PREFACIO
Ante un procedimiento quirúrgico, el cirujano debe tener en cuenta tres aspectos importantes:
1) ¿por qué se realiza la intervención?; 2) ¿en qué momento de la evolución de la enfermedad
debe llevarse a cabo?, y 3) ¿cuáles son los pasos técnicos a seguir? El objetivo de este texto
es describir de forma detallada, paso a paso, «cómo realizar» la gran mayoría de los procedimientos ortopédicos. El «porqué» y el «cuándo» se resumen al inicio de cada uno de ellos.
No obstante, se supone que el cirujano entiende los conceptos básicos, entiende «por qué»
y entiende «cuándo», y que esta comprensión le ha llevado a tomar la decisión definitiva de
realizar un procedimiento concreto. Este texto está concebido para revisar y describir con
detalle los sucesivos pasos de la cirugía prevista.
Técnicas quirúrgicas en hombro y codo difiere de otros libros en que es esencialmente
visual. Cada procedimiento se describe de manera sistemática con originales y precisas ilustraciones, y esto permitirá al cirujano ser capaz de visualizar cada paso importante de un
procedimiento tal y como éste se desarrolla en un caso real.
Cada capítulo ha sido editado por un especialista con conocimientos específicos y experiencia en la disciplina. Los editores se han esforzado para reclutar a los mejores autores en
cada procedimiento, y han revisado el trabajo final. Ha resultado muy estimulante trabajar
con todas estas personas, admirables y de reconocido talento, y me siento honrado de haber
participado en esta gratificante experiencia.
