Estimado Senador (nombre),
Hoy me dirijo directamente a usted con el objetivo de informarlo sobre la terrible
problemática que está afectando actualmente a todos los colombianos pues
confío en que su experiencia e influencia en el país puede ayudar a solucionarlo y
educar a las personas sobre este tema.
Hago referencia a las "micro-perlas"; estas son partículas de plástico más
pequeñas que granos de arena que se encuentran en productos de aseo
personal (especialmente) y que terminan en los océanos tras ser usadas. El
inmenso problema relacionado con estas partículas es el impacto tan
críticamente negativo que tienen en los eco-sistemas marinos, lagos, ríos, demás
cuerpos de agua y finalmente en la salud de los seres humanos. Las micro-perlas
constituyen el 92% de la contaminación plástica en el océano y en adición
atraen y absorben las sustancias químicas que se encuentran en el agua hasta tal
punto que pueden llegar a acumular más 1 millón de veces la toxicidad del agua
en el que se encuentran; además de ser imposibles de reciclar.
Es por su toxicidad y abundancia que es un problema tan preocupante, pues no
sólo la salud de los organismos acuáticos se ve extremadamente afectada sino
también la salud de los seres humanos se ve comprometida cuando se consumen
productos de mar (pescado, frutos de mar, algas, etc.) que han comido o se han
contaminado con estas micro-perlas como consecuencia de que este plástico no
puede ser digerido ni procesado por ellos; por tanto se quedan estancadas sus
organismos
Considero realmente preocupante que uno de los contaminantes más dañinos y
abundantes para el océano sea tan desconocido a pesar que está presente en
los productos con los que nos cepillamos los dientes y nos hidratamos el cuerpo
diariamente y que los consumidores de dichos productos no sean ni
medianamente conscientes sobre esta circunstancia.
En un país como el nuestro, tan rico en recursos naturales opino que es vital que
protejamos los océanos cristalinos y relativamente limpios que poseemos, tanto
como la salud de los colombianos y su derecho a saber acerca de los
componentes que se encuentran en los productos que usan cada día y sus
efectos en su salud y en el medio ambiente.
Es increíble que tan solo un producto puede contener más de 300,000 microperlas y que no haya ningún tipo de información disponible en la etiqueta del
producto acerca de esto. Sin embargo no es sólo increíble la falta de
responsabilidad y transparencia que tienen las empresas que trabajan con microperlas sino que también lo es el hecho de que en nuestro país no hayan
organismos que regulen ni que verifiquen lo que se encuentra en nuestro
productos de aseo domestico ni personal; que aunque no lo creamos son los que
más químicos tóxicos y dañinos para la salud y el medio ambiente contienen. ¿No
es acaso inconcebible que estemos usando y consumiendo estos productos que
contienen micro-perlas en el día a día y que una MÍNIMA fracción de la
población conozca sobre su existencia y sobre sus efectos reales en el planeta y
en nuestros propios organismos?
Lo invito hoy a que reflexione sobre este asunto, sobre su gravedad y sobre la
importancia de proteger la salud de los ciudadanos y del territorio natural
nacional. Sé que políticamente hay asuntos que al parecer son de mayor
"prioridad" pero en este caso no creo que haya prioridad más grande que la
salud de la población colombiana y la importancia de defender nuestros
derechos como consumidores. Le aseguro que los colombianos valorarían su
esfuerzo por cuidar su salud y la del planeta mediante la prohibición de las micro-
perlas en el país o al menos mediante la creación de un organismo de control
que se asegure de revisar y comprobar que los productos que usamos para
limpiar nuestros hogares y nuestros cuerpos sean realmente seguros para nuestra
salud y la salud del medio ambiente.
Quisiera además mencionarle que 18 estados de EEUU, Canadá, Australia y
numerosos países europeos están trabajando intensamente con el fin de prohibir
las micro-perlas para el beneficio de sus ciudadanos y de los eco-sistemas que
estás partículas afectan. Sería un gigantesco paso para Colombia el tomar
ejemplo de estas naciones para mostrarle al mundo que se preocupa por el
medio ambiente y por sus valiosos recursos naturales y así bienestar de sus
habitantes.

Dear Senator (name),
Today I speak directly to you in order to inform you about the terrible problematic
that’s currently affecting all Colombians; including you. I am confident that your
experience and influence in the country can help solve it and educate people
about the topic.
I refer to "microbeads"; these are particles smaller than grains of sand found in
personal care products (especially) and that end in the ocean after the products
that contain it are used. The huge problem associated with these particles is the
critically negative impact on marine eco-systems, lakes, rivers, other water bodies
and ultimately on the health of humans. Micro-beads constitute 92% of plastic
pollution in the ocean and in addition they attract and absorb the chemicals in
the water to the point that may accumulate over 1 million times the toxicity of the
water in which they are found; besides being impossible to recycle.
It is because of their toxicity and abundance that is such worrying matter, since
not only the health of aquatic organisms is extremely affected but also the health
of humans is compromised when sea products (fish, seafood, algae, etc.) are
consumed. This occurs because the organisms that have eaten or have been
polluted with these micro-beads -due to their plastic components- cannot digest
or process them; therefore the micro-beads remain in their bodies and are
transferred to us when they are consumed.
I consider very worrying that one of the most damaging and abundant pollutants
to the ocean is so unknown despite being present in the products that we brush
our teeth with and moisturize the bodies with daily. It is unconceivable that
consumers of these products are not even fairly aware about this circumstance.
In a country like ours, so rich in natural resources I think it is vital that we protect the
clear and relatively clean oceans that we have. But equally as important to
protect the health of the citizens and their right to know about the components
found in products they use every day (their impact on their health and on the
environment).
It's unbelievable that just one product contain more than 300,000 micro-beads
and that no type of information available on the product label about this.
However it is not only unbelievable the lack of accountability and transparency of
companies that work with micro-beads but so is the fact that in our country there
are no governing organisms to test and control what is in our cleaning and
personal care products; which we believe it or not they are possibly the most toxic
chemicals and harmful to health and the environment. Isn’t it inconceivable that
we are using and consuming these products containing micro-beads in our daily
lives and that a tiny fraction of the population knows about their existence and
about their actual effects on the planet and in our own bodies?
Today I invite you to reflect on this matter, on the seriousness and the importance
of protecting the health of citizens and the national natural territory. I know there
are political issues which appear to have higher "priority" but in this case I believe
there’s no bigger priority than the health of the Colombian population and the
defense and protection of our rights as consumers. I assure you that the
Colombians would value your effort to care for their health and the planet by
banning the micro-beads in the country or at least by creating an entity that
ensures, reviews and verifies that the products we use to clean our homes and our
bodies are really safe for our health and the health of the environment.
I find also important to mention that 18 US states, Canada, Australia and many
European countries are working intensively in order to prohibit the micro-pearls for
the benefit of their citizens and the eco-systems which these particles affects. It
would be a giant step for Colombia to the take example of these countries and
show the world that Colombia cares about the environment and its precious
natural resources and as well as the well-being of its inhabitants.
