An Invitation to Pray the St. Michael Prayer in the Domestic Church
As Bishop of the Diocese of Tyler, I feel particularly moved to encourage the regular praying of the Prayer to St.
Michael the Archangel as part of daily individual and family prayers.
Our world today is certainly in great need of heavenly assistance in the face of grave evils like terrorism,
pornography, attempts to redefine marriage and human sexuality, advancing relativistic and secular ideology, and,
perhaps most egregiously, the killing and dismemberment of unborn children. Whether intentional or not, the very
foundation of the home as the Domestic Church is being aggressively besieged. In many places around the globe,
Christians are targets of persecution and even martyrdom. Religious liberty is becoming more and more threatened
not only here in the United States, but internationally as well.
With these dark shadows in mind, I ask that the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel be prayed regularly by all the
baptized in the course of their daily lives as they engage in the battle for their eternal salvation. I particularly
desire that this powerful prayer be recited in the Domestic Church, the family, by the entire household when
possible. Such prayer, propagated across the 33 counties of our diocese and spread throughout each day will
certainly help our world, provide greater spiritual protection of our homes and communities, and strengthen us for
living as Christian disciples.
The history of the Prayer to St. Michael is long and rich. Pope Francis blessed a statue of St. Michael in the
Vatican garden and placed the Vatican under the protection of St. Michael. The power of this particular prayer
was also emphasized by Pope St. John Paul II:
Even if today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of the Eucharistic celebration, I invite all to not
forget it, but to recite it in order to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and the spirit of
this world.
The prayer can fortify us for that spiritual battle about which the Letter to the Ephesians speaks [of]:
"Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power."(Ephesians 6:10). And to this same
battle that the Book of the Apocalypse refers [to], recalling in front of our eyes the image of St. Michael
the Archangel (cf. Revelations 12:7). Surely, this scene was very present to Pope Leo XIII, when, at the
end of the previous century, he introduced to the entire Church a special prayer to St. Michael: ‘St.
Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the
devil… ’
I thank you for your prayerful response to this request. May God in His infinite mercy, and through the
intercession of Blessed Michael the Archangel, deliver us from all evil.

Una invitación a rezar la Oración a San Miguel en la Iglesia Doméstica
Como obispo de la Diócesis de Tyler, me siento particularmente movido a animarlos a rezar la oración a San
Miguel Arcángel como parte de sus oraciones diarias individuales y familiares.
Ciertamente nuestro mundo está hoy en gran necesidad de ayuda celestial al enfrentarnos a los graves males como
el terrorismo, la pornografía, los intentos de redefinir el matrimonio y la sexualidad humana, el avance de la
ideología relativista y secular, y quizá más notoriamente, la matanza y el desmembramiento de niños aun no
nacidos. Intencionalmente o no, el mismo fundamento del hogar como iglesia doméstica está siendo agresivamente
acosado. En muchos lugares alrededor del mundo, los cristianos están siendo blanco de persecución y aun de
martirio. La libertad religiosa está siendo cada vez más y más amenazada no solo aquí en los Estados Unidos, sino
también internacionalmente.
Con estas sombras oscuras en mente, pido que la oración a San Miguel Arcángel sea rezada regularmente por todos
los bautizados en el curso de su vida diaria mientras participan en la batalla por su eterna salvación.
Particularmente deseo que cuando sea posible esta poderosa oración sea rezada en la iglesia doméstica—la
familia—por todos los miembros del hogar. Tal oración, propagada alrededor de los 33 condados de nuestra
diócesis y difundida a través de cada día ciertamente ayudará a nuestro mundo, proveerá gran protección espiritual
a nuestros hogares y comunidades, y nos fortalecerá para vivir como discípulos cristianos.
La historia de la oración a San Miguel es una larga y rica. El Papa Francisco bendijo una estatua de San Miguel en
el jardín del Vaticano y colocó al Vaticano bajo la protección de San Miguel. El poder de esta oración en particular
también fue enfatizado por el Papa San Juan Pablo II:
Aunque en la actualidad esa oración ya no se rece al final de la celebración eucarística, los invito a todos a
no olvidar rezarla para obtener ayuda en la batalla contra las fuerzas de las tinieblas y contra el espíritu de
este mundo.
Esta oración nos puede fortalecer para la batalla espiritual de la que habla la carta a los Efesios:
«Finalmente, fortalézcanse en el Señor y en la fuerza de su poder» (Efesios 6:10). A esa misma batalla se
refiere el libro del Apocalipsis, trayendo ante nuestros ojos la imagen de San Miguel Arcángel (cf.
Apocalipsis 12:7). Seguramente el Papa León XIII tenía muy presente esa escena cuando, al final del siglo
pasado, introdujo en toda la Iglesia una oración especial a san Miguel: «San Miguel arcángel, defiéndenos
en la batalla, sé nuestro auxilio contra los perversidades y las asechanzas del maligno...».
Les agradezco por su respuesta en espíritu de oración a esta petición. Que Dios en su infinita misericordia y a
través de la intercesión del Bendito Arcángel Miguel, nos libre de todo mal.
