A full moon over seven inches of new snow…a massive snowball fight…snowshoeing
planned for the following day…Reports coming in by cell phone last week from the 7th Grade
Science Magnet trip to Yosemite were euphoric. Snowfall--the first ever for some of these
Southern California kids--lent a special luster to five days of study at the Yosemite Institute.
Students hiked along the Lower Falls in Yosemite Valley, explored “Spider Cave,” and crosscountry skied at Crane Flat, all the while learning about Yosemite’s rich ecosystem and history. The Yosemite trip, as well as the 6th grade Catalina trip and 8th grade AstroCamp outing, helps our students grow socially and emotionally through the shared experiences of being responsible to each other while learning about nature. A special thanks to our chaperones and teachers, the Science Magnet leadership, and parents who support this trip.
Buddah Walks in Ms Loopesko’s class
Mrs. Loopesko’s 1st period class gives a staged reading of “Buddha Walks,” about the life of
the young Siddhartha. In January 6th graders participated in the Spirit Series, a program that
acquaints students with the lives of historical figures who have lived for a higher purpose.
Letter from the Principal
Dear John Adams Community,
First semester is over, and students and staff are looking forward to a fresh start second semester. Sixth graders have
just finished their performance of “Buddha Walks,” a play about ancient India brought to us by the Spirit Series. Students
and teachers have enjoyed the study of India through creating this dramatic production. Every student in nine humanities classes had a part. I attended several performances and was impressed by the students’ involvement in their roles
and their thoughts in the discussion that followed the play. They will also be writing essays.
Tardy sweeps have become a part of life at JAMS. When the bell rings, an announcement is made if there is a tardy
sweep. Students who do not make it to class on time must report to the quad to be assigned a detention for nutrition
time. If they fail to come to the cafeteria for nutrition detention, they are assigned lunch in the in-school suspension
room. Being late to class is a problem because it interrupts instruction, and the teacher has to spend time with students
who are tardy explaining assignments and answering questions, that could be spent with the whole class.
Everyone at JAMS appreciates all the parent support. Thanks for all the post-its and copy paper. We have put it all to
good use

January 10th Cyberbullying and Peer Mediation: presented at PTSA Meeting

At the January 10 PTSA meeting, Jonathan Fishman presented parent education: about ways parents can help prevent
children from being involved in cyberbullying or otherwise harmful situations. He recommended that parents begin by setting
the rules, by defining what is acceptable in terms of user names, programs, internet sites, where and how long they can be
on-line. He advocates strongly for students’ use of the computer be in shared space in the house rather than be isolated in
his or her bedroom. This creates an opportunity to dialog and have a shared experience. For further information, read the

On February 7th, Erica Zacharie, who leads JAMS Peer Mediation Program, will present the Parent Ed portion of our next
PTSA Meeting. PTSA will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Library prior to Erica Zacharie’s presentation on Peer Mediation which
begins at 7 p.m.
The California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) is an organization that emphasizes high standards of
scholarship and community service for California students. Founded in 1967, the California Junior Scholarship Federation is
part of the California Scholarship Federation (CSF), the oldest scholastic, scholarship institution in the state of California.
All 7th and 8th graders interested in joining CJSF (California Junior Scholarship Federation) must have mostly A's on the first
semester report card, excluding PE and exploratory classes, citizenship grades of S or better, and no negative comments. Seventh graders enroll with Ms. Woo in Room 26 before or after school; eighth graders enroll with Ms. Goldberg in
Room 34 before or after school.
Enrollment for CJSF begins on Friday, February 8th and ends BEFORE 3:00pm on Wednesday, February 20th.
Eighth graders MUST re-enroll for membership for second semester.
Grade level meetings will be held during lunchtime in the library the week of February 25th to discuss community service
(due February 29th for eighth graders and May 2nd for seventh graders) and the special off-campus activity on May 23,
2008.

performed at Citrus College (Glendora) on January 20, 2008.

These 11 musicians were among 1,500 California musicians who participated in the audition process. They will be rehearsing and performing in Fresno on Feb. 22-23 and performing at the Saroyan Theatre (Fresno Convention Center).
The John Adams Dance class will be having its first performance of the school year on Friday February 15th during
third and fourth periods. The performance will consist of a variety of dances and is open to students, faculty, and staff. I will
be allowing the parents of the dancers to attend, and will verify with Ms. Shaw as to whether or not if other members of the
community are permitted to attend.

