¿Qué te inspiró a escoger tu carrera?
What inspired you to choose your career?
Mi carrera universitaria la hice en Caracas, en la Universidad
Simón Bolívar, que no es la universidad que fundó Hugo Chávez
sino una universidad fundada en el 1969. Es una de las mejores
universidades de Caracas, muy bien “ranqueada”, con bastante
éxito en cuanto a la cantidad de estudiantes que se graduaban,
muy selectiva, solo entraban mil cien estudiantes por año.
I began my college career in Caracas, at the Simón Bolívar
University, which is not the university that was funded by
Hugo Chávez but a university founded in 1969. It is one of the
best universities in Caracas, very well ranked, and extremely
successful in terms of the number of students that graduated,
it was very selective, only a hundred thousand students entered
per year.
Estudié química en la Universidad Simón Bolívar, una
licenciatura en química, en la especialización de tecnología,
es decir, ciencia aplicada. En realidad yo quería estudiar
medicina pero cuando me gradué de bachiller en Caracas,
la universidad que ofrecía los estudios de medicina era la
Universidad Central de Venezuela y en aquel momento estaba
cerrada, había sido intervenida por situaciones políticas,
obviamente. Había dos cortes de estudiantes que estaban
represadas y no habían ingresado a la universidad. Entonces
era prácticamente imposible, era un sueño irrealizable
poder aspirar a entrar en la Universidad Central de Venezuela.
Además, mi mamá siempre se opuso a todas esas demostraciones
y participaciones estudiantiles, por miedo más que otra cosa.
Irme a estudiar fuera de Caracas era también imposible porque
mi mamá no lo habría permitido. Así que tuve que buscar una
solución intermedia, por lo cual escogí la carrera de química,
que era lo más similar en cuanto al área de la ciencia, que era
lo que me gustaba. Al principio tuve muchas dificultades, quizás
porque no tenía un buen método de estudios y porque no era
lo que quería estudiar. Sin embargo llegó el momento en el que
conocí al que hoy es mi esposo y prácticamente trazamos un
plan porque él es muy planificado y organizado, yo no lo soy.
Eso me ayudó a enfocarme un poco más. Ya teniendo un plan
por delante organicé mi vida, empecé a dar mejor rendimiento
y terminé con éxito en mi carrera. Me gradué y me quedé
trabajando en la universidad por diez años.
I studied chemistry at the Simón Bolívar University, where
I specialized in technology, in other words, in applied science.
As a matter of fact, I really wanted to study medicine but
when I graduated from high school in Caracas, the university
that offered medicine studies was the Central University of
Venezuela and, at that time, it was closed. It had been taken
over because of political situations obviously. There were two
factions of students, who had taken over and had not been
accepted by the university. Going to the Central University of
Venezuela was an impossible dream. Also, my mom always
objected to all of these demonstrations and students take overs,
for fear more than anything else.
Also, going away from home, to study outside Caracas was
impossible, because my mom would not have allowed it.
Therefore, I had to find an intermediate solution, that’s why
I chose to study chemistry, which was the most similar to the
area of science that I liked. At first I had a lot of difficulties,
maybe because I didn’t have a good method of study and
because chemistry wasn’t what I wanted to study. However,
when I met the man who is now my husband we decided on a
plan for our future since he is very organized and I’m not. This
helped me focus a little bit more. After determining my plan,
I organized my life, I began to work better, to give better results,
and successfully finished my career. I graduated and stayed
working at the same university for ten years.
