ASTRO / BIOGRAPHY
Astro (Octavio Cavieres, Nicolás Arancibia,
Daniel Varas and Andrés Nusser) is a renowned
Chilean band that stands out not only for its
fresh sound and artistic sensibilities, but also
for its bold, energetic and highly interpretative
live show.
In a very short time, Astro has achieved wide
recognition on the Chilean independent circuit
and, more recently, in the international arena.
In early 2011, “Le Disc de Astrou” was released
in Chile and the band performed several live
shows in support of this release. In April they
were invited to participate in the first version
of Lollapalooza Chile, where their comfort and
maturity on stage as well as their tasteful use of eclectic instruments and tones were evident.
Building on this, Astro was then invited to participate in the consolidated Colombian festival "Rock
al Parque", the largest free festival in Latin America, where they performed for an eager and
excited crowd of over 120,000 people.
While their number of international live appearances continued to grow in 2011, the second half of
that year was marked by their invitations to share the Chilean stage with US-based international
greats Metronomy and The Sea and Cake, performing for packed crowds of 2,000 and 1,000
people respectively. They were also one of the most anticipated bands at the Primavera Fauna
Festival, where they performed alongside leading international artists such as: !!! (Chk Chk Chk),
The Raveonettes, Flight Facilities and Jacques Renault, to name a few.
Astro´s first LP (“Astro”) was officially released on December 2nd, 2011 in Chile, a date that set the
stage for a spectacular event at Matucana 100. The event was a complete success – the main
theater was filled to capacity and the band once again exceeded all expectations by surprising the
public with an impressive high budget, well-rehearsed, and mature performance that stands out in
the Chilean independent music scene to this day. Furthermore, thousands of people all over Chile
and around the world were able to experience the show in real time via the Internet as several
Chilean, Mexican, US and Spanish networks participated in its international broadcast.
The album confirmed the band’s growing buzz while solidifying the unstoppable ascension of
Astro’s infectious sound and musicianship. On the international scene, Astro´s new album has
caused ripples throughout diverse markets. It is therefore no surprise that several media sites
have not only hailed “Ciervos” as one of the best tracks and music videos of 2011, but have also
placed “Astro” LP in the elite category of top albums released in 2011.
In 2012, Astro continued to perform internationally, with a view to exposing their music to a
greater consensus of crossover crowds and, in so doing, confirming their stronghold in crossover
markets. In March 2012, they toured the United States and Mexico, performing at the Festival
Normal (Monterrey, Mexico), SXSW (Austin, TX) and Vive Latino (D.F., Mexico), to name a few.
The tour was a complete success, culminating in the signature of a deal with U.S-based label
Nacional Records for the US release of "Astro" and with Terrícolas Imbéciles for its release in
Mexico. Therefore, owing to its desire to aim high and take advantage of the outstanding
opportunities they were offered thus far in their young career, the members of Astro managed to
consolidate their band’s presence in the Aztec market and open the doors to the U.S. market.
Resolute in their eagerness to build on their international achievements, Astro returned to
Argentina, and travelled to Spain to participate in the prestigious Catalan festival known as
Primavera Sound. This visit to Spain was an overwhelming success, as they were able to secure