If your child had hearing or vision difficulty during screening,
I send a referral letter home for the child to be seen by a
doctor to be evaluated. At this time I have sent 40 referrals
out and only one has been brought back to me, showing
that the student was seen and if the doctor’s findings resulted in treatment/glasses. I need those referrals back.
In February we will be screening for scoliosis. 8th grade
boys will be screened on February 1st and 7th grade girls on
February 8th. This is a quick, simple, visual examination of
the student’s spine. Should there be positive findings you
will receive a referral for a doctor’s evaluation.
Handwashing is the single, most effective way to stay
healthy. Please emphasize this to your children. They
should be washing their hands after using the bathroom and
before meals, at a minimum.

Parents, if you have just a few hours to donate to JAMS this year, here’s your chance: Strap on your walking/jogging/
running shoes for the first-ever JAMS Rock ’n’ Run!
WHAT IS IT? A fun fundraiser for the John Adams Middle School PTSA. Students ask for pledges from sponsors, then
walk/jog/run as many laps as they can in a 30-minute period while a deejay plays music. After completing the Rock ’n’
Run, students collect donations from sponsors. (Pledges and donation forms are due Friday, April 4th.)
INCENTIVES:
• Every participant receives a Rock ’n’ Run bracelet.
• Special awards will recognize students who exhibit outstanding effort, unselfish acts of kindness, and true JAMS determination.
• How much money you raise determines additional prizes, from Rock ’n’ Run T-shirts to AMC movie passes to gift
cards to Borders or Game Stop, to a limo ride and lunch in Beverly Hills.

Bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes del programa de
Magneto de ciencias del 7 grado quienes asistieron
al Instituto Yosemite durante la semana de enero 20th
- 25th. Nuestros estudiantes aprendieron acerca de
la naturaleza mientras trepaban en el valle de Yosemite y esquiaban en Crane Flat. Ellos disfrutaron
explorando la “Cueva de la Araña y viendo las Lower Falls, y aprendiendo acerca de la historia y el
rico ecosistema de Yosemite. Para muchos de nuestros estudiantes originarios del Sur de California que
nunca han visto caer nieve, experimentar una tormenta de nieve el miércoles les ha ampliado las experiencias de sus vidas. El viaje de Yosemite , así
también como el viaje a Catalina de los niños de 6
grado y el viaje a AstroCamp de los estudiantes del
8 grado, les ayuda a crecer emocionalmente y socialmente a través de las experiencias de hacerse
responsables el uno al otro mientras aprender acerca de la naturaleza. Un agradecimiento especial
para nuestros maestros y chaperones, así también como el liderazgo del programa y padres quienes
apoyaron este viaje.
“Caminatas de Buda,”

“Caminatas de Buda,” acerca de la vida del joven Siddhartha. En enero estudiantes del 6th
grado participaron en el Spirit Series, un programa que ayuda a que los estudiantes conozcan
las vidas de figuras históricas que han vivido sus vidas con un alto propósito.

Queridos John Adams Padres:
Ya termino el primer semestre y los estudiantes y facultad estamos mirando hacia el comienzo del segundo semestre.
Los estudiantes del sexto grado han acabado recientemente sus presentaciones de “Buddha Walks,” una obra acerca de
la India antigua que nos fue entregada por Spirit Series. Los estudiantes y maestros han disfrutado estudiar la India a
través de esta creación dramática. Cada estudiantes de las nueve clases de Humanidades participaron. Yo asistí a muchas actuaciones y estuve impresionada por la participación en sus roles y sus ideas y pensamientos en la discusión que
siguió la actuación. Ellos también van a escribir ensayos.
Rastreo de tardanzas se han convertido en parte de la vida en JAMS. Cuando suena la campana, se hace un anuncio si
es que va haber un rastreo de tardanzas. Los estudiantes que no llegan a tiempo a sus clases deberán reportarse en el
área del quad donde se les asignará detención para la hora de nutrición. Si ellos no vienen a la cafetería para la detención, se les asignará detención dentro de la escuela a la hora del almuerzo. Llegar tarde a la clase es un problema ya
que interrumpe la instrucción, y el maestro-a tiene que pasar tiempo con los estudiantes que llegaron tarde explicándoles
los trabajos y respondiendo sus preguntas, tiempo que podría pasar con toda la clase.

