El comandante Nicolás Bayona, que en 1888
había sido ascendido a capitán de navío,
comanda la unidad hasta 1895, destituido
por el advenimiento de la Revolución Liberal,
siendo reemplazado en el cargo por el capitán
de fragata Benigno S. Calderón, ascendido a
capitán de navío el 10 de noviembre de 1895,
desempeñándose como tal hasta el año 1900
en que es sustituido por el capitán de fragata
James Power. Desde el 1 de diciembre de 1901
ocupa aquel comando el también capitán de
fragata Marcos A. Calderón, hasta el año de
1905, en que retorna al mando el capitán de
navío James Power.
Commander Nicolas Bayona had been
promoted as Captain in 1888, and was in
charge of the unit until 1895. Commander
Nicolas Bayona was dismissed due to
the Liberal Revolution and was replaced
by Commander Benigno S. Calderon
who was promoted as Captain on 10
November, 1895 and worked until 1900.
Commander Benigno S. Calderon was
replaced by Commander James Power.
From 1 December 1901 its Commander
was Marcos A. Calderon, until 1905 when
Captain James Power returned to be in
charge of the ship.
Participa en la revolución de Esmeraldas
(1913-1916) al mando del capitán de navío
Rafael Andrade Lalama, oficial que dirigió
la unidad desde 1912 hasta su retiro el
7 de julio de 1925. En 1924 se decretó el
restablecimiento de la Escuela Naval a bordo
del crucero “Cotopaxi”, y el 2 de mayo
entraría el joven Rafael Morán Valverde,
quien años después comandaría el cañonero
cuando el 25 de julio de 1941 se enfrentó al
destructor peruano “Almirante Villar” en
aguas de Jambelí, saliendo victorioso.
The Ship participated in the Revolution of
Esmeraldas (1913-1916) under orders of Captain
Rafael Andrade Lalama, officer who commanded the
Unit from 1912 until his retirement on 17 July, 1925.
In 1924 the re-establishment of the Naval Academy
aboard the Cruiser “Cotopaxi” was decreed. On 2
May that year, the young Rafael Moran Valverde
joined the academy. Years latter, on 25 July, 1941
he would be in charge of the gunship when it fought
against the Peruvian destroyer “Almirante Villar”
in waters of the Jambeli archipielago. Rafael Moran
Valverde defeated the enemy.