local representation and booking, including an agreement for the release of their acclaimed
“Astro” LP in Spain.
It must also be noted that the track “Panda”, another catchy song on their debut LP, was selected
to appear on the official video game soundtrack for FIFA 13 (EA Sports).
In early 2013 the band releases the third single from their praised self-titled LP, "Panda". The single
was released with its video, which did not go unnoticed because in less than an hour it was
censored by YouTube. The clip however spread quickly across the Web and band Vimeo channel.
In the video, the protagonists show explicit scenes several women and men of various ages, which
initially are shown simply standing, then slowly begging to catch the rhythm of the song to end up
dancing to its beat, but are lacking clothing. The clip was directed by Sebastián and Cristóbal
Zegers twins, and was produced by the leading Chilean film company Fábula (Prófugos - HBO).
After the premiere of "Panda" the band began again touring internationally. This time visiting
Mexico, Panama, Dominican Republic and United States, to perform in several events as: Carnival
Bahidorá (Mexico), Festival Verde de Cultura Musical (Panama) and Redbull Panamerika LA Stage
(USA). Meanwhile, Astro sign with The Windish Agency, one of the most important U.S. booking
agencies, becoming part of their roster which meant a giant step in the band internationalization.
In March they went to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to perform in a MSTRPLN party. In July the group
went in its most ambitious international tour so far. For a month they travelled though the West
and East Coast of the United States, performing 14 shows in nine different cities. Within the tour
they participated in the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) where they were
distinguished as the "Discovery Artist". Award received in 2012 by the Mexican Carla Morrison. In
each presentation Astro had a great reception from the local audience, which was surprised and
delighted with the band proposal. They closed the tour performing in Lollapalooza, Chicago.
After the United States, the band went to Europe to perform at Mysteryland Holland, and also in
Madrid and Barcelona. Then they go back to Argentina to celebrate the release of "Astro" (their
self-titled album) in that territory.
Back in Chile, the band focuses on the development of their next LP. However, in September they
surprised everyone releasing a new single, “Hawaii”, a lively new tune that shows what the band is
up to today. The song was inspired in everything that the archipelago embodies - including its
tropical vibe, the surfing and the scenic ocean views - but with a surreal twist.
The idea for the song was conceived three years ago in Osorno, Chile, but it turned into reality
earlier this year when the band was touring the U.S. While gigging NYC, Red Bull offered the
group the opportunity to record one single at its recording
studios, based in Los Angeles, California. The band worked
on the original first chords, added the voice and the synths,
and soon achieved a solid demo to record at Red Bull
Studios in Los Angeles. A week later, Astro celebrated
drummer Octavio Cavieres' birthday by recording "Hawaii"
in Los Angeles at the Red Bull Studios. According to the
band, it was a work-and-play day in an absolutely stunning
recording studio. The song was produced and mixed by the
members of Astro at their own studios in Santiago. It was
mastered by the legendary Brooklyn-based Sound Engineer
Joe Lambert (Toro y Moi, Animal Collective, Chromeo,
among others).
As for their live performances, Astro closed 2013 with shows
in major Chileans venues such as: Frontera Festival, Feria
Pulsar and Mysteryland Chile.

for their latest single “Manglares” featuring images captured by the group while touring
internationally. The visuals are layered over an extended version of the song, which includes a
section the band originally developed for their live show about a year ago, and that has since
evolved into a key moment for live audiences both in Chile and abroad.
In late May, Astro presents for the second time in its career in the Primavera Sound festival in
Barcelona, Spain. This time performing two shows, in one of the biggest stages of the event and
also in a more intimate unplugged format stage.
As for his international career Astro also visited twice Argentina to participate in the Festival
Ciudad Emergente and Music Wins Festival in Buenos Aires.
In Chile, they closed the year with concerts in Festival Primavera Fauna in Santiago and Jardín
Estéreo in Viña del Mar.
Alongside the live performances, during 2014, the band worked hard on what will be their third
studio album which will be released the end of 2015. It is in this regard that in September they
recorded part of their upcoming album in the Red Bull Studios in Sao Paulo.
Astro begins in 2015 with the premiere of "Caribbean" the first single of their awaited album:
"Chicos de la Luz". A song with new sounds, machines and colors; adds a new imagery full of
sparkles, echoes and spatial voices, transforming this new sound into minimalist but exciting
proposal.
With the song "Caribbean", voices and synthesizers were recorded in Astro’s studio in Santiago,
while the drums were recorded in Red Bull Studios in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The mix of "Chicos de la
Luz" was finished in Triana Studios, under Nacho Soto supervision, and then mastered in New York
by Dave Kutch, known for his work with Little Dragon, Alicia Keys and Justin Timberlake. The song
is nominated to de Latin Grammys as “Best Alternative Song”.
Astro released this new single on the verge of his first visit to Peru, to appear in a version of Red
Bull Panamérika with Bomba Estereo and Neon Dominik; and to Colombia to participate in the
Festival Estereo Picnic and then return to Chile to appear for the second time in the local version
of Lollapalooza.
The second single was “Druida” release with a lyric video and days before the release of the album
in June 2015.
Astro has it all. With a defining sound, solid musicianship, and outstanding artistic sensibilities
revered throughout the world, their proven crossover potential will undoubtedly continue to
define itself as they focus their future efforts on conquering the worldwide music scene.