Mediación entre compañeros e intimidación en el mundo Cibernético: Presentado en la junta del PTSA
En la junta del 10 de enero de la PTSA, Jonathan Fishman presentó acerca de educación para padres: acerca de formas en que padres pueden prevenir a que sus hijos se les intimide al usar la computadora, y también otras situaciones
de daño. El ha recomendado a los padres a que empiecen a poner reglas, definir lo que es aceptable en termino de
programas, localizaciones en el Internet, y cuando y donde pueden estar ellos interconectados en la red electrónica. El
aboga a que los estudiantes usen la computadora en un área común en el hogar en lugar del cuarto personal. Esto
crea una oportunidad de dialogo y tener una experiencia compartida. Para más información, lea los minutos de la PTSA

Feliz Año 2008.
Si su hijo-a ha tenido alguna dificultad con la vision o el oìdo durante la revisiòn que hicimos, he mandado un referimiento a
la casa para que su hijo-a sea visto por un doctor. Hasta esta fecha yo he mandado 40 referimientos y solo uno ha regresado, enseñando que el estudiante ha sido llevado al doctor y los resultados del exàmen dejandome saber que el estudiante
necesita anteojos. Necesito que ustedes regresen los referimientos.
En febrero vamos a revisar por escoliosis. Los estudiantes del octavo grado van a examinarse el 1 de febrero, y las niñas
del sèptimo grado el 8 de febrero. Esta es una examinaciòn visual simple de la espina dorsal. Si es que el resultado es positivo, usted va a recibir un referimiento para que lleve a su hijo-a al doctor.
Lavarse las manos es la forma màs simple y efectiva para mantenerse saludable. Por favor haga recordar èsto a sus hijos.
Ellos deben lavarse las manos despuès de que usan el inodoro y àntes y despuès de comer, como mìnimo.

Measure R preserves funding that is crucial to high quality education in our local schools — with no increase in tax rates.
PTA believes that great schools are part of what make Santa Monica and Malibu great places to live and help protect property
values.
But the State doesn’t provide enough funding for the high-quality schools that our students deserve, and that our community
expects. That’s why Santa Monica and Malibu voters have approved additional school funding. That local support will expire if
it is not renewed now.
Measure R is not a new tax. It renews existing local funding already in place and previously approved by voters.
Without Measure R, neighborhood schools face serious cuts. Local schools would be forced to lay off more than 70 teachers, increase class sizes, and cut important education programs. No other source of funding exists to prevent these cuts if
Measure R fails.
Measure R will allow our schools to continue to:
• Retain excellent teachers.
• Support reading and literacy instruction.
• Protect smaller class sizes (20 students instead of 30 in Grades K-3).
• Offer programs to improve student skills in math.
• Preserve science and technology instruction.
• Support elementary school libraries.
Keep music and art in our schools.
Annual audits by Independent Citizens Oversight Committee will ensure funds are properly spent. Every penny of Measure R
spending will be tracked and reported annually to taxpayers. No Measure R funds can be taken by the State.
No funds can be used for administrator salaries. An exemption is available for senior homeowners.

La PTA de la JAMS Apoya la Medida R
VOTE
La Medida R mantiene la educación de buena calidad en nuestras escuelas locales — sin tener que recurrir a aumentar los
impuestos.
La PTA piensa que las escuelas de Santa Mónica y Malibú son magníficas y esto no sólo hace que estos sean buenos lugares donde vivir, sino también ayuda a proteger los valores de la propiedad.
Pero el estado no provee fondos suficientes para que las escuelas preparatorias sean de la buena calidad que merecen nuestros estudiantes, y lo que la comunidad espera. Es por esto que los votantes de Santa Monica Malibu han aprobado fondos
adicionales para la educación. Este apoyo local está a punto de llegar a su fin si no se le aprueba ya.
La Medida R no es un nuevo impuesto. Simplemente renueva los fondos locales que nuestras escuelas necesitan.
Sin la Medida R las escuelas de nuestra comunidad se tendrían que enfrentar a serios recortes. Se tendría que despedir a más de 70 maestros, aumentar el número de estudiantes por clase y recortar importantes programas educativos. No
existe otra forma de obtener fondos para prevenir estos recortes si fracasa la Medida R.
La Medida R va a permitir que nuestras escuelas continúen con:
• Retener a excelentes maestros.
• Apoyar la instrucción en lectura y escritura.
• Proteger el que los salones de K a 3ero tengan solamente 20 estudiantes en lugar de 30.
• Continuar programas para mejorar las destrezas en matemáticas.
• Mantener la instrucción de ciencia y tecnología.
• Apoyar las bibliotecas en escuelas primarias.
Mantener la música y el arte en nuestras escuelas
Auditación anual por ciudadanos independientes. El Comité de Revisión asegurará que los fondos se gasten de forma apropiada. Cada centavo del gasto de la Medida R será revisado y se reportará anualmente a contribuyentes. Los fondos de la
Medida no los puede tocar el Estado. Estos fondos no pueden utilizarse para pagar salarios
de administradores. Incluye una excepción para dueños de casa que son ya mayores.
