UNA NUEVA MIRADA PARA UNA VIEJA TRADICIÓN
Los Belenes de la Pepa, con figuras creadas por Scaramuix, reinterpretan la tradición
del Belén con una mirada nueva y desenfadada que desdramatiza el «misterio» de la
Natividad, evitando la rigidez y la solemnidad propias de este tipo de representaciones
con un punto de humor que las «humaniza».
Las figuras, modeladas en actitudes cotidianas y naturales, están resueltas con formas
simples, sin barroquismos artificiosos pero con una gran minuciosidad en el detalle y
policromadas con cariño por Pepa, con audaces combinaciones de color de franca y
clara luminosidad.
Los Belenes de la Pepa consiguen transmitir una entrañable y confortable sensación
de «proximidad» y ternura.
A NEW LOOK FOR AN OLD TRADITION
Pepa’s Crèches, with characters created by Scaramuix, rediscover the Crèche’s
tradition with a new and casual look that help subtract drama from the «mystery» of
Nativity, avoiding the rigidity and solemnity inherent in this kind of illustrations with
a touch of humor that «humanize» them.
The characters, modeled in daily and natural postures, are solved with simple shapes,
without artificial baroques, but with a great meticulousness in details and polychromed
with charm by Pepa, with bold combinations of color of frank and clear brightness.
Pepa’s Crèches achieve the transmission of a pleasant and comfortable sensation of
«proximity» and tenderness.
UN POCO DE HISTORIA
Hace algo más de 20 años que M.ª José Brasó (la Pepa) tiene un puesto de venta
en la «Fira de Santa Llúcia», delante de la Catedral de Barcelona.
En principio, y durante varios años, expone y vende la cerámica decorada que ella
misma produce de forma artesanal.
El contacto anual con los belenistas despierta su curiosidad por el tema y propone
al pintor Scaramuix la realización de alguna pieza, lo que inicia una fructífera relación
profesional.
La primera figura de Scaramuix es un «caganer» (no podía ser de otra forma, dada
la popularidad de esta figura en Cataluña). Pero no se trata de un «caganer»
convencional para el Belén, sino que se transmuta en una pieza decorativa. Por su
tamaño, textura y presentación, se convierte en un objeto de regalo.
A partir de entonces, Pepa y Scaramuix presentan cada año algún «caganer» nuevo,
habiéndose convertido en un referente obligado para coleccionistas y curiosos.
Buscando siempre dar a esta figura entrañable una proyección más amplia, no han
cesado de buscar nuevas formas de presentación, innovando tanto en el concepto
como en el soporte y los materiales.
Resultado de esta búsqueda son los «inventos» del «caganer» comestible, realizado
en chocolate, o el «caganer» vela, realizado en cera. Asimismo crean la «familia
caganera», una divertida representación de tres generaciones de «caganers», o un
impresionante Copito de Nieve, entre otros.
A BIT OF HISTORY
A little over 20 years ago, María José Brasó (Pepa) owns a stand in «Fira de
Santa Llúcia», in front of Barcelona’s Cathedral.
In the beginning, and for several years, she exhibits and sells decorated ceramics
that she produces herself in an craft way.
The annual contact with crèches’ makers wakes up her interest for the subject and
she suggests the painter Scaramuix a merge to produce some pieces, which initializes
a fruitful professional relationship.
The first Scaramuix’s character is a «caganer» (it couldn’t be another one, since
this character is very popular in Catalonia). It is not a conventional «caganer» for
the Crèche, but it becomes a decoration item. For its size, texture, and presentation,
it ends up sold as a present.
Since then, Pepa and Scaramuix present some new «caganer» each year, turning
into a must-have piece for collectors and onlookers.
Always looking for a wider broadcasting of this charming character, they haven’t
stopped looking for new presentation forms, innovating both in the concept and in the
support and materials.
As a result of this research, they «invent» the edible «caganer», made out of
chocolate, or the candle «caganer», made out of wax. They also create the «caganer»
family, a fun representation of three generations of «caganers», as well as an impressive
Floquet de Neu (Little Snowflake, the albino gorilla of Barcelona’s zoo), among other
creations.
Entrando en el nuevo siglo, Pepa y Scaramuix deciden dar forma a un proyecto
largamente acariciado, animados por la favorable acogida de sus piezas anteriores: la
creación de un Belén completo, con nacimiento, reyes, pastores, etcétera, siguiendo
el mismo estilo de figuras. Se trata de dar un aire totalmente distinto al Belén
tradicional.
El primer año sacan un nacimiento con la Virgen dando de mamar al niño y un San
José ya mayor mirándolos totalmente embelesado, realizado en marmolina.
La acogida del público es sorprendente, lo que les «obliga» a continuar con el
proyecto, sacando nuevas piezas cada año para ir completando el Belén. A partir del
segundo año, empiezan una versión parecida en el concepto, pero de menor tamaño y
realizada en cerámica.
Así nace «Els Pessebres de la Pepa», una empresa familiar que crea figuras de
pesebre de forma artesanal y que cuida meticulosamente la realización de cada una de
las piezas que produce.
Entering the new century, and encouraged by the favorable welcome of their
previous work, Pepa and Scaramuix decide to give shape to a project they have been
thinking of for a very long time: the creation of a complete Crèche, with the birth, the
kings, the shepherds, and so on, following the same style. They intend to give a complete
new look to the traditional Crèche.