LE DISC DE ASTROU
Music for healing and meditation, is defined by its own creators
as the “spirit” of this their first EP. A creation that has achieved
great recognition in specialized media, and noted for a sound
that mixes roots of a psychedelic pop, progressive rock and
electronic beats. Great singles like: "Master distortion", "Raifilter"
and "Ea Dem", have led this young Chilean band to successfully
present and perform in some of the best music scenes at national
level and participate in important, popular festivals in front of
thousands of people.
"The CD Edition of "Le Disc of Astrou" contains the same seven
songs that were released in a digital format, more than one year
ago, but this has added value to the expectations by its output and to be more faithful to the
original record." (Quoted from an interview with Sebastián Amado). Hits such as 'Raifilter' and 'Ea
Dem', appearing on the soundtrack of "What Pena Tu Vida", are summer anthems without losing
any of their initial hedonistic self-confidence. Any pop artist would be envious of their singles as
have matured in good shape with the passing of the months, as well as Astro as a whole, whose
first music journey was shown during 2011.

ASTRO
This album is the result of two years of work and becomes the
first LP of the band. According to their own authors, this album is
a much better representative of what is Astro. Especially through
their live show, their personality can be clearly reflected in its
percussion and synthesizers. Since the release of debut of the
band, their sound, energy has evolved and grown over time.
The band has many influence such as Deerhunter, Ariel Pink,
Yeasayer, and High Places but Astro has still have their own
individual sound. Which aids in defining what the band was
experiencing through melodic songs that are structure free.
Recorded in studies Tirana, it was initially mixed and produced
by the singer of the band, Andrés Nusser. The latest arrangements in mixing and mastering were
in enforced by the national producer, Gonzalo González. This last stage was a lengthy process
because deeply sought sound that would identify the band.
The video for "Deer" was filmed on an island in a lake in the South of Chile, which has the
peculiarity of being full of deer. What they wanted was to reflect the concept of a herd, in a State
of total connection with nature, animals and Gods. Therefore, showing an island where you can
deal equally with deities and speak with animals as if they were one friends. It should be noted, the
director was Oscar Wakeman, son of the legendary keyboardist for 'Yes' Rick Wakeman.

CHICOS DE LA LUZ
Four years later, the Chilean quartet finally released its
second LP, “Chicos de la Luz” (translated as “Children of the
Light”). Astro´s latest album is the result of several years of
work, a long process that took a lot of time with the intention
that all had special significance and sound.
Every moment of this creation, "Chicos de la Luz" symbolizes
all the travels and experiences of the band since the release
of their previous album. In the words of Andrés Nusser,
“What we like about the album is the dimension that takes us.
We believe it has a very strong imagination, that if it catches
you it will take you far while listening to it”. Daniel Varas
(Zeta) adds "it is like a car ride down the road with your best
friends, but in a car that flies."
The voices and synthesizers were recorded in the studios of Astro in Santiago, while the drums
were registered in the Red Bull studios in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In Brazil, the recording was done under
the supervision of the renowned Peruvian, Latin Grammy winner, recording engineer, Justin
Moshkevich. The mix of "Chicos de la Luz" was performed in Triana Studios by Nacho Soto Kallens
and Nicolas Arancibia (Lego) and was mastered in New York by Dave Kutch, who is known for his
work with Little Dragon, Alicia Keys and Justin Timberlake.
The release of the new album is given in the framework of a tour through United States and Spain,
which has led them to play in New York, Chicago, Madrid, Barcelona and Cartagena, Columbia.
Their most recent, popular performances of their new album were in Argentina, and Monterrey but
they have no sign of stopping there. Their first single off this new album is “Caribbean”, nominated
to the Latin Grammys 2015 as “Best Alternative Song”. It was follow by “Druida” as second single.

Astro lidera delegación local en
el mayor festival de España

“Siento que hoy estamos justo en un punto crucial”. De
ese modo categórico, Andrés
Nusser, el cantante y guitarrista del grupo Astro, define el presente del alabado
pop chileno que irrumpió
hace cinco años y que, según sus palabras, hoy atraviesa el siempre complejo
desafío de la renovación.
“Lo que se viene hablando
hasta ahora es de álbumes
de hace dos a tres años, por
lo que, si queremos mantenernos, tenemos que ser innovadores. Si todos esos grupos hacen cosas interesantes,
esto va a seguir, pero si hacen
lo mismo, lo pongo en duda”,
completa el músico, en torno a una generación que a fin
de mes tendrá una nueva opción de desplegar su potencial en una de sus latitudes
predilectas: el festival Primavera Sound de Barcelona
-que se hará del 28 al 31 de
este mes y que tiene a nombres como The National y Ar-

cade Fire- reunirá a una amplia delegación nacional bajo

hecho, la entidad también
participará en PrimaveraPro,
una feria del mercado internacional de la música y que
se organiza durante los mismos días de la cita madre.
Aparte de Astro -que se
presentará por segunda vez
en el espectáculo y en uno de
los escenarios de convocatoria media-, el festival tendrá a Föllakzoid, Congelador, Dënver y Matías Cena.

