It is a fact that the Hispanic community in the
United States keeps taking gigantic steps in this
country. Every electoral cycle, we reach a new
record of political participation, millions of
Latinos and Latinas already have their own
businesses, and in academic terms, we keep
growing in a systematic way too.
Es un hecho que la comunidad hispana de
Estados Unidos sigue dando pasos agigantados
en este país. Cada ciclo electoral alcanzamos un
nuevo récord de participación política, millones
de latinas y latinos tienen ya su propio negocio, y
los niveles de escolaridad siguen creciendo de
manera sistemática.
But it is also true that we have many setbacks.
For example, we have a disproportional impact
on new HIV and AIDS cases. Even though we are
17 percent of the population, we represent over
23 percent of new HIV cases. Many don’t get
medical exams, or look for assistance, or
treatment, either for cultural or economic
reasons.
Pero también es verdad que padecemos muchos
rezagos. Por ejemplo, sufrimos un impacto
desproporcionado de los nuevos casos de VIH y
SIDA. Aunque los hispanos somos el 17 por
ciento de la población, representamos más del
23 por ciento de los nuevos casos de VIH.
Muchos no se hacen exámenes médicos, ni
buscan asistencia o tratamientos por razones
culturales o económicas.
The good news is that a growing number of
Latinos and Latinas are responding to the call of
a new campaign supported by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to dispel
stigmas surrounding HIV that cause many people
to live in silence, and raise awareness on the
importance of early HIV testing and treatment in
Spanish for our community.

As more Latino families, youth and couples
participate in the conversations on HIV/AIDS, it
becomes more natural to talk about a subject
that was once taboo for the community.
