INTRODUCTION
This dociünent' is an initial attempt to make readily available for
social scientists and developn^nt analysts a variety of social indicators
Tidiich are usually widely dispersed in numerous sources, often far out-dated,
or in some"cases not previously existent.' It is especially directed to
researchers in "non-social" areas >4io require "finger-tip" information
•vdiich, although necessary to make or buttress a point in their work,'does
not form part of the cbritral theme of analysis.
Thus,although sociologists
and political scientists m i l also be benefited by this material, those
likely to be most serviced are analysts ih the areas of macroeconomic
development,'indüstr^^j agriculture, natural resources and the environment,
the public sectol*,economic integration, foreign trade and transport.
The advantages;Of this type of doclmient are that it allows the researcher
to expand the scope of his work and saves considerable time by reducing his
necessity to break awajr from'the main thread of data collection ahd analysis
to track dovm information outside of his field of speciality. •
Emphasis should be drawn to viiat the document offers and its limitations.
The selected indicators pertain exclusively, to levels of living and social
sectors (e.g. nutrition, health, housing, education, social security) rather
than to the broader area of social structure and social change vinderstood in
terms of social stratification, the structure of power and the values and
actions of different social groups, agents ancj/or institutions.
The
interactions which exist between the latter and the social sectors are
complex and at times apparently contradictory within speisific national and
local situations.
This problem together with the shortcomings common to
social sector data requires the, user to exercise caution in emiting any
generalizations based on the indicators contained in this document with
reference to "social" development or styles of developneht.
Data with
viiich to appraise the latter do exist and are constantly being refined.

But their implications are not self-evident to the non-specialist and
are consequently best used together \d.th the analysis of the texts in
vghich they appear.1/
For the most part demographic indicators have not been included.
Many are to be found in the first two studies mentioned in reference 1
as well as the publications of CEIADE particularly in the Boletin
demográfico and Notas da población. Indicators referring to employment,
unemployment and underemployment are also,excluded since the utility pf
traditional indicators such as rates of open unemployment are coming
under increasing criticism and the data base with which to answsr the
most interesting questions is generally weak.

Finally, with several exiMptions, the distributional aspects of
social sectors have not been dealt with because of the general inadequacy of
conventional indicators and the weak statistical basis of most
income distribution data vdiich do little more than present . ^ a m L estimates
of the situaticái of abstract segments of the population rather than
identify the relative condition of real, coherent groups of people for
vSiom policy measures may effectively be designed.2/
