Around the world, vaccines have saved the lives of millions of children over the past few decades.
Yet, every year, 1.4 million children still die needlessly of vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles,
whooping cough and neonatal tetanus.
A new UNICEF report shows that while significant advances have been made in expanding global
immunization coverage, too many children are not being reached by routine immunization. They are invariably
the poorest and most vulnerable.

“They live to far away form any immunization sides, they cannot access to the immunization services and they
cannot access to immunization services because there are minority groups living in remote areas with very
limited road infrastructure and in areas where you have very limited else infrastructure and very often to reach
those populations you need mobility which this countries cannot afford, cannot maintain.”
There is some good news.
Deaths from measles –one of the biggest killers of children worldwide– have plummeted to about half the
levels they were in 1999.
Today, most of the world is polio free.
And neonatal tetanus –a disease that kills thousands of newborns due to lack of hygiene during or after birth–
has been eliminated in nearly two-thirds of developing countries.
But there are new challenges ahead.
The cost of immunization in developing countries is expected to triple over the next decade with the
introduction of new, more expensive vaccines.
To help poor countries expand their immunization programmes, the World Health Organization and UNICEF
launched a new global strategy in 2005. The goal is to protect more people

En todo el mundo las vacunas han salvado las vidas de millones de niños y niñas en las últimas
décadas.
Sin embargo, todavía mueren innecesariamente todos los anos 1.4 millones de niños y niñas a causa
de enfermedades que se podrían evitar con una vacuna, como el sarampión, la tos ferina y el tétanos
neonatal.
Un nuevo informe de UNICEF revela que, a pesar de los avances importantes que se han logrado para
ampliar la cobertura mundial de inmunización, todavía hay muchos niños que siguen sin vacunar, y
siempre son los más pobres y los más vulnerables.

‘‘Viven muy lejos de los lugares de inmunización, no tienen acceso a estos servicios porque viven en
zonas remotas en donde hay muy pocas carreteras y donde la infraestructura de salud es muy limitada.
A menudo para llegar a estas poblaciones se necesitan equipos móviles que estos países no pueden
adquirir ni mantener’’.
Pero hay algunas buenas noticias.
Las muertes debidas al sarampión, una de las enfermedades que mas niños y niñas mata en el mundo,
ha descendido la mitad con respecto a los niveles de 1999.
Hoy en día la mayor parte del mundo se ha liberado de la poliomielitis.
Y el tétanos neonatal, una enfermedad que cuesta la vida de miles de recién nacidos, ha sido eliminado
en dos terceras partes del mundo en desarrollo.
Pero todavía quedan nuevos problemas por resolver.
Se espera que el costo de la inmunización en los países en desarrollo se triplique durante la próxima
década con la incorporación de nuevas y más caras vacunas.
Para ayudar a los países de menores recursos a ampliar sus programas de inmunización la
Organización Mundial de la Salud y UNICEF presentaron una nueva estrategia en el 2005. El objetivo es
proteger a más personas contra más enfermedades, especialmente los niños y niñas cuyo acceso
resulta más difícil.
Los beneficios de esta inversión no tienen precio. La estrategia podría evitar millones de muertes
infantiles todos los anos.
