Dear Holy Spirit Families,
Teachers use assessments in two distinct ways. One type of
assessment is called a formative assessment. By doing a formative
assessment, the teacher is assessing what a student does know and
what skills need to be reviewed or re-taught to the class. Once the
teacher gives a formative assessment, she reviews the results for the
areas of need. The courses of study are then adjusted to emphasize the
skills that are lacking or need to be strengthened. The second type of
assessment is summative. An example of a summative assessment
would be a chapter test, mid-term, or final exam. Please keep in mind
that our progress reports reflect progress over time.
We use a standards-based progress report. Each subject area is
broken down into benchmarks or skills that students need to master at
their grade level. Having the ability to look at specific skills, allows the
teacher to diagnose where a student is having problems. With this
knowledge as a base, the teacher can select various teaching strategies
to aid the student in their learning process. Interims will be sent home for
all students on Friday, September 23rd. If you have any questions or
concerns in regards to your student’s progress, please call the school
office and set up an appointment with the teacher. We ask that you sign
and return the interim report envelope, but keep the actual interim report.

Los maestros utilizan las evaluaciones de dos
maneras distintas. Un tipo de evaluación se llama evaluación
formativa. Al hacer una evaluación formativa, el maestro está
evaluando lo que un estudiante sabe y necesita ser revisado
o re-enseñado a la clase qué habilidades. Una vez que el
profesor da una evaluación formativa, que se revisan los
resultados de las áreas de necesidad. Los cursos de estudio
se ajustan posteriormente para destacar las habilidades que
faltan o necesita ser reforzado. El segundo tipo de
evaluación es sumativa. Un ejemplo de una evaluación
sumativa sería una prueba de capítulo, a medio plazo, o
examen final. Por favor, tenga en cuenta que nuestros
informes de progreso reflejan el progreso a través del tiempo.
Utilizamos un informe de progreso basado en
estándares. Cada materia se divide en puntos de referencia
o habilidades que los estudiantes necesitan para dominar a
