16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 17, 2016 The Pastor’s Desk
Dear Friends,
May the Lord give you peace!
Another successful carnival has come to end. Thank you very much
to everyone who volunteered to make the carnival a success. I am
especially grateful to Anne Silversey, Carol Tarlo, Chris Stammer
and Roe Born who did so much behind-the-scenes work getting the
carnival off the ground and keeping it running! Thanks to everyone!
As you know, the St. Mary’s Annual Fund is well underway. To
date, we have raised $169,000 of our $350,000 goal. If you have
made a gift, I thank you very much. If you have not made a gift,
I ask that you prayerfully consider an annual gift that can be paid
over the course of the campaign. Every month you receive an email
from me updating you on the progress of the campaign and giving
you a short explanation of how a portion of the money is used.
There are so many great ministries here at St. Mary’s and they all
benefit from your generosity. Thank you very much!
I’d like to remind you about the Pathways Counseling Center
Golf Tournament sponsored by Benefit Solutions. This year’s
event takes place Monday, August 15, at Black Bear Golf Club in
Franklin, NJ. The Shotgun Start is at 9 AM. The cost is $150 per golfer
and includes golf fees, cart, free range balls, gift bag, full breakfast
and BBQ buffet. To register call Benefit Solutions at 973.808.2888,
ext. 210 or 223. Pathways is a great organization! Please come out and
support this very important and life-giving ministry!
Our country continues to struggle for peace at home. As Christians
and as Franciscans we cannot sit idly by as violence erupts and
consumes any of our fellow Americans. Fifty-three years ago
within our country, when basic human and civil rights were being
denied to African-Americans, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. writing
from his prison cell in Birmingham, Alabama, reminded people of
some fundamental truths. Dr. King wrote: “I am cognizant of the
interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in
Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught
in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of
destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never
again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial “outside
agitator” idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never
be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.” His words
challenged and united people then and they can hopefully do the
same for us now. We must remember we are all sisters and brothers.
Let us always and everywhere pray for peace, understanding and
reconciliation.
Thanks for a great week and best wishes for a great one to come!
Pace e Bene,

2016 Annual Fund Update
I
t’s been three months since we launched the 2016-2017
Annual Fund and we have already raised $169,384.00. If
you’ve already made a gift, thanks!
Your gift helps all our ministries like St. Mary’s Music
Ministry.
Did you know that Music Ministry has some lifelong
members? Some of our ministers have been with the choirs
for 20, 30, 40 or more years! We are so lucky to currently
have two young adults who play and sing with us on a
weekly basis. Hannah Comia and Matt Rief play and sing
at the family liturgies, as well as Saturday masses. They are
also both members of the Chamber Choir. Hannah began
her ministry in first grade in the Children’s Choir. She
sang through grammar school and became the pianist for
Youth Band in 8th grade! She is currently studying piano
performance and vocal jazz at William Paterson University.
Matt became the guitarist for Youth Band in 6th grade,
and we quickly discovered that he is proficient on many
instruments. On any given Sunday, Matt may be sitting in
with the House Band playing guitar, drums, bass or piano!
He will be studying music at William Paterson next year
as well. We are so blessed as a ministry to have these
talented young people worship with us and grateful that the
community of St. Mary’s supports all of our ministers as we
work to enrich the liturgy for our community.

Please Come and
Celebrate
St. Mary of Magdala
at a Prayer Service to be held
Monday, July 18,
at 7:30 PM in St. Mary’s
Church.
Refreshments following
the service.
O
nce again we will join with our neighbors from
Our Lady of Consolation in celebrating one of the
foremost leaders in the early Church. Mary of Magdala
led the group of women who accompanied Jesus and
supported him in his ministry, was present at his death,
and was the first to proclaim the good news of His
Resurrection to the other disciples.
Pope Francis recently decided to raise the celebration
of St. Mary Magdalene’s memorial to a feast day,
equal to those of the apostles. The change reflects her
status as the apostle to the apostles and a witness to
God’s mercy. This also emphasizes “the dignity of
women, the New Evangelization and the greatness of
the mystery of Divine Mercy.” The Holy Father took
this decision precisely in the context of the Jubilee of
Mercy to signify the importance of this woman who
showed a great love for Christ and was much loved by
Christ,” said Archbishop Arthur Roce, the Secretary of
the Congregation for Divine Worship.

Lucas 10: 38-42

Bendito seas, Señor
Dios de toda la creación.
En tu bondad
nos has creado.
En tu misericordia
nos has redimido,
podamos conocer
tu santo y verdadero mandamiento;
el discipulado,
para que podamos responder
a las necesidades de la comunidad
y no sólo a nuestras propias necesidades, y
la gratitud, para que, por el bien común,
podamos entregarnos a los demás.
¡Que descubramos lo que nos
corresponde hacer a cada uno, y que
hagamos buenas obras cada día