“Es una instancia muy interesante, porque permite una
proyección mayor y se cumple con el fin de llevar la escena chilena a distintas partes”, cierra Nusser, agregando que, al menos de su parte,
ya están alistando el cambio

destinará todo este año a preparar su esperado nuevo álbum, el que tiene estreno

New age y seres espaciales: Así es el
nuevo viaje exploratorio de Astro

Para Astro, abrir su nuevo
show en vivo con una canción
de Enya no es una simple humorada. “En las giras escuché
mucho su música”, cuenta el
vocalista Andrés Nusser,
quien reconoce que la estrella irlandesa de la corriente
new age fue una de las principales referencias a la hora de
dar vida a Chicos de la luz, el
segundo álbum de estudio del
cuarteto, cuyo primer single,
Caribbean, hace alusión a
uno de los éxitos de la cantante. A cuatro años de su debut
homónimo, la banda que
completan Nicolás Arancibia, Daniel Varas y Octavio
Cavieres amplió su imaginario, y a las referencias a ani-
males y civilizaciones exóticas se sumaron seres astrales,
la filosofía de Osho, libros tibetanos y dimensiones alternativas. Haciéndole honor a
su nombre, Astro dejó esta
vez los límites terrenales.
“Estas ideas nacen de una
realidad, de experiencias personales, por locas que suenen
(...) La meditación fue un salvavidas para resolver algunas
cosas que me estaban pasando”, dice el cantante sobre
los diez temas del álbum, grabado entre Santiago y Sao
Paulo, y cuyo título se inspira en la creencia de niños que
vienen de las estrellas.

Astro pondrá el freno al ritmo de giras

[MUSICA] El grupo se sumergió durante
10 días en una vieja planta eléctrica de
Brasil para dar con el esqueleto de su
esperado próximo disco.

NIMALES corriendo, pandas,
paseos
entre
manglares. Las
canciones de Astro rodean el espacio imaginario
de una selva psicodélica, donde los
brotes conviven con los cuadros
futurísticos de sintetizadores y máquinas. Sao Paulo, entonces, parece el escenario preciso para germinar sus creaciones. Y así, por casi 10
días, la banda chilena se instaló en
la ciudad brasileña, para registrar
el esqueleto de percusiones que
sostiene las canciones que integrarán su nuevo álbum, aún sin título, que asoma como depósito para
las expectativas abiertas en su celebrado disco Astro de 2011.
La base de operaciones es una vieja planta de electricidad reconvertida a estudio y centro cultural por
la marca Redbull -que invitó a La
Tercera a visitar las grabaciones en
Sao Paulo-, un edificio de cuatro
plantas encallado a un costado de
la Avenida 23 de Mayo, donde autopistas de tres niveles convergen
y sirven de techo para personas que
mantienen viva una fogata.
Nusser regresa, con un café en un
vaso plástico, y actualiza sobre el
camino recorrido: los cuatro miembros de la banda, más su equipo
técnico, llegaron a Brasil el lunes 1
de septiembre. En su primer día al
interior del estudio, instalaron su
batería, los micrófonos y cargaron
toda la música que la banda espera registrar para su nuevo trabajo.
Sobre ese material, irán las percusiones que ahora pulen.
“Vamos haciendo las cosas por capas. Hace un año, en los viajes, yo
iba con el notebook, unos plugins,
un tecladito chico y cuando pillábamos un tiempo, fumábamos un
cañito y ya. Y cuando llegábamos a
Chile, bajábamos ese material a
algo más serio; lo secuenciamos, lo
trabajamos en sintes análogos, todo
fuera del computador”, relata
Nusser, voz y compositor del grupo formado en 2008 y que desde
ahí, asoma como una de las propuestas de mayor alcance entre el
llamado “Nuevo Pop Chileno”.
Nusser toma palco en la consola,
con la última palabra en cada paso
de la jornada. Junto a él están Ignacio Soto (responsable de la grabación en el álbum anterior) y el productor Justin Moshkevich, peruano instalado en EE.UU., a quien la
banda conoció durante una gira
por ese país y a quien reclutaron
para esta etapa.
“Tiene un Grammy con Los Tigres del Norte. Hace pocos discos en
relación a lo que hacemos. Tiene
oficio y se ha notado”, dice Nusser,
“y claro, solo es posible si tenemos
un mecenas. Eso es lo que hace Red
Bull. Ya no existe ese soporte de las
disqueras y de esta forma, nos sentimos como peces en el agua: no nos
están comprando el alma. De todas
formas, yo me he gastado toda mi
plata en hardware”, explica.
Llueve, se despeja. Adentro en el
estudio apenas se enteran. Nusser
pide, una y otra vez, repetir una lí-

