City of St. Cloud, VFW Post 3227 working together for bright future

St. Cloud, Fla. (Sept. 23, 2016) – St. Cloud Council Member Dave Askew and City Manager Joe
Helfenberger met with Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3227 Commander John Lasky Sept. 23 at City
Hall. The municipality and VFW have been in talks for a couple of months to determine the best plan of action
for a new building for the VFW membership. In July, Helfenberger and staff presented a workshop focused on
a proposed concept for enhancing Centennial Park in downtown St. Cloud. The vision includes converting the
VFW building into a museum with the blessing of the VFW membership.
“We have said from the beginning that this portion of the concept would move forward only if the VFW
membership agreed to move to another location that we would provide for them,” said Helfenberger.
“Erroneously, a local news station reported this week that the City wanted to ‘bulldoze most of the block and
start from scratch’ and that is just not the case. We explained the concept and the reasoning behind it all and
have been working with the VFW membership since July. In the end, this is a concept in its early stages and
we will continue working with the VFW membership as they are an extremely important part of our Soldier
City!”
St. Cloud’s Front Porch concept was presented to the community during a public workshop July 20. The
purpose of the workshop was to allow for citizens to learn about two new initiatives and to provide input for
future planning.
“This building is a huge historical asset that we want to highlight,” Askew said. “The building needs to
stay.”
Lasky agreed. “I love the way it is, but we have to plan for the future. We are getting support for this.”

Municipio de St. Cloud, VFW Post 3227 trabajan juntos para futuro positivo

St. Cloud, Fla. (23 de septiembre del 2016) – El Miembro de Concilio de St. Cloud Dave Askew y el
Administrador Municipal Joe Helfenberger se reunieron con el Comandante del Veterans of Foreign Wars
(VFW) Puesto 3227 John Lasky del 23 de septiembre en la alcaldía. El municipio y el VFW han estado
hablando por dos meses para determinar el mejor plan de acción para un nuevo edificio para la membresía del
VFW. En julio, Helfenberger y su personal presentaron un taller centrado en un concepto propuesto para la
mejora del Centennial Park en el centro de St. Cloud. La visión incluye convertir el edificio del VFW en un
museo con la aprobación de los miembros del VFW.
"Hemos dicho desde el principio que esta parte del concepto podría avanzar solamente si los miembros
del VFW están en acuerdo de trasladarse a otro lugar que vamos a proveer para ellos”, dijo Helfenberger.
"Erróneamente, una estación de noticias local reportó esta semana que el municipio quería 'arrasar la mayor
parte del bloque y comenzar de la nada’ y esto simplemente no es el caso. Explicamos el concepto y el
razonamiento detrás de todo ésto y hemos estado trabajando con los miembros del VFW desde julio. ¡En fin,
éste es un concepto en sus primeras etapas y vamos a seguir trabajando con los miembros del VFW, ya que
son una parte muy importante de nuestra Ciudad Soldado”!
El concepto de St. Cloud Front Porch se le presentó a la comunidad durante un taller público el 20 de
julio. El objetivo del taller era el de permitirle a los ciudadanos a aprender sobre dos nuevas iniciativas y para
proporcionar comentarios para la planificación futura.
“Éste es un edificio de gran valor histórico que queremos destacar”, dijo Askew. “El edificio necesita
permancer aquí”.
Lasky estuvo de acuerdo. “Me encanta como existe ahora, pero hay que planificar para el futuro. Estamos
recibiendo apoyo para esto”.
