Medan, Indonesia. Anwar y sus amigos son unos gangsters de medio pelo que trafican entradas de cine

“ascendidos” a líderes de los escuadrones de la muerte y se transforman en los responsables directos
de eliminar a más de un millón de disidentes: a los comunistas, por supuesto, pero también a los chinos
por chinos y a un montón por las dudas. Hoy, Anwar es reverenciado como el creador de la organización paramilitar de extrema derecha que surgió de aquellos escuadrones de la muerte, lo invitan a la

Este increíble film de Joshua Oppenheimer se interna en las ideas y la imaginación de una banda de

Medan, Indonesia. Anwar and his friends are small-time gangsters who deal in film tickets in the black
market. When, in 1965, the Indonesian government is overthrown by a coup d’État, they are “promoted”
to death squad leaders and become directly responsible to get rid of over a million dissidents: the communists, of course, but also the Chinese, merely for being Chinese, and another lot just in case. Today,
Anwar is venerated as the creator of the radically right-wing paramilitary organization that arose from
those death squads; he’s invited to television shows and is almost a movie star.
This incredible film by Joshua Oppenheimer goes into the ideas and imagination of a group of killers
that are in power and show the kind of society that they built, in which far from being forced by history to
confess their crimes, they are hoisted up like trophies which make them models to an entire paramilitary
generation. If the viewers think they are watching grotesque surreal fiction, they are not to blame: The
Act of Killing is truly unbelievable. But it is also true.
