A Spoon for Every Bite
We will now be reading “A Spoon for Every Bite,” a folktale about a poor couple
who invites a rich man to supper. When the rich man learns that they only have one
spoon each, he boasts that he has so may spoons that he could use a different spoon
every day. The wife calmly tells him that she knows of a person who uses a different
spoon for every bite. The rich man gets angry and, to prove his lavishness, starts
eating every bite with a different spoon. He gives away the used spoons to the poor
couple, who sells the spoons to make money. The rich man ends up spending all of his
wealth.
In the story, the rich man becomes penniless because of wasteful spending. After
your child has finished reading “A Spoon for Every Bite,” you may want to help him or
her write down ways your family could cut down on monthly expenses by spending
money more carefully. An example has been completed for you.

A Spoon for Every Bite
Ahora vamos a leer “A Spoon for Every Bite”, un cuento tradicional sobre una
pareja pobre que invita a un hombre rico a cenar. Cuando se entera de que tienen una
cuchara para cada uno, el hombre rico hace alarde de que él tiene tantas cucharas que
podría usar una distinta cada día. Con calma, la esposa le dice que ella conoce a una
persona que usa una cuchara diferente para cada bocado. El hombre rico se molesta
y, para demostrar su abundancia, comienza a tomar cada bocado con una cuchara
diferente. Da las cucharas usadas a la pareja pobre, la cual las vende para hacer
dinero. El hombre rico acaba gastando toda su fortuna.
En el cuento, el hombre rico queda sin un centavo por causa de su derroche.
Cuando su hijo(a) haya terminado de leer “A Spoon for Every Bite”, usted quizás
quiera ayudarlo(a) a escribir formas en que su familia podría ahorrar gastos utilizando
el dinero con más cuidado. A continuación se le da un ejemplo.
