BMS SECONDSHIFT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS RED CROSS BABYSITTING CERTIFICATION Start your babysitting business on the right foot and learn how to be a safe, professional and reliable sitter. This certification class includes training in leadership, child behavior and discipline, professionalism, safety, basic childcare (bottle feeding, holding, etc.) and basic First Aid. Taught by Dorothy Howard of the Basalt Recreation Department. Meets Tuesdays & Thursdays beginning November 10 through December 17. This class costs $40 for supplies and certification. Limited to 10 students FINESSE YOUR FICTION Students interested in writing fiction will learn the basics about the craft through fun, engaging prompts and writing opportunities that introduce language and short story elements such as plot, voice, dialogue, and description. The skills learned will help students become stronger writers overall as well. Class is held once a week on Thursdays for 1.5 hours. Taught by Ms. Johnson POETRY ROUND TABLE Join Nicole Stanton of Aspen Words and learn to bend and stretch words until they do exactly what you want them to! Write about the weird and the wacky and the plain old every day. We’ll read poems, write poems, and speak them aloud. We’ll end with an Open Mic performance for friends and family. Taught by Nicole Stanton, a poetry nut, recent graduate of Wesleyan University and the co-editor of Loam Magazine, an online environmental arts magazine. (www.loammagazine.com) Class is held once a week on Tuesdays for 1.5 hours SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE Come and explore the rich Spanish language through music, culture, games, food, art, history, and puppetry. Broaden your world and life possibilities in a fun and engaging way! Class is held once a week on Thursdays for 1.5 hours Taught by Alejandra Rico, native Spanish speaker and Spanish teacher at Waldorf School on the Roaring Fork ART CLUB Come join art club where you can practice lots of new mediums creating animals. Students will sculpt animals out of wire, clay, or wood in various artistic styles. They will also try their hand at paint, oil pastel and colored pencil. Taught by Ms. Jones, class is held once a week on Mondays for 1.5 hours. MOSAICS & FOUND OBJECTS Join us @ the Wyly studio + gallery, learning about mosaic design and creation, using mosaic tiles, mirrors as well as found objects. We’ll break ceramics and glass — maybe even furniture — and repurpose all the destruction into beautiful new sculptural work. This class is held at the Wyly Art Center at 99 Midland Ave, Basalt. A staff member will walk with students from BMS to the center for class. Parents should pick students up at the Wyly Art Center after class at 5:00. Held once a week on Mondays for 1.5 hours. Taught by Penny Greenwell, art instructor at the Wyly Art Center. BEATS LAB WITH JAZZ ASPEN SNOWMASS The JAS Beat Lab is an opportunity for small groups of students to compose, arrange, and mix original music using the Berklee Pulse program and the professional recording software Reason 8. The program is designed to introduce students to the concepts of computer-based music production in a studio environment while simultaneously having them create the music that is being recorded. It is an applied education involving them on the instrument they play, the development of keyboard and programming skills, as well as an understanding of how to collaborate effectively within a group. Class is 1.5 hours on Tuesdays. Taught by Chris Bank and Alex Heaton of Jazz Aspen Snowmass BECOME A RADIO DJ! Students will learn what it takes to be a radio DJ. We’ll tour the KDNK station, practice communication skills, interview techniques and audio editing to create a youth news radio program that we will air on KDNK Carbondale Community Access Radio. Class is held once a week on Tuesdays for 1.5 hours Classes on October 20, November 17 and December 15 will be held at KDNK radio station. On these days, Access AfterSchool will provide transportation to the station and return the students to BMS at 5:00 pm. From rockets to chemical reactions to weight-bearing bridges to conductive dough, projects will range across the science, tech, engineering, and art spectrum to help build critical thinking skills, innovation, and creativity. Are you a great author, poet, or artist, itching to explore? Join this adventure into nature writing and scientific creativity! This class includes: hands-on exploration and scientific experiments inside and outside, creative writing, nature journaling, and playful poetry expression. Taught by Aspen Center for Environmental Studies.
