What to Wear at Church?
Every year, this sensitive subject crops up:
What to wear for church. We Southern Californians relish our beautiful weather. The casual
lifestyle here can influence every aspect of our
lives, including our worship of God. But how
much is too much? Or how little is too little?
What is appropriate dress for church? The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that when it
comes to the celebration of the Eucharist,
“Bodily demeanor (gestures, clothing) ought to
convey the respect, solemnity and joy of this
mo-ment when Christ becomes our guest” (No.
1387). Clothing ought to reflect re-spect and solemnity.
When it comes to church clothing, it is time to
“dress up,” not “dress down.” A priest friend
of mine shared with me that it was customary
among African-American Catholics at his parish to wear one’s “Sunday-go-to-meetingclothes,” a slogan for the best clothes in one’s
closet. When people came to Mass, they looked
sharp. In the Holy Land and Rome, there are
signs at many sacred sites and security guards
that refuse admittance to those who are dressed
inappropriately. Consider how you may dress
if you were invited to meet the president at the
White House or attend a formal dinner.
Doesn’t a visit to meet Jesus and attend his
great banquet, the Euch-a-rist, rank higher?
Shouldn’t how we dress reflect this? The Lord
deserves our Sunday best. God will always take
us as we are. But, do we always take God as He
is? Doesn’t He deserve the best?
Have a blessed and holy week!
In Christ’s love, Fr. Pat

Ministerio Hispano
Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
Vigésimo Primer Domingo del
Tiempo Ordinario
Noticias de la Parroquia
Hoy
Inscripciones
cisco vienen renovando nuestro
(“Hemos comido y bebido contigo”) (Lucas 13:26).

Faith Formation
Faith Formation is a vital element of every Catholic
parish. The role of parish faith formation is to provide
organized and systematic approach to the instruction
and practice of the faith for everyone in the parish
community. The goal of this formation is to give each
member an understanding of their faith so they can
evangelize and witness to the faith in the greater secular community. The programs offered at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral parish reflect the diversity of an urban Southern California parish.
In addition to the weekly catechetical program special
events and speakers are presented throughout the
parish’s pastoral year.
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults)
RCIA an Invitation for everyone
to Community in Christ.
At St. Joseph Cathedral’s parish community we believe that everyone has an invitation to join the RCIA
process. The RCIA’s invitation is for those individuals who have not been baptized and wish to enter into
a relationship with Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic
Faith Community. The invitation is for those from
other Christian Faith communities who wish to become members of the Roman Catholic Church.
Catholics who have not completed the sacraments of
Confirmation and Eucharist will find the invitation is
for them to complete those sacraments. Catholics
who have not been active in their faith and wish to
return to an active sacramental relationship with the
faith community will find the RCIA a place to have
that journey. Also, Catholics who wish to renew their
faith by refreshing their knowledge of the church’s
teaching are most welcome.
Evangelization and Catechesis are the hallmarks of the
RCIA at St. Joseph Cathedral. For more information
write Bill Bischoff at [email protected] or call
the Parish Office.
