Isabel y Fernando, los Reyes Católicos, no podían dejar a
Aroche sin un templo de gran dignidad y talla. Por eso, en
1483 se empieza su construcción, que duró hasta el siglo
XVII. Reúne, en un solo edificio, los estilos gótico, mudéjar, renacentista y neoclásico. Su reloj de sol ha visto pasar
cientos de equinoccios; las campanas de su torre han prestado fiel servicio al pueblo. Por eso, los arochenos idolatran
a su iglesia y la miran con orgullo.
De planta basilical, sus tres naves se levantan como queriendo tocar el cielo con los pilares góticos. Las puertas
renacentistas del Sol y Las Flores y la de Las Limosnas, de
factura gótica, han dejado pasar a generaciones enteras en
busca de refugio para el cuerpo y el alma. En sus sucesivas
remodelaciones han participado arquitectos tan famosos
como Hernán Ruiz II, Diego de Riaño o Miguel de Zumárraga.
Una vez dentro, sus retablos y la rica imaginería que contiene no dejan indiferente al visitante. No se ha reparado
en el empeño y esto se nota en la notable belleza de todo
el conjunto. Una perla enclavada en la Sierra. Una sorpresa
para el despistado que jamás esperase algo así. Digna de
cualquier gran ciudad, la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la
Asunción luce orgullosa en plena Sierra de Aracena y Picos
de Aroche.
Isabel and Fernando, the Catholic Kings, could not let Aroche without a temple with great size and dignity. Therefore,
it construction started in 1483 and it ended in the XVIIth
century. It combines, in only one building, the Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance and neoclassic styles. It sun clock has
seen the passing of hundreds of equinoxes; the bells in its
tower has provided a loyal service to this town. That is why
the people from Aroche idolize their church and feel proud
of it.
Its three naves rise as if they wanted to touch the sky with
the gothic pillars. The renaissance doors Puerta del Sol and
Puerta de las Flores, and the gothic Puerta de las Limosnas
have given access to complete generations that were looking for shelter for body and soul.
Once inside, the altarpieces and the rich imagery do not leave visitors indifferent. The remarkable beauty of the ensemble is due to the great effort made in its construction. This
church is a pearl placed in the Sierra region. It is a surprise
for those scatterbrains who never expected something like
this. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción proudly
shines at the heart of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche region, but it is worthy of any big city.
