¿Qué estudios tienes? Desde pequeña tuve

D
edicada a hacer arte escénico tanto
en teatro, circos y cabarets, hasta en
festivales en las calles, la suiza Jessica
Arpin, se presentó Aquí en Playa en
el festival ‘Xiimbal’ con un espectáculo en vivo,
una unión de circo, prosa y comedia.
Esta carismática actriz nos llevó a chicos y
grandes por un mundo genial de fantasía y
diversión: la historia de una joven extranjera a
quien le gusta tanto Playa que quiere quedarse, pero la única forma de permanecer es
casándose. Tiene solo veinte minutos para
encontrar al hombre de su vida. Organiza un
concurso e invita a dos personas del público a
quienes hace participar en unas pruebas para
decidir quién será su marido. Mientras tanto,
Jessica realiza acrobacias en su bicicleta amarilla tratando de seducirlos. “El espectáculo es
un pretexto para conocer otras culturas, otros
idiomas y otras formas de vida”.
¿Qué estudios tienes?
Desde pequeña tuve lecciones de teatro, circo,
baile, etc. Hice un año en la Universidad y
después me fui a Montreal, Canadá, a estudiar
en una escuela de circo por cuatro años.
Después la formación ha sido continua, he
tomado diversos talleres para técnica clown.
¿Cómo y cuando comenzaste con la bicicleta?
Comencé a aprender a los dieciocho años con
el monociclo en la escuela de circo. Con mi
bicicleta ya tengo ocho años conviviendo.
¿Te gustaría casarte como en la comedia que
presentas?
Para mí no es tan importante. Es un pretexto
para hablar de un tema universal en forma de
comedia y hacer pensar al público sobre eso.
Tengo amigas de mi edad que rápido tuvieron
hijos y me he dado cuenta que no toman en
serio el papel de madre. Quise integrar esa
problemática sin dar una lección y sin matar
esa belleza, porque puede ser muy lindo tener
un hijo, pero cuántos lo hacen deseándolo y
cuántos sólo para tener un amor incondicional
de un niño que te necesita. Tenemos que ser un
poco más activos y no pasivos en la sociedad.
¿En cuantos idiomas exhibes tu espectáculo?
En varios, pero me gusta hacerlo en el dialecto
que corresponda para que el contacto sea más
íntimo con el público. Por ejemplo en Italia, en
cada pueblo que me he presentado, el dialecto
es distinto.

El espectáculo que realizaste ¿lo presentas en
más partes del mundo?
Sí, llevo cuatro años efectuándolo, con más
de 200 representaciones. La mayor parte la he
presentado en Italia, después en Suiza, Bélgica,
Serbia, Canadá, Aquí en Playa y en Brasil.
De las culturas que has conocido ¿cuál te ha
dejado huella?
Todas, pero fue impactante vivir a menos 40º
en el Ártico Polar con mis amigos inuits e ir
a pescar focas con ellos. Con los inuits, que
habían vivido en igloos y ahora tiene casitas
de madera, la costumbre es que las personas
entran a tu casa sin tocar y no tienes que
atenderlos; sigues haciendo tus cosas y ellos,
si necesitan algo lo toman. Hay que abrir la
mente y gestionar como funciona su cultura y
su sociología.
¿Qué te gusto más de Playa?
Playa es bonito, pero tiene realidades muy
distintas e interesantes por conocer. Los
mexicanos son muy accesibles, abiertos y me
gustaría aprender maya.
Con este show no te ha pasado que alguno
de los chicos con los que interactúas te busca
después.
No dejo esa posibilidad. Estoy tan enfocada a
mi trabajo que en realidad cuando termina un
show tengo que arreglar nuevamente las cosas
para empezar otro.
Alguna vez alguien me invito a tomar algo, pero
nunca he pasado un momento no lindo, algo
peligroso.
¿Tienes un domicilio fijo?
“Vivo en mi cuerpo”. Mis padres están en
Ginebra y sé que tengo casa ahí, tengo una
casa en Tennadelli, tengo ahí mi espacio. Tengo
varias familias no biológicas sino escogidas,
por ejemplo en Montreal, en Brasil, hay muchos
lugares donde estoy como en casa.

working within various performing arts, including theater, circus
and cabaret, and even street festivals, the Swiss Jessica Arpin,
was in the beach festival ‘Xiimbal’ presentation here in Playa, with a live show, which combined
circus, comedy and prose.
The charismatic actress invited kids and adults alike to a great world of fantasy and fun: to the
story of a young foreigner who likes Playa so much that she wants to stay, but the only way to
stay is to get married. She has only twenty minutes to find the man of her life. She organizes
a contest and invites two audience members to participate in the competition as she decides
which one will be her husband. Meanwhile, Jessica performs stunts on her yellow bicycle trying to
seduce them. “The show is a gimmick for people to get to know other cultures, other languages
and other forms of life.”
What studies do you have?
Since childhood I had lessons in theater, circus,
dance, etc. I finished a year at the University and
then went to Montreal, Canada to study at a
circus school for four years. After that, training
has been ongoing; I have taken various art clown
workshops.
How and when did you start with the bicycle?
I started learning at the age of eighteen with the
unicycle in the circus school. Now I have eight
years living with this bicycle.
Would you like to get married like in the comedy
show?
To me it is not as important. It’s a pretext to
talk about a universal theme via comedy and
to make the public think about it. I have friends
my age who were quick to have children and I
realized that they do not take the role of being a
mother seriously. I wanted to integrate this issue
without preaching and without killing the beauty
of it; because it can be really wonderful to have a
child, but how many people truly want to, while
others just want the unconditional love of a
child who needs you. We have to be a little more
active rather than passive in society.
In how many languages do you exhibit your
show?
In several, but I like it to be in the local dialect to

create a more intimate contact with the public.
For example, in every town in Italy that I have
presented, the dialect was different.
Have you performed this show in other parts of
the world?
Yes, I have, for four years now, totaling more
than 200 performances. The majority were
presented in Italy, then in Switzerland, Belgium,
Serbia, Canada, here in Playa and Brazil.
Of the many cultures, which ones have impacted
you the most?
All of them, but it was very impressive to live 40
degrees below in the Polar Arctic with my Inuit
friends, and to go seal hunting with them. With
the Inuit, who had lived in igloos and now live in
log cabins, the custom is that people enter your
home without knocking and you do not have to
attend to them, you can keep doing your thing
and if they need something, they just take it. You
have to open your mind and understand how
their culture and sociology works.
What did you like most about Playa?
Playa is nice, but it has some very different
and interesting realities to learn more about.
Mexicans are very accessible, open and I would
like to learn Maya.
With this show, you never have one of the
gentleman contestants hounding after you?
I do not make that a possibility. I’m so focused
on my work that actually when the show finishes,
I have to immediately rearrange things to start
another.
Someone once invited me to have a drink, but I
have never had a bad moment; I have never felt
in danger.
Do you have a fixed address?
“I live in my body.” My parents are in Geneva
and I know I have a house there, I also have a
house in Tennadelli, and there I have my space.
I have various families, which are not biological
but chosen ones; for example in Montreal and in
Brazil, there are many places there where I’m at
home.
