against each other. There will be an individual grade-level
competition on Thursday, January 12th (clues will be asked about
the 100 books they have read). On Thursday, February 9th there
will be a competition between the winners of each grade level contest.
The winner of the February 9th Grade Level competition will
represent Matzke at the regional/district meet which will be held
Monday, February 27th from 5:00-7:00 PM! At 5:00 PM the
Regional Name That Book Contest will be held between the 45 district
elementary teams. At 6:00 PM the winners of the Regional contest
will compete in the District competition. Our students are getting very
excited! Right now they just need to be reading the 100 books on
the Name That Book List. READ! READ! READ!
Overdue Library Books
Parents if you come across any Matzke Elementary School Library Books from the previous
school year please have your student return them to the library as soon as possible! We are trying
to recover as many lost books as possible! Thank you for helping in this matter!
Mobile Library
Parents, Matzke Elementary students have the opportunity to visit the CFISD Mobile Library
during the next three months. The Mobile Library is a library on wheels that serves CFISD
students. Your children may check out 3 books, get 2 free books, and have a snack. The Mobile
Library will be located at Telge Park, 12400 Pleasant Grove Road, cypress, Texas. The schedule
will be out soon.

La Feria de Libros
Tendremos dos fechas para La Feria de Libros: 14 – 19 de noviembre y 1-5 de mayo. NO SE
ACEPTARAN CHEQUES PERSONALES, solo efectivo o tarjeta de crédito. La noche familiar será
el martes 15 de noviembre de 4-8 PM. Al igual que tendrán la oportunidad de hacer compras
el miércoles 16 de noviembre y jueves 17 de noviembre durante el almuerzo K.I.S.S. Esta
recaudación de fondos para la biblioteca ayuda a proveer fondos para comprar libros nuevos,
pagar las visitas de autores, premios incentivos para la lectura y otras actividades especiales para
la biblioteca.
Visitas de Autores
El autor, Jeff Mack visitara a los estudiantes de 1ro, 2do y 3er grado el lunes 3 de octubre. La
narradora, Margaret Clauder, “Book Worm” visitara a los estudiantes de Kindergarten el
jueves 10 de noviembre. El autor Phil Bildner visitara a los estudiantes de 4to grado el
martes 15 de noviembre y conducirá un taller de escritura. La autora, Barbara O’Connor

Concurso de nombrar el título de un libro
¡Es tiempo de lectura! Los estudiantes de 3ro, 4to y 5to grado estarán
participando en el concurso de nombrar el título de un libro. La
misión del concurso es despertar la pasión de la lectura. La lista de los
libros ya se les proveo a los estudiantes y se les anima a leer todos los
libros. Este programa culmina anualmente con una serie de concursos
para celebrar el conocimiento y comprensión de los libros leídos. Los
100 libros que fueron escogidos por los bibliotecarios de CFISD están
disponibles en nuestra biblioteca. El concurso por grado sera el
jueves 12 de enero (se les harán preguntas sobre los 100 libros que
habrán leído). El jueves 9 de febrero habrá el concurso entre los
ganadores de cada grado. Los ganadores del 9 de febrero de cada
grado representara a Matzke en el concurso del distrito cual se llevara
acabo el lunes 27 de febrero de 5:00-7:00 PM. A las 5:00 PM el
concurso de nombrar el título de un libro a nivel regional se llevara a
cabo entre los equipos de 45 escuelas primarias del distrito. A las
6:00 PM los ganadores del concurso regional competirán en el
concurso a nivel distrito.
Libros extraviados de años anteriores:
Les pedimos que se mantengan alertos a cualquier libro de la biblioteca de Matzke que se
encuentren por su casa. Estamos intentando recuperar libros extraviados de años anteriores. Entre
más libros extraviados recuperemos, menos fondos serán necesarios para remplazarlos.
Biblioteca Móvil de CFISD
Los estudiantes de Matzke tienen la oportunidad de visitar la biblioteca móvil de CFISD en los
próximos tres meses. La biblioteca móvil es una biblioteca en ruedas que sirve a los estudiantes
de nuestro distrito escolar Cypress-Fairbanks. Sus hijos tendrán la oportunidad de llevarse 3 libros
a casa, recibir 2 gratuitos y comer un bocadillo. La biblioteca móvil estará ubicada en el Parque

Curriculum Night
Session 1: 6:00-6:45pm
Session 2: 7:00-7:45pm
The teachers will be presenting the same information at two
different sessions on this evening. This will allow us to
accommodate parents who have more than one child. You may
attend either session.
We will provide childcare for any families needing that service
for children up to age 11 so that parents may attend the
meeting free of distractions or interruptions. If your family
will need childcare, please fill out the form below and return
to school. This will help us prepare materials and have
adequate number of staff on hand for childcare.

Las maestras harán la misma presentación en ambas sesiones.
Esto beneficiara a los padres que tienen más de un hijo en
Matzke, y podrán asistir a cualquier sesión.
Tendremos cuidado para los niños (hasta la edad de 11 años)
para las familias que requieran de este servicio, esto les dará a
los padres el tiempo necesario para escuchar a la maestra sin
interrupciones. Si necesita del cuidado de sus hijos, llene el
formulario y regréselo a la escuela. Esto nos ayudara a
prepararnos con los materiales y el personal adecuado.
