Parental Participation Policy
Parents of Title I Participants in West Des Moines Community Schools have multiple
opportunities to participate in the Title I program at numerous levels. Recognizing the
parental involvement is the key to academic achievement, we seek to involve parents in
an effective home-school partnership that will provide the best possible education for our
students. The Title I Annual Parent meeting provides supports necessary to aide in the
planning and implementations of parent involvement activities. The district encourages
parent involvement and supports parent involvement and supports this partnership
through providing information about standards and assessments; providing training and
materials for parents to help their children; educating school personnel about involving
parents and the value of parent contributions.
1. This written policy is distributed to families of participating Title I children and
all parents in Title I buildings at our annual Title I meeting.
2. Annually, individual buildings hold Title I parent meetings in the fall to share
information, answer questions, and seek input for improvement regarding the
Title I program in their individual schools. These meetings are typically held in
the fall in conjunction with each school’s “Meet the Teacher Night”, or “Open
House”, so that the Title I program is integrated and not separated from the school
as a whole.
3. Every year, parents are provided with an informational brochure that describes the
Title I program and also lists the qualifications of the Title I staff. Parents are
also provided with contact information so that they can address additional
questions to the appropriate staff.
4. Families are given assistance in understanding the Title I requirements, standards,
and assessments at the annual parent meeting. During parent-teacher conferences,
families receive an explanation of their student’s progress given through
individual reports and pupil progress reports.
5. In targeted assistance buildings, parents are informed via letter of their child’s
participation in the Title I program. They also are informed about the curriculum,
instructional objectives, and methods used in the program. This information is
delivered through student update letters, newsletters, emails, phone calls and at
parent-teacher conferences.
6. Parent recommendations are encouraged and responded to in a timely manner.
Verbal and written responses will be given for all recommendations.
7. Each Title I School in West Des Moines also sends home and encourages parents
to sign a “Parent-School-Learner Compact”. This document reinforces important
principles for the involvement of parents, students, and teachers in the educational
development of all children. We also provide this compact in Spanish, Hakha
Chin and Vietnamese.
8. The Title I program provides opportunities for parents to become partners with
the school in promoting the education of their children both at home and at school.
Parents are invited to attend schoolwide annual events, such as Math and Literacy
nights and Open Houses. These evenings are designed to provide parents with
reading and math strategies which can be used at home to assist their child’s
educational development. The school provides reasonable support for parental
involvement activities as requested by parents.
9. Each year, we also solicit feedback from the parents of students who are served in
the Title I program. Parents are asked to rate and provide written comments on
how well the program has benefited their child, the degree to which they feel their
child has made academic progress and how well-informed they have been on Title
I activities and progress. Parents are also encouraged to provide any suggestions
they might have regarding how the Title I program could be improved. This
survey is also translated into multiple languages.
Providing all West Des Moines Community School’s children with equal access to
quality education is of primary purpose. It is crucial that all partners (students, parents,
educators, and communities) have the opportunity to provide input and offer resources to
meet this purpose. As these partnerships are mutually beneficial, developing cooperative
efforts will ensure improved academic achievement for all students.

Padres de Estudiantes que Participan en Título I en el Distrito Escolar de la Comunidad
de West Des Moines tienen múltiples oportunidades para participar en el programa Título
I en varios niveles. Reconociendo que la participación de los padres es la clave para el
rendimiento académico, buscamos a envolver a los padres en una asociación efectiva
entre la escuela y el hogar que les proveerá la mejor educación posible a nuestros
estudiantes. La Reunión Anual para los Padres de Título I provee el apoyo necesario para
ayudar a planear e implementar actividades en las que los padres pueden participar. El
distrito anima la participación de los padres y apoya la participación de los padres y
apoya esta asociación proveyendo información sobre los estándares y evaluaciones;
proveyendo entrenamiento y materiales para que los padres ayuden a sus niños; educando
al personal de la escuela sobre la participación de los padres y el valor de las
contribuciones de los padres.

evaluaciones de Título I por medio de la reunión anual y las conferencias de
padres-maestros. Durante las conferencias de padres-maestros, las familias
reciben una explicación del progreso de sus niños por medio de informes
individuales e informes de progreso del estudiante.
5. En escuelas que se benefician de esta ayuda, los padres son informados vía carta
sobre la participación de sus niños en el programa Título I. Ellos también son
informados sobre el currículo, objetivos de enseñanza, y métodos usados en el
programa. Esta información es enviada por medio de boletines, emails, llamadas

participación de los padres, estudiantes, y maestros en el desarrollo educativo de

8. El programa Título I provee oportunidades para que los padres sean compañeros

han sido servidos por el programa Título I. Les pedimos a los padres que
califiquen y provean comentarios escritos sobre cuán bien el programa ha
beneficiado a sus niños, el grado de progreso que piensan que sus niños han hecho
académicamente y cuán bien informados han estado sobre las actividades de
Título I y el progreso. Los padres también son animados a proveer cualquier
sugerencia que tengan sobre cómo el programa Título I puede ser mejorado. Este
cuestionario también está traducido al español.
