La oración – The sentence To make a sentence in Spanish (as in any language) you will need several words in a specific order. The parts of a sentence are: article, noun, adjective, verb. The noun or subject (sustantivo) can be considered the main character of our sentence, and is the person, the animal, the thing, the place or the idea that we are talking about. For example: She speaks Ella habla The articles (artículos) are the words that give us number, gender and tell us whether or not we’re talking about a specific or an inspecific noun. The tree El árbol A tree Un árbol A verb (verbo) is the part of the sentence that tells you what the subject or noun is doing. She speaks Ella habla A verb is divided in two parts Stem and Ending. Habl ar Ending Stem The stem doesn’t change but the ending does, to match the personal pronoun. A personal pronoun is the word that takes the place of a noun when we are not naming it. Noun Ana speaks Español Yo Tú Él Ella Usted Nosotros / Nosotras Vosotros / Vosotras Ustedes Ellos / Ellas Personal pronoun She speaks Inglés I You He She You (formal) We You – all (Spain) You – all (Latinoamerica) They Verbs. There are three types of verbs; you can distinguish them by looking at their endings: -ar -er -ir For example: trabajar (to work), comer (to eat) and vivir (to live) To conjugate a verb (to match noun and verb) you drop the endings –ar –er –ir (eg. trabaj-, com-, viv-) and you attach the necessary ending to the stem, depending on the personal pronoun you want to use (see table). For example: Yo trabajo (I work). The only example of this in English is when we add an s to the third person (I work, you work, she works, we work, they work).
