GPA
What is a GPA and why is it so important?
The GPA or Grade Point Average, is an average of all of your grades. It is calculated by taking the number
of grade points a student earned in a given period of time divided by the total number of classes .
GPA’s play a role when it comes to:
Playing on a sport
Getting a work permit
Getting accepted to various Universities
Job opportunities
How to calculate a GPA
Point System:
*WEIGHTED COURSES (AP classes and Honors Physics) get extra point (C’s or better)
A=4 points
*A=5 points
B=3 points
*B=4 points
C=2 points
*C=3 points
D=1 point
D=1 point
F=0 points
F=0 points

To determine GPA, turn all your grades into points; add them up then divide the number by the
total number of classes you have taken.
There are different types of GPA’s that include different thinks for different purposes. For example, your
transcript alone includes many different types of GPA’s.
College GPA (Weighted 10-12 GPA): GPA that is used to determine if you are accepted to a 4 year University

GPA ONLY includes CP classes in the 10 th -12 th grades (classes that have a P in front of them on
your transcript).

Includes *weighted* scores.
CAL GRANT GPA: GPA that determines if you are eligible for financial aid from the state of California.

GPA ONLY includes CP classes from in the 10 th -12 th grades (classes that have a P in front of them
on your transcript).

Does NOT include *weighted* scores meaning the highest possible Cal Grant GPA is a 4.0
regardless of taking AP courses.
Weighted 9-12 GPA:GPA used to determine class rank, Valedictorian and Salutatorian status.

GPA that includes ALL coursework taken 9 th -12 th grades.

Includes *weighted* scores.
Q:“What GPA do I need to get into _________________ University?”
A: All CSU’s require a minimum 2.0 and UC’s a minimum 3.0 but acceptance is more complicated. D epending
on the competiveness of the school will determine the GPA you need (combined with your SAT score).
For example: the average GPA needed to get into Stanislaus will be much lower than a GPA needed to

¿Qué es un GPA y por qué es tan importante? El GPA o promedio de calificaciones, es un promedio de todas las
calificaciones. Se calcula tomando el número de puntos de calificación que un estudiante ha obtenido en un
período determinado de tiempo, dividido por el número total de clases.
GPA juega un papel a la hora de:
Jugar en un deporte
Obtener un permiso de trabajo
Ser aceptado a varias Universidades
Oportunidades de Trabajo
Como calcular un GPA
Sistema de Puntos: *WEIGHTED Courses (clases AP y Física de Honores) obtienen un extra punto (C’s o mejor)
A=4 puntos

promedio el GPA necesario para entrar en Stanislaus será mucho más bajo que un GPA necesario para
