Course Goals
There are various objectives of Spanish 212. The first is to build on existing reading, writing, listening, and
speaking skills in Spanish. Communicative goals are placed at the forefront with a focus on various core
communicative functions along with the grammatical structures that support them. These structures are
recycled throughout the course to reflect the real-life use of language. These include, but are not limited to,
the following:
§ describing characteristics, qualities, & perceptions of people, places, and things
§ making comparisons and expressing likes and dislikes
§ talking about and narrating past, present, and future events
§ hypothesizing about life experiences
§ reacting to experiences and recommending solutions to situations
A second goal is to develop a basic knowledge of cultural differences between the U.S. and the Spanishspeaking world. Some examples are:
§ historical events, festivities and artists in the Spanish-speaking world
§ geography and culture of Spain, the Caribbean, Mexico, & Central America, the Andean region,
and the southern Cone
§ differences in social expectations and cultural values
§ unique cultural perspectives from the Spanish-speaking world
