Fairmount has a Dual Immersion School, which means that some children are native
English speakers coming to learn Spanish, while others are native Spanish speakers,
seeking to maintain their Spanish language while they learn English. Kindergarten
instruction is 80% in Spanish and 20% in English. Instruction in English increases
incrementally each year until it reaches 50%/50% in fourth grade. Your child’s
homeroom teacher will speak to his/her students only in Spanish, except during classes
that are instructed in English.
Your role as a parent and the commitment you make to your child’s learning are
extremely crucial in your child’s support in an immersion program. We want to make
sure you understand the structure of the immersion program and the expectations we have
of families’ support. The following is a list of ways you can support your child in our
immersion program:
! Model a positive attitude toward learning Spanish
! If you do not know Spanish, try to learn along with your child or consider taking a
class on your own
! Prepare your child emotionally and academically for the high cognitive demands
of learning in a second language
• Arrange playdates with native Spanish speakers in your child’s classroom
• Invest in Spanish language materials: music, books, a bilingual dictionary,
Spanish dictionaries
• Expose your Spanish to spoken Spanish through television, radio, movies, music,
cultural events, neighborhood outings
• Utilize the resources at the SF Public Libraries to provide your child with books
and CDs in Spanish
• Read to your child in your native tongue, and if you’re able, in your child’s
second language

La Escuela Fairmount es una escuela de doble inmersión donde tenemos anglohablantes
que aprenden español e hispanohablantes que mantienen su español mientras aprenden
inglés. En kinder, la instrucción es 80% en español y 20% en inglés. La instrucción va
incrementando hasta llegar a 50%/50% en el cuarto grado. En kinder, el/la maestr@
principal de su hij@ le hablará en puro español excepto en las materias que se le enseñan
en inglés.
El papel que usted juega y el compromiso que puede hacer en cuanto al aprendizaje y el
éxito de su hijo en este programa son sumamente importantes. Queremos asegurarnos que
usted entiende la estructura del programa y las expectativas que tenemos en cuanto al
apoyo que las familias ofrecen a sus hijos:
! Modelar una actitud positiva hacia los dos idiomas. Anime a su hij@ a aprender el
inglés y explíquele la importancia de seguir desarrollando su español y mantener
su cultura.
! Evite usar el “Espanglés / Spanglish” con su hijo. Use un vocabulario tan
desarrollado y elevado como pueda en español porque eso le servirá tanto en
español como en inglés (eventualmente).
! Anime a su hij@ a contestarle en español cuando usted le habla en español y a
sentirse orgulloso de su español y su cultura.
! Si usted no sabe inglés, considere tomar una clase por su propia cuenta o trate de
aprender con su hij@.
! Su hijo recibirá 30 minutos de inglés diarios.
• Haga planes para que su hij@ juegue con niñ@s que hablan inglés.
• Invierta en materiales en ambos lenguajes: música, libros, diccionarios.
• Exponga a su hij@ al inglés por medio de: música, televisión, radio, eventos
culturales, clases de arte o música, equipos deportivos.
• Utilice los servicios de las bibliotecas públicas para sacar libros y otros materiales
en los dos idiomas.
• Lea con su hij@ en su lengua materna y si puede, en inglés también.
