Why are there changes to the signs near my child’s school?
In response to a safety audit at Meyerland Middle School, the City of Houston, HISD and HPD have partnered to develop
an updated safety plan for this school. The location has been investigated and reviewed during school hours to see what
is occurring during this timeframe. Meetings with Principal Sanders, his staff, the Meyerland Community Improvement
Association, HISD Police, City of Houston Traffic Operations Division, Houston Police Department, and Council Member
Ellen Cohen were held to gather information concerning the specific needs for Meyerland Middle School.
When will the parking restrictions go into effect?
Signage will be posted in early February. There will be a two-week educational period to allow parents and students to
adjust to the changes. After the two-week period is completed, ticketing of violators will begin. Once the educational
grace period has passed, this will be a “zero tolerance zone,” meaning that anyone in violation will be ticketed first and
then asked to move.
Some examples of signs that will be posted near your child’s school:

vehicle, meaning no pickups/drop-offs in this zone. Addresses visibility obstructions that sometimes
occur as a result of vehicles that are parked too close to the corner. Cars parked in this area make it
difficult for drivers to see other cars and pedestrians. Additionally, buses and some vehicles cannot
make turns properly with vehicles parked at the corners of intersections. If a vehicle is parked in this
zone it will be subject to towing.

Suggestions for Those Who Transport Students:
1. Decide on a meeting place away from the congestion and have your child walk to you.
2. Pay attention at the intersections to avoid pedestrian and vehicular conflicts.
***The City of Houston and HISD know that we cannot limit the crossing activity, but the goal is to have a safer
environment in which everyone is aware of their surroundings during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal.
***Please remember to obey all standard driving rules; do not block driveways, do not double-park, and no u-turn.
