Morales, presidenta de la organización sin fines de lucros Concerned Residents for Improvement Inc. (COREFI,
por sus siglas en inglés) la cual fue diseñada
el 17 de febrero, 2008 para ayudar a mejorar la
calidad de vida a personas y familia bajo nivel de
pobreza. En Corefi no se tolera la discriminación
solo vemos la necesidad y la preocupación de
las personas bajo nivel de pobreza. En Corefi,
nos preocupamos por el necesitado por eso
nos dedicamos voluntariamente ayudar al
necesitado. En Corefi, tenemos alrededor de 200
clientes con diferentes necesidades. Muchos de
ellos ciegos con distrafia muscular, encamados,
envejecientes enfermos y solos sin nadie que

sean por ellos. Trabajaron toda su vida
pero el patrono nunca les saco el seguro
social y ahora no cualifican para nada- ni
para auspicio cuando los doctores los han
diagnosticado terminales. No cualifican
para salud en el hogar ni para equipos
médicos por no tener la tarjeta de salud
del Seguro Social. El municipio de Vieques ayuda
con lo que puede, pero no puede llegar a todo
el necesitado, porque el nivel de pobreza es
demasiado alto. Nuestra organización entiende
y sabe que no podemos cambiar el mundo, pero
sí, podemos ayudar a mejorar la calidad de vida
de algunos necesitados, ayuda que ofrecemos si
está a nuestro alcance y existen los fondos.
Por eso, necesitamos de empresas y
comerciantes y todo el que pueda aportar su
granito de arena para esta humilde causa. Yo
también soy una Envejeciente pero mientras
pueda valerme por mi misma estoy dispuesta
a seguir mi misión de ayudar al menos pudiente. Para mí, no hay días feriados ni fines de
semana ni vacaciones. Estoy disponible 24-7
cuando ocurre una emergencia. He tenido que
dormir en sillas sentada cuando acompaño
un cliente que no tiene a nadie que le sirva de
escolta a un hospital, porque la escolta no puede
dejar el paciente solo hasta que no se le da un
diagnóstico y se deciden si van a hospitalizar
y cuando esa decisión llega, yo no puedo irme
a mi casa, porque a esa hora no hay lanchas ni
aviones para poder regresar a mi casa. Pero, eso
no es culpa de nadie, es culpa mía porque hacer
el bien es mi misión y me siento feliz cuando
resuelvo un problema a un necesitado que creía
que su problema no tenía solución y me pagan
con lágrimas, abrazos, besos y Bendiciones que
feliz me hacen sentir. Se me quitan los dolores y
me siento nueva como un joven de 20 o 30 años
cuando tengo 71 años de edad, que viva Dios
quien es el que me ha puesto esta misión en mi
vida y la llevo con orgullo y dignidad. Yo también
tengo mis problemas y para mí no hay quien me
resuelva, solo mi Dios se encargará algún día
de resolver los míos para yo también tener una
mejor calidad de vida.

Sonia Ana Ventura Morales, president of the non-profit organization
Concerned Residents for Improvement Inc.
(COREFI), which was designed on February
17, 2008 to help improve the quality of life for
individuals and families under poverty level.
At Corefi, discrimination is not tolerated.
We only see the need and concerns of the
people under the poverty level. In Corefi, we
care for the needy which is why we dedicate
our volunteer work to help the needy. At
Corefi we have about 200 clients with
different needs. Many of them blind with
muscular dystrophy, bedridden, elderly, sick
and alone with no one to be there for them.
They worked all their lives, but their employers never paid their social security and now
they do not qualify for anything, not even
sponsorship when doctors have diagnosed
them with terminal illnesses. They don’t
qualify for home health or medical equipment, because they do not have the Social
Security health card (Medicare).
The municipality of Vieques helps in any
way they can, but they cannot reach all
the needy because the poverty level is too
high. Our organization understands that
and we know we cannot change the world,
but we can help improve the quality of life
of some of those in need, if it is within our
reach and funds.
Therefore, we need businesses and individuals who can contribute their grain of sand
for this humble cause. I am also elderly, but
while I can still care for myself, I am ready to
continue my mission to help the less affluent.
For me, there are no holidays or weekends.
I am available 24-7 when an emergency occurs. I’ve had to sleep sitting on chairs when
I accompany a client who does not have anyone to go with them to the hospital, because
a hospital escort cannot leave the patient
alone until he or she is given a diagnosis and
the decision whether to hospitalize them or
not, and when that decision comes, I cannot
go home, because at that time, there are no
boats or planes to get back home.
However that’s not anyone’s fault. It is my
burden because doing good is my mission
and I feel happy when I help with a problem
of someone in need that believed the problem had no solution. I get paid with hugs
and kisses and tears and Blessings which
make me feel very happy. The satisfaction
I get soothes my aches and pain and I feel
as new as a 20 or 30 year old and I have
71 years of age. Praise God who is the one
that gave me this mission for my life, which
I carry with pride and dignity. I have my
problems and nobody solves them for me.
Only my God will take care of them so that I
also have a better quality of life.