SIN CHISTAR
ESDE EL debut Muérdete la lengua (2007),
Francisca Valenzuela
hizo de las canciones
con destinatario una rúbrica,
más o menos al mismo tiempo
que Taylor Swift acuñaba el recurso, la letra de orgullosa condición de género, y atenta a las
pequeñeces masculinas, ancla-
na Vicente Sanfuentes (Hermanos brothers), acreditado junto
a la artista como director musical. Figura David Sitek de TV on
the radio por ejemplo, un capo
de las ambientaciones gélidas,
que le da un toque trip hop a
Catedral, como articula una balada synth pop en el tema que
bautiza al disco.

control. Octavio Cavieres le explica qué es Minecraft a Moshkevich.
Daniel Varas (“Zeta Moustache”)
revisa las redes sociales de Astro y
explica que esta vez, la banda busca un contraste alto entre los golpes naturales y las armonías ancladas en texturas digitales: “Las
canciones son más claras, está más
definido donde entramos y cómo
nos sumamos”. Nicolás Arancibia
(“Lego Moustache”) estira los pies,
recién salido de la sala aislada:
“¿Está bien así? ¿Una milésima
menos?”.
Costa Rica, David, Caribean, son
algunos de los nombres con que la
banda se refiere a los nuevos temas,
que suenan, por ahora, enérgicos y
está tras Perfume de tu piel e
Insulto (descifrable como ajuste
de cuentas con sus detractores),
y ese dramatismo pop a la mexicana se nota, en tanto Armadura conecta con la nostalgia
de talante heroico de Laura
Pausini.
Hay un progreso evidente, un
nivel de producción internacio-
luminosos, más compactos que en
su álbum previo. “Este disco está
regido por la idea de que menos es
más. Las canciones se inventaron
en los sintetizadores y cada capa
debe tener carácter, un discurso. Es
algo que aprendí escuchando Gorillaz. El disco anterior está superpoblado de capas. Este trata de manera proactiva de no cometer esos
errores”, dice el cantante.
El viaje, además, fue registrado
por el cineasta Matías Pinochet (Los
Rockers. Rebelde rock and roll),
quien lo transformará en el primer
video del próximo álbum. En noviembre, Soto y Nusser rematarán
ese avance con un encierro en Frutillar, donde se grabarán las voces.
Marzo es la fecha estimada para
que aparezca el disco. Por ahora, la
consigna es el claustro.
De vuelta a Sao Paulo, ya se cumplen cuatro horas seguidas buscando el sonido adecuado para la
batería. Al centro de la sala de control hay una mesa poblada con envoltorios de chocolates, un balde
con hielos derretidos, latas de
energética vacías. Moskovich está
extendido sobre un sillón de cuero. Entra un administrativo del lugar a recordar que las horas laborales ya se agotaron. “Diez minutos más”, pide Nusser. Se friega
los ojos, se acomoda el gorro
snapback. Media hora después, ya
afuera, la banda cruza pocas palabras, corren cigarros, arrecia el
viento en la noche paulista. Los
Astro esperan taxi y el nuevo viaje recién comienza.b
envidiable de manufactura, que
no coincide con la calidad interpretativa. Aunque dominan los
sintetizadores, con la excepción
de Cuequita del corazón donde,
precisamente, se suelta un poco
más, no justifica la sensación
glacial sin matices, ni la falta de
chispa.
