The following chart shows common affirmative and negative expressions.
sí (yes)
algo (something, anything)
alguien (somebody, anybody)
algún, alguna,-os,-as (some, any)
o…o (either…or)
siempre (always)
también (also, too)
no (no)
nada (nothing, anything)
nadie (nobody, anybody)
ningún, ninguna,-os,-as (none, not any)
ni…ni (neither…nor)
nunca (never)
tampoco (neither, either)
In Spanish it is possible to put a negative expression before the verb and one
or more negative expressions after the verb. It is also common for certain
negative expressions to be used alone before the verb.
Luis no compra nunca en aquella tienda.
Luis nunca compra en aquella tienda.
Luis never buys anything at
that store.
When nadie or a form of ninguno are direct objects referring to people, the
personal a is required.
No veo a nadie en la oficina.
No veo a ninguna amiga aquí.
I don’t see anyone in the office.
I don’t see any friend here.