The first year, they launch a birth scene, made out of marble powder, with a Virgin
Mary who is breastfeeding the baby and an old Saint Joseph looking at them,
fascinated.
The audience’s welcome is surprising, so they feel «obliged» to go on with the
project, launching new pieces each year in order to complete the Crèche little by
little.
From the second year, they start the production of a version that is similar in the
concept, but it is made out of ceramic in a smaller size.
And this way it takes place the birth of «Els Pessebres de la Pepa», a family business
that creates Crèche’s figurines and uses a handmade production process to build
them, by taking meticulous care in the realization of each produced piece.
PEPA – M.ª José Brasó Manen – Ceramista titulada
por la Escuela Massana de Barcelona, ha expuesto su
trabajo en múltiples ocasiones.
Dedicada principalmente a la realización de piezas
decoradas de pequeño formato, que distribuye desde
hace tiempo por toda la geografía nacional.
En los últimos años, con la creación de «Els Pessebres
de la Pepa», su actividad se centra en la producción de
figuras de Belén, cuidando con mucho cariño cada fase del proceso.
Es el alma de una empresa que crece por la demanda del público y que tiene su centro
en el puesto de venta de «La Fira de Santa Llúcia» de Barcelona. Este año participa
por primera vez en la Feria de Navidad (FEJU), «obligada» por el interés que han
despertado sus figuras en diferentes puntos del país y del extranjero.
PEPA – María José Brasó Manen – Ceramics craftswoman with a degree by the
Massana School of Barcelona, she has exhibited her work many times.
She is mainly dedicated to the production of decorated pieces of small format, that
she distributes since long ago throughout the national geography.
In the latter years, with the creation of «Els Pessebres de la Pepa», her activity is
focused on the production of Crèche’s characters, taking good care of each phase of
the process.
She is the soul of a business that grows by audience’s demand and that has its
headquarters in a stand of «La Fira de Santa Llúcia», in Barcelona. This present
year, and for the first time, it takes part of the FEJU (Feria de Navidad - Chistmas
Fair), «obliged» by the interest aroused by the pieces in different places of the country
and even abroad.
SCARAMUIX – Joan Romaní Bonfill – Artista
polifacético que durante más de 25 años ha recorrido
los más diversos caminos del panorama creativo.
En los años 70, como dibujante de cómic, publicando
en la mayoría de revistas nacionales y alguna extranjera.
En los 80, como ilustrador, primero en el campo
editorial y luego en publicidad, trabajando para algunas
de las mejores agencias de Barcelona.
En el año 88, crea, junto a M. Isac, su propia agencia y
una productora de animación (Cartoon Films),
desarrollando su actividad principalmente en productos de gran consumo infantil.
A partir del 92, se ha dedicado a desarrollar, de una manera cada vez más decidida, su
faceta más artística y personal en el campo de la pintura, especialmente como retratista;
buena muestra de ello son las exposiciones realizadas a finales de los 90, de notable
resonancia entre público y crítica.
Con el nuevo siglo, Scaramuix comienza a trabajar formas en volumen, modelando
figuras para Los pesebres de la Pepa, creando piezas para Cha-Chá o diseñando
artículos promocionales.
En los últimos tres años, dedica su talento y la mayor parte de su tiempo a la creación
de una colección de cuentos infantiles, de gran éxito en Cataluña, que explican, de
una manera divertida y rigurosamente documentada, la vida en una casa de payés.
SCARAMUIX – Joan Romaní Bonfill – Versatile artist that has been through the
most varied ways of the creative panorama for over 25 years.
In the 70’s, he worked as a cartoonist, publishing his creations in most national
magazines, and even some foreign ones.
In the 80’s, he worked as an illustrator, starting in the editorial field and moving
eventually to the publicity world, working for some of Barcelona’s best companies.
In 1988, he founds, with M. Isac, his own company (Cartoon Films), which produces
cartoons in motion, developing its core activity in products for children.
Since 1992, he is devoted to the developing of his most artistic and personal side in
the painting field, especially as a portrait artist, as could be seen in the exhibitions he
gave in the latter 90’s, of notable impact among audience and reviews.
Along the beginning of the new century, Scaramuix starts working shapes in volume,
modelling pieces for «Els Pessebres de la Pepa», as well as creating characters for
the company Cha-Chá or designing promotional items.
The latter three years, he dedicates his talent and most of his time to create a collection
of story books for children, that turns out to be very successful in Catalonia. The
stories explain, in a fun and rigorously documented way, different situations of the
lifestyle in a typical Catalan old-fashion farm.

Pensando en los niños, que son los verdaderos protagonistas de las fiestas navideñas, Pepa i
Scaramuix han editado un cuento para colorear que explica, de una manera divertida i respetuosa, el
«Misterio de la Navidad» (disponible solamente en catalan, de momento).
Thinking of children, who are the actual protagonists of Christmas, Pepa and Scaramuix have
edited a storybook to be colored which explains, in a fun and respectful way, the «Mistery of
Christmas» (available only in Catalan, so far).
Con el mismo espíritu, presentan las creaciones de Scaramuix i Max (reciente Premio Nacional
de Cómic), para Cha-chá, unas figuras de belén realizadas en látex para los mas pequeños de la
casa.
With the same spirit, they also present the creations of Scaramuix and Max (who recently won
the National Prize of Comic) for Cha-chá, a set of crèche pieces made out of latex for the youngsters
of the house.
