Vicente Sanchís Olmos nació en Valencia y estudió en su ciudad hasta el
final de la licenciatura en medicina. Estuvo en Bolonia junto a Vittorio Putti
durante dos años. En 1939 dirige el Servicio de Traumatología y Cirugía
Ortopédica de la Cruz Roja de Valencia. En 1944 funda la revista Cirugía del
Aparato Locomotor y en 1947 participa en la reorganización de la SECOT que
la guerra había anulado. En 1940 gana la plaza de Profesor-Jefe del Servicio
de Traumatología, Ortopedia y Rehabilitación del Hospital Provincial de
Madrid.
Durante sus once años de vida en Valencia publicó varios libros: Pie
Poliomielítico, Manual de Ortopedia Infantil, Tuberculosis de la Cadera y
Tuberculosis del Esqueleto (inglés).
Vicente Sanchís Olmos was born in Valencia and studied in his native city
until he graduated before joining Vittorio Putti in Bologna for two years. In
1939 he directed the Red Cross Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery
Department in Valencia. In 1944, he founded the review Cirugía del
Aparato Locomotor and in 1947 participated in the reorganization of
SECOT, suspended by the war. En 1940 he won the post of Head
Professor of the Traumatology, Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation
Department of the Provincial Hospital of Madrid.
During his eleven years in Valencia he published various books:
Poliomyelitic Foot, Manual for Childhood Orthopaedics, Tuberculosis of the
Hip, and Tuberculosis of the Skeleton (in English).

En la postguerra española nuestra especialidad dejó de existir como Cátedra
especializada, como había logrado Trías Pujol en Barcelona. Sanchís Olmos
retomó esta iniciativa en el Hospital Provincial de Madrid y al año de obtener
la plaza empezó a ejercer de Profesor de COT de forma programada.
Organizó su enseñanza con inscripción y asistencia obligatoria: 6 lecciones
teóricas y 6 lecciones prácticas a cargo de él, más 40 horas de trabajos
prácticos a cargo de sus ayudantes. Al año siguiente el curso duró doce
meses. Además invitó a los mejores profesores de aquel momento: Law
(Londres), Merle d’Aubigné (París), Zanoli (Bolonia), Mandruzzato (Brescia),
Rocher (Burdeos), Max Lange (Múnich), Kallio (Helsinki), Crawford Adams
(Londres), Gruca (Varsovia), Iselin (París), Francillon (Zúrich), J. Judet (París),
Tubiana (París), Otto Russe (Viena) Ramadier (París), Delitala (Bolonia).
During the Spanish postwar period our speciality ceased to exist as a
specialised Chair, as Trías Pujol had achieved in Barcelona. Sanchís
Olmos took up this initiative anew in the Provincial Hospital of Madrid and
a year after obtaining the job began to work as Orthpaedic Surgery and
Traumatology Professor in a programmed manner. He organised his
teaching with compulsory inscription and attendance: 6 theoretical
lessons and 6 practical lessons given by himself, plus 40 hours of
practical work under the supervision of his assistants. The following year
the course lasted 12 months. He also invited the leading professors of
the moment: Law (London), Merle d’Aubigné (Paris), Zanoli (Bologna),
Mandruzzato (Brescia), Rocher (Bourdeaux), Max Lange (Munich), Kallio
(Helsinki), Crawford Adams (London), Gruca (Warsaw), Iselin (Paris),
Francillon (Zurich), J. Judet (Paris), Tubiana (Paris), Otto Russe (Vienna)
Ramadier (Paris), Delitala (Bologna).

Durante su vida en el Hospital Provincial de Madrid siguió publicando,
además de la labor docente que era única en la ortopedia española de los
años cincuenta. Creo monografías propias de su Servicio.
During his life in the Provincial Hospital of Madrid, Sanchís Olmos
continued publishing and teaching, the only Spanish orthopaedic activity
of the 1950s, while writing monographic treatises on his department’s
work.
Sanchís Olmos murió joven en 1963 y los amigos y alumnos le dedicaron un
Libro-Homenaje con cincuenta trabajos escritos con tal motivo. Sus amigos
europeos que él había invitado no faltaron a esta cita: Bertrand, Borja Araujo,
Calandriello, Ehalt, Ferreira Alves, Francillon, Goidanich, Iselin, Robert y Jean
Judet, Law, Lelièvre, Mandruzzato, Mastrogostino, Merle d’Aubigné,
Monticelli, Nicod, Ramadier, Rompoldi, Russo, Turbiana, Witt, Zanoli.
Podemos decir que la ortopedia europea se volcó en este homenaje y
debemos reconocerle el gran esfuerzo que hizo para que ésta llegara a
nosotros. Los alumnos colocaron una placa recordatoria en
«su Aula».
Sanchís Olmos died young in 1963 and his friends and students
dedicated a Memorial Book to him containing fifty articles on
orthopaedics. The European friends he had invited were present at his
homage: Bertrand, Borja Araujo, Calandriello, Ehalt, Ferreira Alves,
Francillon, Goidanich, Iselin, Robert and Jean Judet, Law, Lelièvre,
Mandruzzato, Mastrogostino, Merle d’Aubigné, Monticelli, Nicod,
Ramadier, Rompoldi, Russo, Turbiana, Witt, and Zanoli. We can affirm that
European orthopaedics participated en bloc in this tribute and we must
recognise the great effort he made to make this speciality available to us.
His students placed a commemorative plaque in «his classroom».

Francisco Vaquero González fue el sucesor de Sanchís Olmos y siguió la
misma línea de su maestro, organizando los Cursos de Especialización
desde 1954 hasta 1984, año en el que se cerró la escuela, después de
XXXIII Cursos de Especialización y de trabajo sustitutivo. En aquel momento
ya existían muchos Servicios de COT españoles con Docencia programada de
5 años de duración.
En esta etapa de Vaquero González siguieron llegando profesores europeos
invitados: Rampoldi, Gandolfi, Müller, Ramadier, Merle d’Aubigné, Vainio,
Bousquet, Dejour, Trillat, Bari, Kotz, Bettini, Lord, Willenegger, Jensen,
Theodores, Weyer.

Francisco Vaquero González (1924-1999).
La labor docente y de conexión europea desarrollada en el Servicio de COT
del Hospital Provincial de Madrid ha ayudado a la especialización de muchos
cirujanos ortopédicos, en época de carencia de la cirugía ortopédica y
traumatología en las universidades.
Francisco Vaquero González succeeded Sanchís Olmos and followed the
same policy as his teacher, organising Specialisation Courses from 1954
until 1984, when the school was closed, after 33 Specialisation Courses
and substitutive work. At that time there were many Spanish Orthopaedic
Surgery and Traumatology Departments with 5-year teaching
programmes.
During the Vaquero González years, European guest professors continued
to appear : Rampoldi, Gandolfi, Müller, Ramadier, Merle d’Aubigné, Vainio,
Bousquet, Dejour, Trillat, Bari, Kotz, Bettini, Lord, Willenegger, Jensen,
Theodores, Weyer.

The teaching and European liaison work carried out by the Provincial
Hospital of Madrid Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Department
helped the specialisation of many orthopaedic surgeons at a time when
there was a lack of orthopaedic surgery and traumatology in the
universities.
