Honeycomb dome in the Hall of the Abencerrajes / Techo de mocárabes de la
sala de los Abencerrajes
The top view of the dome corresponds to an eight pointed star obtained overlaying two squares
rotated 45 degrees.
La planta de la cúpula corresponde con una estrella de ocho puntas obtenida mediante la
superposición de dos cuadrados girados 45º.

Exercise 1: Draw the geometric figure that represents the ceiling of the Hall of the Abencerrajes

Mosaic / Mosaico
We can appreciate in this mosaic an octagonal basic design where other geometric figures like the
eight pointed star are inserted.
En este mosaico apreciamos un diseño base octogonal en el cual se insertan otras figuras
geométricas como son las estrellas de ocho puntas.
Exercise 2: Draw a regular octagon inscribed in the circumference of a radius 3 cm. Calculate the
amount of the angle  in the eight-pointed star polygon.
Ejercicio 2: Dibuja un octógono regular inscrito en una circunferencia de radio 3 cm. Calcula el

Exercise 3: Draw a six-pointed star regular polygon (star of David) from an equilateral triangle
with a side with a length of 4 cm.

The decoration of many plasterwork covers shows different geometric shapes.
La decoración de muchas yeserías presenta diferentes figuras geométricas.
Exercise 4: Enumerate the regular polygons that you see in the picture. Draw a twelve-pointed star
regular polygon from a square with 4 cm sides.

Summary
The four exercises are focused on improving pupils skills in geometry, specially associated with:
1.- Identification of geometric shapes in real life.
2.- Construction of composite figures.
The photos are taken from different halls in the Palace of the Lions and the Comares Palace in the
Alhambra.
Each exercise has a graphic explanation about the way to be solved.
