2014 Annual Report
What We Do
Why Education?*
Education plays a fundamental role in human, social, and economic development.
Improving education directly impacts human well-being in a variety of ways, and is an effective tool to:
Reduce
Poverty
More schooling
leads to increased
income
Improve
Health
Helps fight the
spread of diseases
and lowers mother and
child mortality rates
Promote
Equality
Empowers women
and fosters gender
equality
By the Numbers: Education in Central America
50%
of high school
students drop out
before graduating
70%
of schools lack
computer labs
10%
of all students go
on to finish college
60%
of schools don’t
have libraries
50%
of rural schools
lack electricity
and potable water
We address these problems through programs that increase access to education and
resources in Central America. We work in close collaboration with local community
members to design and carry out high-impact educational projects.

“Before, we had students from
three or four different grades
in one classroom. There just
wasn’t enough space for
everybody. Now, thanks to
SOL, we have a new classroom.
There is more space for our
students, and the improved
conditions make it easier for
students to learn.”

Work Groups from the US and Canada hosted by
SOL in Nicaragua
327 volunteers
21,000 total hours
worked by volunteers
15 travel scholarships granted to youth volunteers
Work Group Program Goals
Promote solidarity and cross-cultural understanding
between people of the global north and global south
Facilitate volunteer engagement in hands-on community
based projects
Help volunteers better understand and reduce poverty
and inequality in the world
“Twice I have been blessed to go to
Nicaragua, but no amount of time
will ever be enough. The people in
Nicaragua are in need of so much,
but offer everything they have. I
was there to build a school in order
for them to learn, but they were
the ones teaching me. I have been
inspired to seek a way of living that
will better the lives of everyone.”
